1 UFW Texas Records Part 1, Papers, linear feet Part 2, Papers, linear feet Accession # LR Part 1 of the UFW Texas Records is divided into two series. Series 1 relates to the boycott papers from the late 1960s and early 1970s, when the UFW was organizing boycotts against companies like Safeway Supermarkets, and against products like Heublein wines and California grapes and lettuce. Series 2 comprises the office files which document the establishment of the UFW, particularly the Service Center in McAllen, Texas and the UFW s involvement with a variety of local organizations including STACO (South Texas Association of Community Organizations) and La Raza Unida, a Chicano political group. The files show the Texas farm workers concern with the environment and the health of their members when one of their organizations, Nutritional Enrichment, Inc. became involved with a legal struggle against the Texas Air Control Board (TACB) over the issue of sugar cane burning. In addition, An extensive portion of these files involve Texas organizer Tony Orendain s radio program La Voz Del Campesino. There are a number of correspondence files from that are letters from farm workers asking for assistance, or complimenting the show. In addition, there are a number of tapes of the broadcasts and printed summaries of the programs. PLEASE NOTE: Folders are computer-arranged alphabetically within each series in this finding aid, but may actually be dispersed throughout several boxes in the collection. Note carefully the box number for each folder heading. Important subjects in the collection: Boycotts United States Chicano community La Raza Unida Party La Voz Del Campesino Texas Farm Workers Union Important correspondents in the collection: Bentsen, Lloyd (Senator) Chandler, Bill
