1 NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR THE TRAINING OF JOURNALISTS AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN JOURNALISM 2012 WINNERS
2 STUDENTS NEWS JOURNALISM Joe Cooper Leeds Trinity University College Joe was praised for his entries which incorporated social media, FOI and traditional reporting techniques and for his ability to sniff out something original. Since completing his course Joe has been working as a trainee journalist at the Dewsbury Reporter. SPORTS JOURNALISM David Lyons Glasgow Caledonian University David submitted a story about a European netball tournament during which he seized the opportunity to interview the former President of Switzerland. He said: It s a privilege to win. To receive praise from people you hold in such high regard is an honour. David is now a news and sports reporter at the Highland News in Aberdeen. TOP SCOOP / EXCLUSIVE Adam Knight News Associates - London Adam was praised for his entry by judge Graham Dudman, editorial development director at News International, who said Adam turned what could have been a routine preview piece on sports betting into a cracking revelatory story. Since graduating Adam has done some freelance work for Eurosport. FEATURES Jennifer Morris News Associates - London Judge, Jayne Savva, features editor for Best magazine, commended Jennifer for her touching, unsentimental first person account of coping with the death of a parent. Jennifer is now working as a trainee reporter at the Surrey Herald and said of her win: It s really lovely to be recognised in this way, I m absolutely thrilled. IMAGES Joel Goodman Sheffield College Since graduating this spring Joel has been working at the Manchester Evening News and also had his pictures published in various national newspapers. His entry, which included video as well as photographs, was praised by the judges for its effectiveness.
3 TRAINEES NEWS JOURNALISM David Churchill Croydon Advertiser David has worked as a reporter at the Croydon Advertiser for a year. Judge Will Gore, deputy managing editor at the Evening Standard, said: His use of contacts to get hard-hitting, public interest stories was excellent and his persistence in asking important questions was outstanding. David completed his preliminary training with News Associates - London and said of the NCTJ course: You couldn t do the job without it.. TOP SCOOP / EXCLUSIVE Dominic Shaw Hartlepool Mail Dominic has worked at the Hartlepool Mail since September He previously completed the NCTJ-accredited BA in multi-media journalism at Teesside University. His entry was an exclusive he managed to secure with back from the dead canoeist John Darwin. He said of the award: It s a confidence boost to have your work recognised at this level, especially when you see comments from the judges about the standard of entry. FEATURES Hardeep Matharu Epsom Guardian Hardeep graduated from News Associates - London earlier this year. She was praised for stories that are a perfect example of why local papers matter and said: I know there are many determined and committed trainee journalists in the industry, and many more trying to get into it, and feel privileged to be recognised for my work in a job I enjoy and which really means something to me. IMAGES Alex Cantrill-Jones Derby Telegraph Judges said Alex s photographs, that showcased events and emotions in the local community, really stood out. He said of his win: It s brilliant for my first full-time job as a photographer. It feels great to be able to uphold the standards of the Derby Telegraph and do them proud as well.
4 BEST STUDENT PUBLICATION De Montfort University Royal Visit The 48-page magazine to mark the launch of the Queen s Diamond Jubilee Tour was produced by second-year students from the NCTJ-accredited single honours journalism course at the Leicester Centre for Journalism. PERFORMANCE AWARDS STUDENT JOURNALIST OF THE YEAR Christopher Hoy University of Sunderland Chris passed all his Diploma in Journalism exams first time at A or B grade and achieved 100 wpm shorthand. He has worked with Sky Tyne and Wear for three months and also had his articles published in the Guardian, Sunderland Echo and Evening Chronicle. REPORTER OF THE YEAR Hannah Upton Westmorland Gazette Hannah joined the Westmorland Gazette as a trainee reporter having completed the NCTJ-accredited MA course at the University of Central Lancashire. She passed the NCE earlier this year with the highest marks in the country.
5 CHAIRMAN S AWARD David Rowell Head of editorial learning and development Johnston Press David s first training role was as editor of Emap Training, where he spent seven years training hundreds of young journalists. This was followed by six years at Northamptonshire Newspapers as editor-in-chief and editorial director. In his current role as head of editorial learning and development for Johnston Press, he has led a team of editorial trainers for the last eight years, ensuring that all journalists joining the company are properly trained and qualified. He has been at the forefront of preparing Johnston Press journalists for the digital revolution that is transforming the industry. He has worked extensively for the NCTJ s newspaper journalism examinations board and more recently, the Journalism Qualifications Board.
