It was informative to receive updates from the committee during the negotiations process. It is the responsibility of the WHEA Administrative Vice President to be the Chairperson for the negotiations team. 2 WHEA W Dec Page 2 WHEA, CEA & NEA News WHEA Workshops On Tuesday, October 2, 2018 WHEA held the workshop 10 Steps to Proficient or Higher at Conard High School from 4 PM until 5:30 PM. CEA s Kate Field presented tips and strategies to help teachers achieve a proficient or higher summative rating. On Tuesday, October 30, 2018 WHEA held a workshop on Retirement. This informative meeting was held at Conard High School from 4 PM until 5:30 PM. It was presented by CEA s Robyn Kaplan-Cho. CEA News On Saturday, October 20, 2018 CEA held its New Teacher Conference. It was held at the Heritage Hotel and Conference Center, Southbury, CT. from 8:30 AM until 2 PM CEA Human & Civil Rights Awards There are several CEA Human and Civil Rights Awards for which members can nominate other members. There is also one award the CEA Presidential Award, for which the nominee does not need to be a CEA member. The awards are Susan B. Anthony Prudence Crandall Equality Award, Mahatma Gandhi Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Award, Katherine Dunham Award, Helen Keller Anne Sullivan Memorial Award, John Rogers Memorial Award, CEA Award for Leadership in Hispanic Educational and Community Relationships, CEA Humanitarian Award for Leadership in Recent Immigrant Educational and Community Relationships, Harvey Milk Sylvia Rivera Award for Challenging Discrimination Related to Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation. The descriptions of the awards, policies and procedures for nominations and selections, and the nomination form are on the CEA website at The deadline for nominations and supporting materials is February 1, 2019.
3 WHEA W Dec Page 3 WHEA, CEA & NEA News cont. Election The winners in the midterm elections held on Tuesday, November 6, 2018 are U. S. Senate Chris Murphy, Governor-elect Ned Lamont, U. S. House 1st District John Larson, 2nd District Joe Courtney, 3rd District Rosa DeLauro, 4th District Jim Himes, 5th District Jahana Hayes. The winners for the State Representative are 18th Assembly District Jillian Gilchrest, 19th District Derek Slap, and 20th District Joe Verrengia and for the State Senate in the 5th District Beth Bye. One of the newest winners was Jahana Hayes, 2016 National Teacher of the Year. She was a history and civics teacher in Waterbury and a professional development supervisor in Waterbury, CT. She is now on her way to Washington D. C. as the 5th District U. S. House of Representatives legislator from CT. Jahana said, Teachers are nation-builders. That s our job: To effect change, to improve outcomes. Isn t that the same job of Congress? She is Connecticut s first African American Democrat in Congress. Congratulations to all of the elected officials.

6 Page 6 Current Issues National, State News On November 6, 2018 the gubernatorial election took place. The next Governor will be Democrat Ned Lamont and the next Lieutenant Governor will be Susan Bysiewicz. They will be sworn in on January 9, Ned Lamont will become the 89th Governor of Connecticut. Local News On Tuesday, November 20, 2018 the West Hartford Board of Education tabled the vote on school start times. The proposal is either to keep the start times the same or to change them. The proposed change for middle school is from 7:40 AM to 2:30 PM (presently 8:00 AM until 2:50 PM), for high school is from 8:15 AM until 3 PM (presently 7:30 AM until 2:15 PM) and for elementary school it is either 8:40 AM until 3:25 PM or 8:45 AM until 3:30 PM (presently 8:35 AM until 3:20 PM). Athletics would be impacted with a time change. The financial impact was not figured in nor was the question of private schools changing their times as well.
