Here s what you need to know. The Township of Langley is located in the southwest corner of the province of British Columbia. The northern municipal boundary is the Fraser River; the southern boundary is the United States border. Our western neighbours are the City of Surrey and the City of Langley; our eastern neighbour is the City of Abbotsford. The western boundary is 196 Street (except where bordered by the City of Langley); the eastern boundary is 276 Street. There are six Fraser Valley Regional Library branches within the Township of Langley. GLOSSARY OF TERMS: Recent immigrants are immigrants who arrived in Canada between January 1, 2006 and May 10, Metro Vancouver comprises 21 municipalities, one electoral district and one First Nation located in the southwest corner of British Columbia s mainland. Census refers to the population Census of Canada, which is taken at five-year intervals and counts persons and households and a wide variety of characteristics. 3 POPULATION AND IMMIGRATION TRENDS (2011) Immigration Trends ( ) Census 2011 shows that Township of Langley had a total population of 104,177, an approximate increase of 11.2% between 2006 and In 2011 immigrants represented 18.0% (18,520) of the total population. The immigrant population increased by 38.8% between 2001 and 2011, significantly higher than the increase of 23.7% for Metro Vancouver. From 2006 to 2011, approximately 530 immigrants settled annually in Township of Langley. s by Period of Immigration (NHS 2011) NHS 2011 shows that there were 18,515 immigrants living in Township of Langley, of which 11.7% were recent immigrants. This was notably lower than Metro Vancouver s proportion of 17.0%. 4 Youth and Seniors by Period of Immigration (NHS 2011) 21.7% of 1,500 immigrant youth (15-24 years) were recent immigrants. Moreover, recent immigrant youth made up 14.9% of the township s recent immigrant population of 2,175. 6 Share of Population by Religion Ranked by % of Total Population In 2011 close to three quarters (73.9%) of immigrants reported that they had a religious affiliation. This was notably higher than the 54.1% reported by Canadian-born residents. Christianity was the most commonly reported religious affiliation for both immigrants and Canadian-born residents. 12 LABOUR FORCE ACTIVITY (NHS 2011) Employment / Unemployment Rates in 2010 for Population Aged 15 Years and Over In 2010 there were 10,630 immigrants and 885 recent immigrants in the labour force. and recent immigrant labour forces represented 18.2% and 1.7% of the township s total labour force respectively. The unemployment rates of immigrants was 7.1%, somewhat higher thanthe 5.9% of their Canadian counterparts. Moreover, recent immigrants experienced a two-digit unemployment rate at 14%. youth (20 to 24 years) experienced a much higher unemployment rate at 27.7%. 8.6% of immigrant seniors were unemployed in 2010, slightly higher than the 7.1% of the total immigrant population. 15 INCOME (NHS 2011) Total Income in 2010 of Population Aged 15 Years and Over In 2010, 36.8% of the recent immigrant population aged 15 years and over were in the low income bracket. This rate was dramatically higher than the 11.4% measured for the total population. In 2010 the median income of the recent immigrant population was $16,236, which was significantly less than the median income of total immigrants ($28,793). Moreover, the median income of recent immigrants was almost 50% less than that of total population ($33,749). The project also aims to recognize, promote, support, sustain, and complement the tremendous settlement services offered by partner libraries and by other immigrant serving organizations and community groups. NewToBC helps partner libraries adapt to the evolving needs of newcomer immigrants by identifying emerging opportunities, by adopting promising practices, and by supporting innovative settlement and integration services. Ultimately, NewToBC is meant to enhance each of the partner libraries ability to help build welcoming and diverse communities.
