Thank you Ocean View Councilman Frank Twardzik for introducing Chief Kenneth McLaughlin. Thank you as well to Mike Harrington for introducing yourself to our membership, as well as presenters Monica Coleman on candidate training and Sandra Ware concerning the Sussex County Comprehensive Plan update. This has been a very busy couple of weeks since our April meeting with the State Committee Dinner on Friday, April 28 th where Roger Stone was the keynote and presented a very informative speech. On Saturday when the convention convened, the delegates elected a new group of officers, including Mike Harrington - Chair, Emily Taylor - Vice Chair, Dennis Cini - Treasurer and our member, Carol Bodine, who was reelected as Secretary. Congratulations to all of you. On Wednesday, May 3 rd, I had the privilege of traveling to Alexandria, Virginia and Washington, DC with DFRW President Paula Manolakos, Kent County RW President Trish Rodriguez and DEGOP Vice Chair Emily Taylor. We stopped by the NFRW Headquarters to meet NFRW President Carrie Almond and NFRW Political Director Terri Hauser for a tour of the NFRW Building and to make plans for bringing another Campaign Management School to our area. That evening we attended the 10th Annual Susan B. Anthony (SBA) Gala in the Andrew Mellon Auditorium on Constitution Avenue, where Vice President Pence was the keynote. On Thursday morning we went to breakfast in the Trump Hotel where we heard from Senators Grassley and McConnell. Finally, I am pleased to announce that Barbara Jadick and Angie Ross have agreed to serve as Campaign Cochairs for SCRWC. Cathy Watts cwattsup2@gmail.com

The Officers can be contacted by phone UPCOMING MEETINGS Our next meeting is Wednesday, May 24th, 2017 at King s Creek Country Club. This dinner meeting starts at 6:00 PM with food service at 6:45PM. We encourage you to arrive early for the social hour. The buffet dinner cost will be $30 per person. NRA Board member and former Chair of the Republican Party of Hawaii, Willes Lee, will be our keynote speaker for the evening. Advance reservations are required. Please contact Linda Rehm, by at jlrehm@aol.com or by phone at to make your reservation. Reservations should be made by Wednesday, May 17 th. Reservations are not be accepted after Sunday, May 21 st. Please remember that if you make a reservation and are unable to attend, you are responsible to pay for your meal. The club cannot absorb those costs. Gluten free meals may be ordered when you arrive for the meeting, but a reservation is still required. Please advise your caller or Linda Rehm if you have a special food requirement. 3 AMERICA S FUTURE HAS US WEARING NFRW SHADES April 2017 Meeting Highlights IF YOU HEAR GUNSHOTS, BE A SURVIVOR NOT A STATISTIC SCRWC held their April 26, 2017 meeting at Kings Creek Country Club in Rehoboth Beach featuring the topic of protecting yourself against a potential mass shooting. Republican leaders from Delaware visiting NFRW HQ in Old Town Alexandria on Wednesday, May 3 rd. L-R): Trish Rodriguez, President of the Kent Co. RWC; Emily Taylor, newly elected 29 year old Vice Chair of the Delaware GOP and National Federation of Republican Women President Carrie Almond with Reagan; Cathy Watts, Delaware FRW 1st VP and President Sussex County RWC; and Paula Manalakos, Delaware FRW President. SUSAN B. ANTHONY GALA A lovely evening with Ellen Barrosse, DE National Committeewoman (center). Our featured speaker of the evening was Ocean View Chief of Police, Ken McLaughlin. Mr. McLaughlin has an impressive background in law enforcement and firearms training. A graduate of the FBI National Academy at Quantico, the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development School and The Police supervisory School at Penn State University, he was appointed as Chief of Police for Ocean View in His development of the Shooter Response Plan has made Ocean View the Gold Standard for small town police departments. During his presentation, Chief McLaughlin made us aware that although mass shootings are not new to society, the way we handle these situations has evolved. He highlighted a case of mass shooting in a high school where many more lives could have been saved if the proper steps had been taken. His presentation gave three key elements to survival. First up is to AVOID the shooter. To do that you must be aware of your surroundings and know every exit from the room. This includes windows even on floors above ground level. If you hear gunshots, leave immediately and call 911. Hiding or playing dead will not deter a shooter intent on killing. This murderer will come back to make sure of his victims. Next up is to DENY the shooter access by barricading with any method you can devise. Finally, DEFEND as a group. Rush the shooter and try to disarm by kicking, hitting and going for his eyes. The response time for police can be from 3 to 15 minutes depending on the location of the event. Once on the scene, always follow the police instructions. Their first priority is to stop the killing. The victims are attended to next. If you have a weapon yourself, tell the police so they will not think you are another threat. Chief McLaughlin

4 gave us a lot of information which may make the difference between our becoming a statistic or a survivor. It is the mission of the Sussex County Republican Women s Club to assist in the election of Republican candidates, act as an advocate for the Republican Party s principles, and empower women to participate in the political process. SCRWC, the largest Republican Women s Club in Delaware, has been actively engaging women in the political process for more than six decades.
