Lesson 1 Main Point: I Worship God When I Am Thankful Bible Story: Song of Moses and Miriam - Exodus 15:1-21 Purpose: This lesson will teach the children they can worship God when they are thankful. Instrument Find (Drop Off Time Classroom Activity) This activity will give the children the chance to search for pictures of instruments around the room after they are dropped off into their classroom. Thankful Poster (Opening Classroom Activity) This activity will allow the children to color a picture while being introduced to the Main Point: I Worship God When I Am Thankful. Thankfulness Hop (Main Point Classroom Activity) This activity will help the children practice being thankful as they view some pictures. Introduction Video This teaching time will introduce the children to what they are learning for the day. Skit & Bible Story Video This teaching time will show the children how Pearl, Leaf, and Z learn: I Worship God When I Am Thankful. Application Video This teaching time will help the children review the Main Point and Bible Story. Picture Reveal (Bible Story Review Activity) This activity will help the children review the Bible Story. It will also help them remember our Main Point: I Worship God When I Am Thankful. Worship God Through Giving (Offering Classroom Activity) In this activity, the children will have the opportunity to give their offering. I Am Thankful...Chain (Craft Classroom Activity) In this activity, the children will make a paper chain to help them remember the Bible Story about being thankful. Thankful Song (Closing Classroom Activity) This activity will allow the children to sing about all the things they are thankful for. Instrument Memory Game (Pick Up Classroom Activity) This activity will allow the children to play a fun game that reminds them of their lesson for the day while they are waiting to be picked up. 1

3 Lesson 1 Large Group Lesson Instrument Find Drop Off Time Classroom Activity I Worship God When I Am Thankful Purpose: This activity will give the children the chance to search for pictures of instruments around the room after they are dropped off into their classroom. Description: The children will make their way around the room searching for instruments and learning their main point. Materials needed: For this activity, you will need this help sheet, crayons, one set of the Instrument Find/Lesson 1 pictures, and one copy per child of the Instrument Find Key from your Lesson Materials CD-ROM. To introduce the activity say: # 1 Note: For optional background music, set your CD player to repeat track 1 on your Center Stage Jr. Soundtrack CD. Welcome to our class today! Have you ever played a musical instrument before? Today, we are going to search for some instruments around the room. This is a paper that shows you all the instruments you can find. Take a crayon with you and when you find an instrument you can color it on this page. 6. When you have found all the instruments, come back and sit on the floor with me and we are going to find out what we are learning today. For detailed instructions on how to do this activity see the DVD. During the activity say: You all are doing a great job finding the instruments. Make sure you look high and low for all the instruments on your page. Did you find all the musical instruments on your page? Can I help you find an instrument you couldn t find? Let s all gather back together here on the floor. Did you notice that some of the musical instruments had words beside them? (Yes.) Well, those words tell us what we are learning today. 8. Who can find the violin again? 9. There is a word on this card. It says, I. 10. Now let s find the keyboard. Its word is Worship. We are talking about worshiping God today. 11. Worshiping God is showing Him that we love Him. 12. Good! Now, let s find the maracas. The word on them is God. That s because we worship God. 3

The word on the trumpet is I. 15. Now who can find the piano? That word is Am. 16. And last, who can find the clarinet? The word on there is Thankful. 17. So let me put all of these words together for you. 18. And it says, I Worship God When I Am Thankful. 19. Can you all say that with me with some motions? (Yes.) 20. I Worship God When I Am Thankful. 21. Good job! That s what we are learning today! I Worship God When I Am Thankful. After the activity say: Did you have fun looking for all of these instruments and finding out what we are learning today? (Yes.) That s great! We are going to meet up with some new friends today who are part of a band. They are learning, and helping us learn, about worshiping God. 9 Lesson 1 Large Group Lesson Thankful Poster Opening Classroom Activity I Worship God When I Am Thankful Purpose: This activity will allow the children to color a picture while being introduced to the Main Point: I Worship God When I Am Thankful. Description: The children will color a picture and glue it on butcher paper to make a poster. Before they put it on the butcher paper, they will tell everyone whether or not they are thankful for the thing they colored. Materials needed: For this activity, you will need this help sheet, the Thankful Poster/Lesson 1 pictures from your Lesson Materials CD- ROM, crayons, and glue. To introduce the activity say: 1. Who wants to help me make a big poster? 2. Great! Today we re learning: I Worship God When I Am Thankful, and we re going to make a Thankful Poster. 3. When we worship God, we show Him that we love Him. There are many ways to worship God. We can worship God by being thankful. What I want you to do is color one of these pictures. When everyone is finished, we will then glue it onto this poster. 7. Before you glue it down, I want you to tell me if you re thankful for the thing you colored and why or why not. 8. Let s get started! For detailed instructions on how to do this activity see the DVD. During the activity say: 1. You re all doing a great job coloring your pictures! 2. Are you ready to glue your picture on this poster? 3. Are you thankful for the thing you colored? Why or why not? Note: If they are not thankful for what they colored, try to help them think of reasons they should be thankful for it. For example, if they are not thankful for rain clouds, remind them that we have to have rain so the trees and flowers grow. After the activity say: You all did a wonderful job coloring your pictures and helping me make this Thankful Poster. Did you learn some new things to be thankful for? Bugs eat other bugs that are bad, look cool, make neat noises at night. Pool a fun place to keep cool in the summer, a place to play with your friends. Bike a fun way to get exercise, a way to get places quickly, something you can do with your friends. Friends make you feel good, play with you, someone to keep you company. Snack tasty things to eat, something you can share with friends. Toys something to keep you from getting bored, something you can play with your friends. Large Group Lesson Not thankful pictures Rain clouds - rain gives us water for the flowers and vegetables, rain fills up the lakes, rain washes away dirt. Bully - God loves the bully too, and we can be thankful that God loves everyone. Weeds weeds give us something to do in our gardens, they keep us busy, some of them look pretty. Frogs frogs eat the bad insects that kill our gardens. Frogs make neat sounds we can hear at night. 6

Description: The teacher will hold up a picture, and the children will get to take one jump forward if they can share a reason to be thankful for what or who is in the picture. The first child to the other side of the room wins the game. Materials needed: For this activity, you will need this help sheet and the Thankfulness Hop/Lesson 1 pictures from your Lesson Materials CD-ROM. To introduce the activity say: 1. Who wants to play a fun game? 2. Okay, line up against the wall. 3. Remember that today we are learning the lesson: I Worship God When I Am Thankful. 4. We are going to look at some pictures. 5. If you can tell me a reason to be thankful for the thing in the picture, you get to take one big jump forward. 6. The first person to the other side of the room is the winner. 7. Are you ready? Let s get started! Note: In order to extend the activity, you can have the children move across the room in other ways such as: tiptoeing, walking backwards, crawling, etc. For detailed instructions on how to do this activity see the DVD. 19 Lesson 1 Large Group Lesson Picture Reveal Bible Story Review Activity I Worship God When I Am Thankful Purpose: This activity will help the children review the Bible Story. It will also help them remember our Main Point: I Worship God When I Am Thankful. Description: The children will answer questions about the Bible Story. When they get a correct answer, they will see a portion of a picture from the Bible Story. As they answer more questions, more of the picture will be revealed. Materials needed: For this activity, you will need this help sheet. You will use the video section entitled Bible Story Review Activity on the DVD to go through this activity with your class. # 1 Note: For optional background music, set your CD player to repeat track 1 on your Center Stage Jr. Soundtrack CD. To introduce the activity say: 1. What are we learning today? (I Worship God When I Am Thankful.) 2. Right now, we are going to remember some things that happened in our Bible Story today. 3. You will see some pictures from the Bible Story, and I ll ask you some questions about each picture. 4. When you get the question right, that picture will turn over, and you will see a little bit of our last picture from the Bible Story. 5. Are you ready? For detailed instructions on how to do this activity see the DVD. During the activity say: 1. Was Miriam, in our Bible Story, thankful to God for protecting her and her family? (Yes.) Note: Click Play on your remote to reveal a portion of the final Bible Story picture. Great job! Miriam was thankful that God had protected her family while they were traveling in the desert. 2. What trapped Miriam and her people in the desert? (A big sea.) Note: Click Play on your remote to reveal a portion of the final Bible Story picture. Very good! Miriam and her people were all running from some bad people from Egypt. They got to the sea, but didn t know how to get so many people across. 3. How did God help Miriam and her people get across the sea? (He parted the waters so they could walk across.) Note: Click Play on your remote to reveal a portion of the final Bible Story picture. Excellent! God made the waters split apart. It was amazing! 19
20 Lesson 1 Large Group Lesson 4. What did Miriam and all the people do when God made the water split apart? (They walked between the walls of water to the other side.) Note: Click Play on your remote to reveal a portion of the final Bible Story picture. Very good! Miriam and all her people crossed to the other side of the sea safely. There they knew they would be safe from the mean men who were chasing them. After the activity say: 1. Alright, what do you see on the screen now? (Picture of the people worshiping God on the other side of the sea.) 2. Good! Today we are learning the lesson: I Worship God When I Am Thankful. 3. These people were so thankful to God for keeping them safe, they sang a song to worship Him. 4. You don t have to sing a song to tell God you are thankful. You can just say, Thank You, God. Summary: In our Bible Story, we learned that Miriam and her people were so thankful to God for keeping them safe that they stopped and worshiped God. 21 Lesson 1 Large Group Lesson I Am Thankful...Chain Craft Classroom Activity I Worship God When I Am Thankful Purpose: In this activity, the children will make a paper chain to help them remember the Bible Story about being thankful. Description: The children will decorate a link of a paper chain then add their link to the chain so they can remember to worship God by being thankful. Materials needed: For this activity, you will need this help sheet, the I Am Thankful Chain/Lesson 1 printout from the Lesson Materials CD- ROM, crayons, and a stapler or tape. Note: To make a larger chain, you can use some extra strips of colored paper. To introduce the activity say: # 1 Note: For optional background music, set your CD player to repeat track 1 on your Center Stage Jr. Soundtrack CD. Who can remember what we are learning today? (I Worship God When I Am Thankful.) That s right! In our Bible Story today we heard the story about Miriam and her people thanking God for keeping them safe in the desert. God helped them cross a big sea and kept them safe from some people who were chasing them. 4. They were so thankful to God that they stopped and worshiped Him. 5. Let s talk about some things we are thankful for today. 6. What are you thankful for? Note: You can help the children get started by telling them some things you are thankful for first. 7. We all have some great things to be thankful for. 8. When we are thankful, we worship God. 9. Right now, I m going to give each of you a piece of paper. 10. The paper says, I Am Thankful For 11. I will come around and write what you are thankful for on the paper. 12. While you are waiting for me, you can decorate the paper any way you want. 13. When we finish, we ll put all these papers together to make a long chain that shows what we are thankful for. 14. Let s get started! For detailed instructions on how to do this activity see the DVD. During the activity say: 1. Now that we have all finished our thankful papers, let s make them into a chain. Note: Place your first paper into a circle and staple or tape it together. Add each additional paper in the same manner, looping it through the previous link, to make a longer chain. 23

I Worship God When I Am Thankful. 8. Great job! I m going to hang up our Thankful Chain here in the room so we can remember that we have many things to be thankful for. After the activity say: Everyone did a good job adding to our chain. When we look at this chain, we can remember that we have a lot to be thankful for. We should worship God because He has given us those things. Summary: Today we have been learning the lesson: I Worship God When I Am Thankful. Description: The children will sing the Thankful Song to the tune of Mary Had a Little Lamb. Materials needed: For this activity, you will need this help sheet. To introduce the activity say: 1. Who can remember what we are learning today? (I Worship God When I Am Thankful.) 2. Good! Does everyone know the song Mary Had a Little Lamb? 3. Great! We re going to sing a new song to the same tune. 4. This song will help us think of some things that we are thankful for. 5. When we are thankful, we are worshiping God. 6. What are some things that you are thankful for? (Parents, house, clothes, friends, toys, etc.) 7. I ll sing it one time, and then I want all of you to join me. During the activity say: 1. The song goes like this Today, I am thankful for, thankful for, thankful for Today, I am thankful for, I am Thankful for my. Note: Have the children take turns filling in the blank with something they are thankful for. You may need to help them with some ideas such as: their house, friends, shoes, God, clothes, church, food, candy, flowers, etc. After the activity say: 1. Description: The children will play a game where they try to make a match with some picture cards. Each picture will reveal either an instrument or a part of the Bible Story from that day s lesson. Materials needed: For this activity you will need this help sheet and two sets of the Instrument Memory/Lesson 1 pictures from your Lesson Materials CD-ROM. To introduce the activity say: It was so much fun spending time with the band today and learning how to worship God. Can you help me remember what we learned today? I Worship God When I Am Thankful. That s right! In our Bible Story Miriam and her people were thankful to God for keeping them safe in the desert. They sang a song to worship God and give Him thanks. Right now, we are going to play a game. I have some cards here that are face down. 7. There are also some cards scattered around our room that match these cards. 8. Each of you will take a turn and turn over one card and then go find a card around the room. Note: Scatter the cards around the room before you begin the activity. For detailed instructions on how to do this activity see the DVD. During the activity say: 1. Okay, you go first and turn over a card. 2. Now you need to find a match somewhere else around the room. 3. Great! Let s talk about what s on your cards. Note: Use the picture key below to guide you through what to say for each match. Continue this way until everyone has been released from your class or all of the matches have been made. Picture Key: 1. Have fun doing these activities as a family: Bible Story: Exodus 15:1-21 Miriam was Moses sister, and they sang a song to God when He parted the Red Sea to save their people. This week, read the Song of Moses and Miriam in Exodus 15:1-21 and then talk about how they worshiped God by being thankful to Him. Activity 1: Picture Book Grab a book with lots of pictures, and see how many things your children can point out to be thankful for. Talk about why we should thank God for each thing. Activity 2: Thank You Card Have your children make a thank you card for God. They can color the front and then you can help them write things inside that they want to thank God for. I Worship God When I Am Thankful!
