Over the next N days, you receive a deck of Dixitlike cards. A Mystical Dreamer deck consists of 25 images saved in an album on imgur. Try to make 25 cards of your own and send them to me in a zip file. These will be shuffled with the cards provided by other players, uploaded to the web, and sent to you as an album. If you don't reach 25, the remaining cards will be provided for you. If you haven't played actual Dixit, the cards are surreal dreamlike images. A good image is open to multiple interpretations. Use images you find on Reddit or from your camera or screenshots. Spoiler: Examples from Dixit (click to show/hide) However, my Mystical Dreamer deck might look more like this: Spoiler: Made up examples (click to show/hide) When the collection period is over, we play Dixit! 1. Someone decides to be the Dreamer. The Dreamer can be anyone who hasn't been the Dreamer yet this cycle, just the first person to claim the role. 2. The Dreamer selects a card and uploads it to but doesn't show us. They announce a hint for the card; the hint can be anything at all. They submit the URL to the DreamBot 3. Everyone else also selects a card which fits the hint and submits the URL to the DreamBot. They make a post saying they submitted. Your "hand" is your entire deck, but you cannot reuse cards. 4. The Dreamer Bot randomizes the order of the URLs it receives, adds BBCode markup, and sends the results to the GM, who posts it. 5. Everyone tries to guess which image is the one submitted by the Dreamer. They do this by submitting their guess to the GM, who doesn't read the guesses. 6. If the Dreamer's card was picked by SOME players but not ALL players, the Dreamer and all the correct guessers score three (3) points. If ZERO or ALL players pick the Dreamer's card, the Dreamer gets zero (O) points and everyone else gets two (2). Also, each nondreamer player gets a (1) point for everyone who guessed their card was the Dreamer's card. (you can't guess your own card). So you get points for guessing the correct card, for having a card that fools others, and for being the Dreamer and getting a nonzero, non100% amount of players to choose your card. Rules for cards: Use Irfanview or something to keep filesizes low if necessary Cards cannot have any text, including signs and stuff Must be a static image Nothing that could uniquely identify you as the owner No duplicates or near duplicates in your submitted deck Images should be safe for work Rules for speed: If the eligible new Dreamers don't start a round within a reasonable period of time, 1/43

2 everyone becomes eligible again. If you don't submit a card within a reasonable period of time, you're just out for that round. You don't count as a player at all. Will it work? What needs fixed? Are you interested in playing? Start building a deck! Post by: Dr. Agon on August 31, 2015, 10:09:11 PM my suggestion and I think you hinted at this, was that we have some sort of control set of cards. I don't want people to just go and basically invent cards as they go for a certain clue. I want it to be limited to what they already had. I guess what I am saying is that we make the "cards" and then have something randomly distribute who gets what "card" without other players knowing. 3/43

I guess what I am saying is that we make the "cards" and then have something randomly distribute who gets what "card" without other players knowing. What I imagined is that your deck/hand of 50 is set for the whole game and cannot be changed. Are you proposing that you might have some of my cards and vice versa? A draft could be fun but then people would have seen some of the cards. I'm sure it would be possible to automate the task. Post by: Dr. Agon on August 31, 2015, 10:32:21 PM What I don't want and I'm sure will end up happening in your set of rules is that someone will, instead of making 50 or so, just make up a card on the fly in response to a clue by the dreamer. on one hand, this sounds like an okay thing, but on the other, it gives an unfair advantage entirely to those that are better at making cards. Its also important to note that some players/people are going to have a distinct type of card that they will make and it would be nice to not be able to use meta to determine who submitted a card. So more or less, I'd like for there to be a definite pre determined amount of cards and that people are making cards for others and not themselves. does that make sense? edit: what we could do is something like, everyone makes or something and posts the URL to the imgur to the bot and the bot then gives every player the same amount of URLs from the huge list of everyone's cards. I mean that would obviously be cheating. I'll look into the technology side of distributing cards out. I think it may be more in the spirit of Dixit that way. 5 Rad. In. Post by: Iron on September 03, 2015, 08:42:06 PM I'm working on the technologies for this game. For Greg's idea, it's probably easiest just to have people send me their albums as a zip or as an imgur album which I can download. I'll randomize them on my own machine and upload them into albums for each player. Imgur has an API but it's not worth the effort. For the DreamerBot, I am learning SQL anyway. Post by: Iron on September 05, 2015, 01:38:05 AM I have created all the tools we need for this game. We can start as soon as everyone is ready. For deck building, I think we should try Greg's idea. Everyone will send their files to me as a zip or as a link to an imgur album or i can accept dropbox and google drive. Whatever. I'll get all your images on my computer, use a tool that appends a random number to every filename in a folder, divide them up evenly, upload each deck to imgur as an album, and send you a link to an album (which I won't look at). Sounds complicated but it only takes about 30 seconds. 50 might be too large of a deck. Let's try 25 instead. I've been adding to mine since I had this idea and I only just now hit 25. I think we can remove the rule of images being 600x600. Just make sure they're a reasonable filesize. For played cards, I have an online page that accepts username (just in case) and imgur urls as inputs, adds them to a database, and i can pull them into a randomized order complete with BBCode markup. No need for me to see the username. Anyway, start adding to your collections in earnest. Let me know when you're done. Post by: Dr. Agon on September 05, 2015, 05:17:45 AM is there even enough interest in this? I think it sounds fun and simple, so everyone SHOULD/COULD be interested. come on mysticbros and mystichoes. (sorry) Post by: Iron on September 05, 2015, 11:07:47 AM Modi told me in a chat he would play. So we have me, Dragon, Modi, Narwhal. That's enough to work mechanically. Real Dixit works best with six players, it seems to me. Post by: guy on September 07, 2015, 04:26:55 AM would it be that hard/that much work for someone to make a twgbot like thing that randomizes and posts the assortment of cards each round so we don't need a GM? 5/43

6 Quote from: Dr. Agon on August 31, 2015, 10:32:21 PM What I don't want and I'm sure will end up happening in your set of rules is that someone will, instead of making 50 or so, just make up a card on the fly in response to a clue by the dreamer. on one hand, this sounds like an okay thing, but on the other, it gives an unfair advantage entirely to those that are better at making cards. this is the rough equivalent to people talking outside the game in twg. i think mysticboards is mature/fair enough or at the very least values fun over winning, so i don't really see this as an issue or likely possibility. people should be aware if they are to sign up, part of the requirement is making a deck beforehand. if we're going to have a GM, it might be worth requiring everyone to submit their decks as a prerequisite for signing up, or maybe just as a prerequisite to being included in the game when it starts Quote from: Dr. Agon on August 31, 2015, 10:32:21 PM Its also important to note that some players/people are going to have a distinct type of card that they will make and it would be nice to not be able to use meta to determine who submitted a card. So more or less, I'd like for there to be a definite pre determined amount of cards and that people are making cards for others and not themselves. does that make sense? edit: what we could do is something like, everyone makes or something and posts the URL to the imgur to the bot and the bot then gives every player the same amount of URLs from the huge list of everyone's cards. this is a good point and i like the idea of everyone submitting a number of cards. i also like it being a lenient amount, and maybe even asking for an ideal minimum but not making it a strict requirement and then having a hard maximum this would eliminate the possibility of a 25 card requirement deterring people who want to play a simple and fun mysticboards social game but not collect a bunch of pictures for it. i don't think this takes away from the fun, and i think it's better to have too few cards than too many. we can always decrease the number of rounds or make it arbitrary and mostly just for fun or something if it increases the odds that more people will play and enjoy it with us or maybe have a rough ideal number of total cards based on the number of people and just have people submit as many as they want, starting first with everyone getting an equal number and then filling in the rest from what other people don't want to submit. like say you submit 30 cards and specify 25 that you definitely want in and then 5 that can either go in if we need more or be saved for a future round i don't really see any issue with people being aware or even unevenly aware [ie if one person gets mostly cards they submitted and one person gets almost none of the cards they submitted, causing the latter player to have a much greater awareness of the total pool of submitted cards]. i don't think it would really makes it any less fun or fair. i also like the idea of adding the option to vote on cards we think are really really good [zum Beispiel iron you including original dixit cards] to keep around as standards for future games. idk in any case, i'm in. someone should tell kc and maria since they seemed to really enjoy the game when we all played it at kingsstreakers it's also potentially worth suggesting that people peruse the original dixit decks to get a better feel for the kind of weird shit that is included. i think the game runs the risk of being a lot less fun if the cards aren't wildly weird and trippy [this is what really sold the game as 6/43

7 amazing to me. because it was very often hilarious and also difficult to pick one or very easy for people to fool others into picking theirs] or if some are and some are more normal pictures of everyday life things Post by: Iron on September 07, 2015, 11:08:58 AM I already made a myxit bot, as I explained earlier. There is no need for a GM. Each round, you submit the imgur url of your card to the bot, which delivers it anonymously to me. All I have to do is paste it here. Yeah if somebody doesn't have 25 cards that is fine. It will get evened out in the end. Also, I have almost 50 cards now (some deserve to be discarded though), so if someone wants to join in a later round, they can mix their deck with my spares or something. Post by: Iron on September 07, 2015, 06:04:11 PM There are different versions of Dixit, but here's a set you can look at: quest?size=original Post by: Dr. Agon on September 07, 2015, 09:49:52 PM I agree that a suggested minimum is great because some people (like joey said he did already) can go over it and allow others who don't want to put as much "work" in can still play. Post by: Iron on September 09, 2015, 10:25:03 PM How's everyone's decks coming along? Post by: Dr. Agon on September 10, 2015, 07:48:54 AM I'm not very far yet. sorry. Post by: Moði Thorson on September 10, 2015, 08:24:25 AM I've got 25. Post by: AngryNarwhal on September 10, 2015, 12:21:18 PM got somewhere around /43

8 Post by: Iron on September 10, 2015, 08:08:23 PM I'm finding a surprising number of decent cards in friends' FB pictures, like actual photographs. I must have weird friends. Post by: Iron on October 08, 2015, 02:28:23 PM Ok we're starting this game November 1. Try to make a deck by then. If you don't reach 25, that's ok, you can use some of my cards. If you want to change whether you are on the interested list, let us know by then. Post by: AngryNarwhal on October 09, 2015, 11:43:18 AM I literally just logged on to say aaaaaaaay wassup wit dis? Post by: Iron on October 09, 2015, 01:00:43 PM Wassup is mostly that people need to build decks. Everything else has been ready to go for a month. Post by: AngryNarwhal on October 10, 2015, 08:06:33 PM I have a deck. Post by: Iron on October 10, 2015, 10:58:53 PM +1 Post by: Dr. Agon on October 15, 2015, 03:52:35 AM I am well on the way of making my deck Post by: Iron on October 26, 2015, 10:53:24 PM Don't forget about this. I added a few things to the bot, including form validation. You can try to break it if you promise to tell me how you broke it. Players: 8/43

Post by: xazarus on November 03, 2015, 10:29:15 PM I did #3. And it says "Currently in Round 2 waiting for a Dreamer to submit an image link and post a theme.", so I guess I'm going to wait on Modi to resubmit. In the desert, they will just wander around I think the current theory is that seismic activity is the cause. My justification for using it was similar, I think, to Modi's caribou picture an entity literally in search for a Dreamer. Since rocks can't move or like have souls, I imagined it wanting a dreamer to make it more interesting or something. That elephant who was going to go around the world in 80 days is making us all overestimate the ability to interpret traveler's motives. The Dreamerbot is all set up for a new Dreamer. Post by: xazarus on December 06, 2015, 12:34:05 AM This is almost the dumbest thing possible, but I misread the thread and thought the theme was actually "Welcome to Mordor".
