1 Hickory Grove Response Area Two December 20 Welcome to all my readers; Thank you for taking the time to read another addition of ON THE BEAT; this is the forum where I can share information about the Hickory Grove Division Response Area 2. The holidays are here and many of you may be traveling out of town, you can call our division office ( ) and request a zone check for the time you will be gone. In addition, it is Christmas shopping time for many of you and with that will be several trips to the stores to purchase gifts for your friends and family. I ask that you please not leave valuables in your cars or if you must, please lock them in your trunk. I do not want to have any of you victimized during the holidays. Cold mornings have arrived, Please remember not to leave your vehicles unattended while running, I don t want to see anyone fall victim to an Auto Theft. Thank you for taking the time to review another issue of my newsletter. If you have anything you would like for me to add or to pass on here, please feel free to me at ebrady@cmpd.org and I will do my best to include it in future issues. Lieutenant Eric Brady CMPD Hickory Grove Division: Response Area 2 Phone: ebrady@cmpd.org

2 Crime Prevention Tips Crime can happen any day to any one regardless of where they live, what they do for a living, or who they are. Although people live under the threat of crime every day, there are steps that one can take to help prevent them from being as easy target. Being aware and prepared can help many avoid the various dangers presented by criminals seeking easy targets. The following crime prevention tips can help individuals and families take control of their lives and households to help make them less of a target for criminal activity. Home Security and Safety Follow strict security procedures in the home, such as locking all doors and windows when leaving, even if it s just for a short time. Learn to recognize who belongs in the neighborhood. Report suspicious activity to the police. Provide visibility around the house by leaving lights on after dark or having motion detector lights around the property. This ensures that there are no dark areas around the house in which a person could hide. Always lock doors even if someone is home. Unlocked doors are the easiest way for a criminal to enter a household. Never let anyone know that there is one person alone in a house at any time. Do not tell people at the door this information. Also, do not post this information on social networking sites. Vehicle Security Try to park in well lit, open areas, and in view of security camera. The more populated and secure the area, the less likely a robbery will occur. Never leave valuable items out in the open in a vehicle. Either remove them from the car or place inside the glove box or under seats where others cannot see them. While driving, keep doors and windows locked to prevent a carjacking. Also, always lock car doors when leaving a vehicle. When walking back to a parked car, look underneath vehicle and in back seat after entering a car to make sure no one is under or in the car. Do not leave helmet or riding equipment with a motorcycle after parking it. Cover a motorcycle when unattended. Many thieves look to steal certain models and will be unwilling to risk setting off an alarm when lifting the cover. Chain and lock bicycles to a secure unmovable item when leaving it unattended Geographic s for Response Area 2 Hickory Grove Division s Response Area 2 consists of approximately 7.5 square miles of area and 76 street miles. There are approximately 22,700 people that reside in Response Area 2. It consists mostly of residential areas with either single or multi-family homes, apartments or condominiums. There are several roads that make up the border, but the major thoroughfares include Lawyers Rd., WT Harris Blvd., Plaza Rd. Ext., Plott Rd., Pence Rd. & Albemarle Rd. We border the incorporated area of Mint Hill with Independence High School at that border. We also have the Northeast Middle School.

You do not want to advertise what new things you got for Christmas. I look forward to seeing you soon. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! 5 Seasonal Prevention Tips Home Holiday Security Tips The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department would like to provide you with some home security tips. 1. Make sure your home is well lit. Turn on outside lights, spotlights, motions lights, etc. Leave several lights on timers while you are away to give your home that lived in look. 2. Keep all shrubbery trimmed. Do not allow shrubbery to conceal windows or doors. 3. Remove anything a burglar could climb up on to gain entry or use to knock out a window or door; items such as ladders, tools, tables, and chairs. 4. All exterior doors should be solid, rather than hollow core. 5. Don t leave garage roll down doors open, even while you are home or while you are doing yard work. 6. Use a deadbolt lock to secure your doors. A good deadbolt should have a 1 throw, if you have glass within 40 of the lock a burglar could reach in and unlock the door. A double cylinders lock (this type needs a key on both sides to unlock) should be used if glass is near the lock. 7. If you are going away contact a trusted neighbor or friend to pick up your mail, newspaper and other delivered items. 8. Try not to leave gifts in open view. This is an invitation to burglars. 9. Don t advertise new gifts or purchases. Break up cartons before leaving them at the curb or dispose of them another way the morning of trash pick up. 10. Don t forget to engrave new gifts or purchases with your Drivers license number. 11. Don t open your door to strangers. Be wary of solicitors and salespersons. If a stranger asks to use your telephone, tell them to stay outside, lock the door behind you and make the call for them. Never let a stranger inside your home.. Don t give any information about yourself or your neighbor to a stranger.

6 Business Security Grant Program Reducing the Opportunity for Crime The City has a matching grant program that can reimburse 50% - 60% of eligible security expenses for businesses and apartment communities located in targeted areas. In Hickory Grove Response Area 2, that means businesses located on and west of Harris Blvd. How does the program work? It s a simple process, but there are certain steps that must be followed. Once you submit an application, a Hickory Grove Division Officer will visit your business to conduct a security survey. The Officer will make crime prevention recommendations tailored to your specific location and business type. These recommendations are eligible for participation in the grant program. You ll need to provide cost estimates to the Neighborhood & Business Services Department (N&BS) before doing any of the work. Once this is done and a grant contract is signed you can complete the security installations, pay your contractor(s), and submit your payment documentation to N&BS for reimbursement. How much can I qualify for? The program provides 50% reimbursement for eligible security improvements; 60% reimbursement may be available on a case-by-case basis. Most buildings can qualify for up to $5,000. Shopping center owners can be eligible for up to $20,000 and individual shopping center tenants are eligible for up to $2,000. Apartment communities are eligible for up to $15,000. How do I get started? Visit for program details, to verify that your property is in the eligible geography and to download an application. If you re a business operating in the Hickory Grove Division and located on or west of Harris Blvd. please take advantage of this program and let s work together to reduce opportunities for crime in our community!
