1 IMMIGRANT PERSPECTIVES EDUKIT HISTORIC STEWART FARM

2 KIT DESCRIPTION This kit focuses on teaching with artefacts and archival resources which are relevant to BC and Surrey s history. From 1890 to 1920, Chinese men lived and worked alongside the Stewart family on the shores of the Nicomekl River. This kit will focus on immigration policies supporting European immigration, the governmental systems which discriminated against Chinese immigration throughout this time period, what lifestyles immigrants to Canada lived at the Stewart Farm, and the different conditions Canadian society placed on immigrants to Surrey. The Edukit Includes 1) A suitcase holding the artefacts that will be used with each activity. 2) A map bundle. 3) A USB stick with documents, lesson plans, extension activities and other resources. Rental Details Cost: $50 Loan Duration: 3 weeks Pick Up: Fridays or Saturdays during business hours (or by other arrangement) Drop Off: Friday, Saturday or Sunday during business hours Classroom Preparation Ask students to do family research about the generation prior to their immediate household OR about one ancestor in their family who immigrated to Canada. If your students are recent immigrants, ask them where and when they travelled from. Divide the class into 5-6 groups. Small groups will help all the students enjoy each lesson. Ensure a projector and screen are available for the duration of the kit.

3 CURRICULUM CONTEXT This kit is designed to complement the Grade 5 and Grade 6 Social Studies curriculum, with extension activities focused on the Social Studies, Language Arts, and Mathematics curriculums. The education kit supports the learning outcomes listed below by providing students an opportunity to examine, interpret, and compare the immigration, lifestyle, and work of Scottish and Chinese settlers at the turn of the twentieth century. Emphasis will be placed on critical thinking skills, observing and comparing information available from various data sources, and drawing conclusions about the lives of early Canadian immigrants based on artifacts, props, archival documents, and media resources. Students will discuss issues faced by immigrants in the 19 th and 21 st centuries, including the Chinese Immigration Act(s), the Chinese Head Tax, the Chinese Exclusion Act, living conditions, and government systems. At the end of the rental period students should be able to: Understand the challenges of the past facing immigrants to Canada, and the different systems put in place to screen those coming to Canada. Understand how government systems affect equality in living conditions. Use inquiry processes and skills to gather, interpret and communicate findings on early immigrants to Surrey and the Chinese Immigration Act (Head Tax). Give examples of cultural traditions of immigrants that were brought to Surrey in the late 19 th century, specifically Scottish and Chinese and link to examples of traditions being practiced today. Describe the changing nature of Canadian immigration over time, and compare the challenges that immigrants faced then to challenges they face now. Understand the past and current ideas surround Chinese immigration to Canada and the Head Tax based on media resources, and be able to discuss and explain the reasons why Canada apologized for the Head Tax in Classroom Preparation Ask students to do family research about the generation prior to their immediate household OR about one ancestor in their family who immigrated to Canada. If your students are recent immigrants, ask them where and when they travelled from. Divide the class into 5-6 groups. Small groups will help all the students enjoy each lesson. Ensure a projector and screen are available for the duration of the kit.
