2 INTRODUCTION The Tennessee Dental Association was the first professional association of dentists in the state, and played a significant role in developing and enforcing professional standards of practice. News of innovations and dental health initiatives in the state were disseminated to members through two publications, and at yearly conventions. The materials in this collection include both records of the association and of its publications. Although the association s newsletter is represented from 1947 to 1971, no copies of the association s other publication, the monthly Journal are in the collection. There are, however, administrative documents which include correspondence, audit reports, and workshop and convention documentation. The records were donated to the Tennessee State Library and Archives in six separate accessions in 1994 and 1995 and with the exception of the past president s files, were in no particular order. Six cubic feet of newspaper clippings, accumulated by a clipping service, were deemed not significant and were destroyed. The remainder of the collection was preserved intact, except for the removal of duplicate items. The collection has been microfilmed and there are no restrictions on its use.

3 SCOPE AND CONTENT This collection includes a number of different types of records, relating to the association s publications, legislative lobbying, and efforts at public dental health education. The bulk of the documents date between 1930 and 1980, although there are some minor exceptions. There are some catalogs of dental supplies from the 1920 s, and an insurance file from 1931 which pre-date the bulk date, and two pieces of correspondence and one photograph from 1982 which post date the bulk date. The records have been categorized by the type of document, and then put in order by date. Box 1 contains audit reports from 1935 through These are the best source for financial information about the association, containing membership information, dues collections, publication costs and other expenses. Box 2 contains general correspondence from 1935 through The correspondence for the years 1936, 1937, 1949, 1952, , and 1963 were not included in the materials donated to TSLA. Box 3 contains copies of manuscripts. Articles submitted for publication in the Association Newsletter or Journal became property of the association, as were speeches made at the annual conventions. The association occasionally published the manuscripts for dissemination to members. The manuscripts were undated, and were arranged alphabetically by title. Box 4 contains three notebooks, two that were labeled history and one compiled by Dr. Oscar Chromwell Tidwell. All three primarily contain articles and clippings relating to the history of the dental profession in general. All three books were removed from non-archival bindings, but were preserved in their original order. Boxes 5 7 also contain files that were retained in their original order. Beginning in 1957, the association began keeping past presidents files, which in most cases contained biographical information about the current president and his photograph, programs for each year s annual convention, a membership directory, and most importantly the reports of the standing committees under that president s term. Although there are scattered files related to some standing committees for various years contained in the subject files, the published reports for 1957 through 1971 are found only in the past presidents files. Boxes 8 10 relate to the association s efforts at outreach both to the general public and to members. In Box 8, there are four books of undated press releases related primarily to dental hygiene, followed in Box 9 by scripts to a series of radio and television broadcasts. Boxes 9 and 10 contain copies of the association s monthly newsletter, a complete collection from 1949 through Boxes contain a miscellany of documents that were grouped alphabetically by subject. On occasion, as necessity dictated, special committees other than the standing committees would be formed to explore and report on a particular issue, such as the benefits for World War II veterans. Also included in the subject files are disparate documents such as early dental supply catalogs, a scrapbook of dental-related cartoons, and a small number of photographs (see Appendix 1 for photograph list).

4 This collection of records can provide a wealth of information about the development of the dental profession in Tennessee, the issues facing dentists, the advancement of dental technology, and the operation of a professional organization over time. Several of the manuscripts contained in the collection relate the history of dentistry and of the T.S.D.A. from the beginning of the professional era, so a relatively complete history can be easily compiled. The membership rosters are a complete record of practicing dentists in the state, and the manuscripts, press releases and newsletters chronicle changes in dental knowledge and technology over a fifty year period. HISTORY The Tennessee State Dental Association (T.S.D.A.) was formed by a resolution adopted by a group of 12 dentists who met in Memphis on June 24, Designed as a constituent organization of the American Dental Association which was established in 1859, the stated purpose of the state association was to promote public welfare by the advancement of the dental profession. Early focus was placed on advocacy of legislation, adhering to a professional code of ethics, and on establishing dental colleges in Tennessee. An act to regulate the practice of dentistry in Tennessee and to prosecute violators became law in A board of six examiners was appointed by the Governor and authorized to examine graduates of recognized dental schools and issue certification. The original TSDA constitution specified 16 standing committees (these changed over time as needs changed) and authorized the formation of nine district societies. Annual meetings provided an opportunity to hear lectures on new procedures and technology, address upcoming legislation, and hear reports from the districts and the committees. The TSDA Journal, published quarterly, and the TSDA Newsletter, published monthly, kept members aware of issues, educational efforts, and innovations in technology. Manuscripts submitted to the Journal or Newsletter, or presented as a lecture in the annual meetings became property of the Tennessee Dental Association. The Tennessee Dental Association is governed by its legislative body, the general assembly, composed of every member of the organization. The administrative body is a board of trustees, which is composed of the elected officers and nineteen voting trustees. The trustees are nominated by the eight district societies, which are geographic units and are composed of several counties. Formerly quartered in rented office space in the Bennie Dillon Building at 701 Church Street in Nashville, TDA is currently headquartered at 2104 Sunset Place in Nashville.
