Eleanor Roosevelt 2015 is off to a great start! Many thanks to all who worked so hard to make our January Installation meeting special, especially our 2014 GFWC-HB President Julie Wolfe and our GFWC-NC President Gay Warren, who officiated the evening. Everyone deserves recognition for all the great work they did in 2014 for our community and GFWC. I am proud and honored to serve as your President in 2015, and I look forward to all the great work we will continue to do together this year.
2 Welcome to our new members: Linda Clarke, Jan Kelley, Emily Norton and Jennifer Norton. We are happy to have you join us. And my sincere thanks to the new Executive Board, Appointments and CSP Chairman for your willingness to lead and take on new positions. Our organization grows stronger by continuing to encourage and embrace new ideas, and we look forward to yours! The January Art Festival resulted in many blue ribbons for clubwomen and students, who will participate in the District Art Festival on February 28th. Good luck to all. We look forward to following your progress. Our signature event for 2015; the 7 th Annual Blooming for a Cause Charity Gala will be held on April 18th at 10:45am at the Sea Trail Convention Center. The February meeting will be a great opportunity to learn more about this year s GALA. Plans are well under way, and we will need all of your support to make it another successful event. Here are some additional upcoming events and dates for you to remember as we celebrate this 125 th year of our Federation: February 28, 2015 GFWC District 7 Arts Festival will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church in Southport, NC. We will have central registration as a club so you will want to send your registration fees to Kris Thomas, 577 Riverwood Dr Bolivia NC Guests and Members are $15.00 and add $5.00 if you plan to wear denim. Checks should be made payable to GFWC-HB. March 7, 2015, GFWC-NC State Arts Festival 2015, Campbell University, Buis Creek. Registration for the 2015 is now available online. All the Best, Karen GFWC of Holden Beach January Meeting Minutes GFWC of Holden Beach Tuesday, January 20, 2015 Holden Beach Chapel Fellowship Hall Holden Beach, NC GFWC of Holden Beach January 2015 Business Meeting The GFWC-HB January Meeting was held on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at the Holden Beach Chapel. President Julie Wolfe called the meeting to order at 6:30 pm and welcomed everyone. President Wolfe asked the membership to welcome special guest GFWC- NC President Gay Warren. Caroline Galan presented the devotion with a focus on new beginnings and 1 st Vice President Karen Throckmorton led recitation of the Club Collect and the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America.
4 The minutes of the November Meeting were approved as published. Committee Reports See Attached a. International Outreach Chairman Suzanne Gurski b Charity Gala Chairman Donna Geise provided updates on the Gala plans c. Arts CSP Chairman Doris Kelly and Arts CSP Committee Member Caroline Galan presented the 2015 GFWC-HB Clubwomen Art Festival winners GFWC-HB Annual Award Presentation President Wolfe stated that once a year a few members are recognized for their extraordinary contributions. 11 President Wolfe thanked everyone for agreeing to serve and presented GFWC-NC President Gay Warren a thank you gift. She presented 2015 President Karen Throckmorton with her President s pin President Karen Throckmorton thanked everyone for the opportunity to represent the club and presented 2014 President Julie Wolfe with a thank you gift from the Executive Board and her Past President s pin. Caroline Galan gave the closing prayer Meeting was adjourned at 7:45 p.m. Donna Geise, Recording Secretary January 20, 2015 GFWC Committee Reports 1) International Outreach Chairman Suzanne Gurski reported that the goal of raising $900 was reached. Three schools of fingerling fish will be purchased to benefit families in Third World Countries. 2) Donna Geise, 2015 Charity Gala Chairman Letters and flyers were delivered to the printer and have reached our sponsors. We have received donations in our P.O. Box Silent Auction/Sponsorship/Solicitation Chairperson, Patti Hogan, has scheduled lunch/solicitation meetings. We met at Angelo s on Thursday, January 15 and Hop s Brewing Company, Wilmington, on Monday. January 20. Our next meeting is at Ports O Call in Southport
12 on Wednesday, January 28 at 12:30. We will have lunch and then solicit businesses in the area. Please come, if available. We need everyone s help. If you visited specific businesses last year, a list of those businesses will be ed to you. We ll be asking that you visit these businesses again, and if unavailable, let her know. Our next Gala meeting is this Thursday, January 22, at 2:30 at Woodmen of the World. Everyone is invited! The following clubwomen will
14 have first place items in these categories judged at the District level: Bennie Hall - mixed media painting Doris Kelley - acrylic painting, nature craft, jewelry Linda Sturgill - cross stitch, ceramics Carol Ann Lohman - painting on metal or other surfaces, open category Caroline Galan - photography scenes Maureen Wright - paper craft, photography still life Judi Stankowich - poetry Over 140 student entries were submitted. Nine arts and craft items and four literature selections will advance to the District event. Remember that all clubwomen are welcome to attend the District 7 Arts Festival on February 28 in Southport and the GFWC-NC Arts Festival on March 7 at Campbell University. The Arts CSP is making plans for our club's March meeting. The Jazz Band from West Brunswick High School has been invited to present our program. We are pleased to be able to recognize student musicians, as well as the student artists and writers featured in January. Education Community Service Program Judy Brock, and Jane Decker, Co-Chairmen The Carey Paige Truesdell scholarship recipient is Haley Watson. Haley is a senior at North Brunswick High School, and she plans to study to become a nurse. Haley will represent GFWC of Holden Beach in the District 7 competition for the Sallie Southall Cotten Scholarship at the District 7 Arts Festival.
15 International Outreach Community Service Program Linda Sturgill, Chairman Currently the International Outreach CSP is in the early planning stages. There is a dinner meeting planned for in March to discuss our outreach charity. Please watch future issues of our newsletter for what is happening on the International Outreach CSP and who will be our new GFWC Partner. There will be lots of surprises/activities you will want to participate in. A date to remember: March 8 th International Woman s Day Community Service Program Committees I am very excited about 2015! Thanks to all the CSP Chairman for stepping up to the task. I am sure we will have some fun this year.
