Formation of the Curricula Committee was one of the criteria for passage of the report. The Curricula Committee concerne itself with the sources of the prescribe curricula an course matetials, the status of the instructional staff, an the status of stuents enrolle in the Navy an Air Force ROTC programs. The committee reviewing the curricula, in a report to be submitte to the faculty, sai it foun no reason for stopping acaemic creit for ROTC programs, but "t woul clearly be more in keeping with normal acaemic practices if. textbooks an stuy programs originate on campus," the report states. The Curricula Committee avise that civilian instructors be use in ROTC programs. The committee mae the recommenations in light of a recommenation by the original review committee, which state ROTC instructors shoul be selecte similarly to acaemic eans. Stuents, once enrolle in an ROTC program, the Curricula Committee report states, are subject to restrictions on his freeom to withraw from ROTC courses. Other stuents, the committee report states, are not subject to the same withrawal restrictions. "Specifically, in his last two years of enrollment, he may be calle to active uty in an enliste status if he is isenrolle from the program either for willful failure to complete the programs or as isciplinary action." That law reas in part, "No stuent shall be subject to summary ismissal from the University for any reason. Any charges against any stuent...shall be hear by the Stuent Stanars.Gommittee...(an) if. charges are preferre in a court of higher authority, all University charges against that stuent arising from the same incient will be roppe." n aition, it is essential that the Stuent Stanars Committee ahere to its. own principles as specifie in its charter uner "Limitations." For these reasons, it is bining upon the Stuent Stanars Committee to refuse to hear the charges against Cooper an Orzen on the grouns that such a hearing woul be in irect violation of Senate law an an ablo.gation of the Stuent Stanars statement af policy.. Of equal importance to- the University an the two stuents is the necessity of isassociaton from the political implications that have become such a weighty factor in the case. Hopefully, the University acte against the stuents in response to a specific incient surroune by specific circumstances, an not as a general inictment of a particular political coloration. Charges against Cooper an Orzen by Bernalillo County District Attorney Alexaner Sceresse are not so much a response to the heckling of Thurmon as they are an excuse to strike out at issent. The University must not put itself in the position of either tacitly or explicitly enorsing an attempt to iscreit an suppress stuent activism at UNM. Lobo Review Patchens ~sleepers Awal{e terme novel of reality By HOLLY BECKLEY Sleepers Awake" (New Directions, $2.25 paperback) by Kenneth Patchen is not a new book, but one that has been re-release, an certainly for goo reason, The book is a masterpiece of poetic prose an/or prosey poetry. "Sleepers Awake" is classifie as a fiction novel, but woul more aptly be terme a novel of reality. As is stanar with Patchen, the reaer must first unerstan the form of Patchens writing before he can unerstan what Patchen is trying to say. "Sleepers Awake" is written in a variety of forms ranging from bolface type to huge printing to picture poems, an each form is interwoven throughout the book (to a to the confusion). One thought may start on page 29 an then continue on page 78 so the reaer fins ifferent ieas intersperse throughout. Although this technique generally confuses the reaer (until he unerstans it), it as to the reality of the writing. An illustration of this technique is easily foun. A thought starts on page 236 an continues for a span of 30 pages. When put together, the thought is: "Gray Deer in the snow crows of trees singing col in the still o love the worl is ol an evil an the heart must ever break villages eath sits in his white eyes fixe upon nothingness where can the goo be hien that none see it bloo rips own. upon the snow 0 Go the chill wins of. borr9.r. lift all these empty masks an everything we ever love is hieously rotting there," Eitor: Commie Kiies To the Eitor: rea with great interest Big A Sceresses Bema in Monays Lobo. The Honorable DA is apparently convince that all the nations high schools an colleges are hot bes of anarchy. He is of course right. But the question he shoul be asking is where all of these anarchists came from in the beginning. have it on goo authority that the majority of them were traine in a local nursery school which is only a few blocks from Mr. Sceresses home. The school it seems has been using material long known to the Joilli-.irch Society (which rumor has it -ta-s..._refuse Sceresse membership because" he. is too liberal) to be wholly subversive. Take for instance all of those Mother Goose (now there is a Capitulation to a White Racist Society When one talks of a "chicano establishment" in most places in this country one is talking of an establishment resting on a white power base; of hanpicke chicanos who project as show pieces out front. The chicano leaers" are then only as powerful as their white kingmakers will permit them to be. There will be those who think that this is the proper way to operate. You must "play ball" with the party in orer to extract minimum benefits. We reject this notion. t may well result in particular benefits in terms of status or material gains for iniviuals but it oes not appeal to the alleviation of a multitue of social problems share by the masses. They may also say if spoke up woul no longer be permitte to take part in the party councils. woul be ouste, an then the chicano people woul have neither vote nor access. Ultimately this is at best a spurious argument which oes more to enhance the security of the iniviual person than it oes to gain substantial benefits for the group. There has evelope in this country an entire class of "captive leaers" in the chicano communities. These are the chicano people with certain technical skills who coul provie useful leaership roles in the chicano communities but o not because they have become be holen to the white power structure. These are chicano school teachers, county agents junior executives in management positions with companies, etc. t is crystal clear that these people have accommoate themselves to the racist system. They have capitulate to colonial subjegation in exchange for the security of a few ollars an ubious status. Theyre effectively lost to the struggle for an approve chicano position which woul funamentally challenge that racist system. When chicano The real beauty of Patchen is foun, however, once the reaer overcomes the hurle of his writing form. When this is accomplishe, the reaer fins reality, Not elusions, reams, nor lanscapes of some far-off place, but the reality of this worl an this life, Patchen sees the worl an relates what he sees, feels, an experiences an relates what he feels, an oes so without changing the elements or eliminating any facts. He sees it all-the goo an the ba-an tells it all through his writing. Patchen is somewhat lil<e William Carlos Williams in this aspect, because like Williams, he creates the worl aroun him through his poems. But Patchen has something more than Williams. He oesnt just re-create what he sees but rather puts it into perspective. The reaer not only fins reality in Patchen, but also fins the poet. Partially through the form of writing an partially through the writing itself, the reaer can see the creative thought of the poet. The reaer is shown what inspires the poet, what the poet believes, what he thinks, what he feels, an why he writes as he oes. Combining all these things, the reaer can see Patchen an hs writing as one, as an emboiment of Kenneth.. Patchen, not just a man an his writings as two separate entitites. This is the element of the book that is most outstaning. The reaer sees Patchen an his min at the same time. The book merits atteiifioh- as an insight into the creative process of an unusual poet. Letters are welcome, an shoul be no longer than 250 wors typewritten, ouble opa.:e. We all know she int have that many chilren by not oing whatever you have to o to have that many chilren. Having been traine by that kin of commie literature what else coul Mr. Sceresse expect? ( also unerstan that at another nursery school in town they even use Aesops Fables.) woul suggest that in the future Mr. Sceresse shoul concentrate on the nursery schools an stap..this anarchistic training at its source. ihese stuents woul probably also be more on a par with his inteiliectbal abilities. L. A. Oer. peop e p ay coloma! polities, they also mistake the white community into thinking that it has the sanction of chicanos. t oes not! These who woul assume the responsibility of representing chicano people in this country must be able to throw off the notion that they can effectively o so an still maintain a maximum amount of security. Jobs will have to be.sacrifice, positions of prestige an status given up, favors forfeite. t may well be, an UMAS thinks it is, that leaership an security are basically incompatible. When one forcefully challenges the racist system, one cannot, at the same time expect that system to rewar him or even treat him comfortably. Political leaership which pacifies an stifles its voice art then rationalizes this on grouns of gaining "somethingl for my people is at bottom, gaining only mtlaningless token rewars that an affluent society is p!!rfectly willing to give.!l i r r l!\. i J J.uesay, March 2~, 970 By SUE MAJOR Over 00,000 foreign stuents come to the Unite States each year to train for jobs to contribute to the progress of their own countries-but 85 percent of stuents from unerevelope countries an 50 percent from Europe area never return home. (CPS)-Central State Colleges 0,620 stuents no longer have to shuffle scheule cars an wait in line to sign up for classes every term. A computer, working year-roun, enrolls them automatically. Central States continuous enrollment system is one of the first in the country. Visual isplay terminals attache to an BM computer let each stuent meet with an avisor, enroll an get a fee statement in one 20-minute session. "The new proceure has free our faculty from enrollment uties an wiene the role of the acaemic avisor," sai B. E. Fisher, ean of amissions an recors. Teaming professional avisors an the computing system has reuce by 75 percent the time enrollment requires an has balance class loas, he sai. A epartment of professional avisers was create to irect the scheuling operation. 0 avisors, meeting stuents each morning uring the semester, spen only 450 man-ays on enrollment. Before, the 350 faculty members worke a total of 750 man-ays uring the five.-ay enrollment week. Weve reclaime that time for class activity," Fisher sai. "Each faculty member now will have five more ays per semester for preparation an instruction." The avisor in the new system registers a stuent for the upcoming term by using a computer terminal similar to a portable TV atop a typewriter keyboar. He ientifies each stuent by typing his social security number on the unit. He then types each propose class section number. These appear on the screen. As each section number is type, the computer instantly etermines whether it is close an if there is a time conflict in the scheule. Barring these, the stuent is enrolle automatically. Classes may be close from week to week as the computer monitors for balance enrollment in each section. For example, a section given a maximum size of 00 stuents may be close temporarily after enrollment reaches 50. Avisors help stuents switch to other sections that have not reache this allotment, By the start of the classes, each section in a subject shoul have approximately the same number of stuents. As soon as the enrollment is confirme, the BM System/360 Moel 40 prints the scheule an fee statement at another terminal. The stuent may pay then or later by mail.
