Introduc)on to Nexalogy Wikileaks and Extremism case studies
The New Facts of Life 3.5+ billion Pieces of content (links, news stories, blog posts) posted to facebook weekly 1.14 million Average tweets per hour 70% Bloggers who discuss corporate brands 12.5% Second largest search engine One- quarter Couples married in the US last year who met via social media YouTube Percentage of search results for World s largest brands that point to user- generated content
Rigorous methodology Nexalogy Environics methodology is structured to enable ongoing engagement Provides full service from intelligence to ac)on
A New Approach to New Media Nexalogy Environics is a social media intelligence firm that offers its clients analysis and solu)ons for brand reputa)on, marke)ng and communica)ons on the basis of data drawn from social media that is analyzed with advanced proprietary techniques. Nexalogy Environics : Retrieval and archiving of valuable informa)on based on rigorous methodology that goes beyond simple traffic control. Iden)fy word and network associa)ons of importance (based on a seman)c analysis approach) to show top concepts and conversa)ons. Evaluate the effects and persuasiveness of influencers in the blogosphere in terms of resonance. Interpret and present visually the rela)ons and links between signals and noise in data that are difficult to measure. Use these analy)cs to aid clients in their strategic development ini)a)ves, market research, evalua)on of brands and trademarks, management of risk and blogosphere outreach.
Publisher Map and Analysis Introduc/on. This map, known as a Publisher Map, graphically represents conversa)on communi)es, highligh)ng which blogs are associated to specific keywords and the rela)onships between them. It shows the public interested in the topic research. The links between nodes reflect the nature of the rela)onships between blogs and the search terms: Blogs that are only related to one subject appear in a star padern around the search term. Blogs that are related to mul)ple subjects are linked with, and appear between, the relevant search nodes.

Lexical Map and Analysis Introduc/on. A lexical map is a representa)on of the en)re blog- based discussion (all posts). The lexical map depicts the main topics being discussed in blogs where the search terms are men)oned. The map combines a measure of frequency (number of )mes the term is men)oned), with a measure of co- occurrence the number of )mes different terms are men)oned together in blog pos)ngs. The size of a node indicates the frequency the larger the node the more frequently the term appears. Proximity between nodes indicates co- occurrence the closer together any two nodes are, the more ofen those two terms are co- men)oned in blog pos)ngs. Lexical Map Construc/on. Lexical maps are produced as follows: First, different forms of each word are grouped into a single, canonical version (e.g. transport and transporta)on are grouped). Next, the number of )mes each word is used with each other word in all of the posts in the dataset is calculated. The posi)oning on the map is determined by each word s 5 nearest neighbours. The result is that similar concepts tend to cluster together, describing specific discussions within the broader conversa)on.

No.= 9 I have earnestly opposed violent tension, but there is a type of construc)ve, nonviolent tension which is necessary for growth. Just as Socrates felt that it was necessary to create a tension in the mind so that individuals could rise from the ... At first I was rather disappointed that fellow clergymen would see my nonviolent efforts as those of an extremist. I began thinking about the fact that I stand in the middle of two opposing forces in the Negro community. No.= 9 It disclosed that many mosque leaders had put significant effort into countering extremism by building youth programs, sponsoring an)violence forums and scru)nizing teachers and texts. 26 Lexical Map Observa)ons Middle East Radicaliza)on and recruitment are discussed in terms of both outcomes of conflict in the Middle East that may fuel recruitment and rightwing extremist recruitment in the USA. The killing of OBL is linked to discussions of a two- state solu)on in the Israel- Pales)ne conflict as a possible next step in the War on Terror. Homegrown Homegrown terrorism in the USA and Canada is discussed as a challenge for authori)es in terms of defini)ons and the involvement of untrained, unarmed youth. Homeland security and homegrown terrorism hearings in the USA are discussed including men)ons of Rep. Peter King and Nidal Hassan whose violent acts serve as an example. The possibility of recognizing American excesses in the War on Terror is discussed.
