4 FOREWORD All over the world sociol and economic structures are changing rapidly. These changes demand continuing improvements in information technology. The ability to provide high quality data and reliable statistics must grow to meet this demand. The State Institute of Statistics of Turkey bears the important responsibility of collecting, analyzing, and publishing data on Turkey's social and economic condition. The Institute continually strives to improve its technology, research methods, and analyticol capability. We believe that the availability of reliable and current statistics can ploy an important role in the process of democratization, public awareness, and the improvement of the human condition. The aim of SIS publications is to offer statistical data to public and private institutions, both foreign and domestic, in order to present a clear picture of Turkey-both its current conditions and its future potential.
