1 PAGE 1 SERVING SUNNYSIDE-WOODSIDE AND LONG ISLAND CITY VOL. 85, NO. 38 WOODSIDE, L.I.C., N.Y. FREE See Ad On Page 8 On September 17, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer officially kicked off the fifth round of Participatory Budgeting with the announcement of the dates and locations for six Participatory Budgeting neighborhood assemblies to be held throughout the 26th District from September 20th through October 11th. The Council Member is committing at least $1,000,000 from the City Council budget to the projects that receive the most votes from residents of the 26th Council District. Last year, 7,100 people voted in person and online and Council Member Van Bramer allocated $2,579,000. I am excited to kick off a new round of Participatory Budgeting with the announcement of six neighborhood assemblies I will be hosting throughout the 26th District, said Van Bramer. Last year, we saw a record number of people from our community get involved in the Participatory Budgeting process and make their voices heard. For this fifth round, I hope to build on that enthusiasm and get even more people to share their ideas, serve as budget delegates, and vote for projects that will improve our community. I am proud to once again commit at least $1,000,000 for the top projects selected by residents next year. I encourage everyone to come out to our neighborhood assemblies and help get the Participatory Budgeting process started! On Thursday the 20th, Van Bramer held his first of six neighborhood assemblies at libraries, the Queensbridge, Ravenswood, and Woodside Houses, and at PS 361. This year, each neighborhood assembly will have a specific theme, with assemblies focusing on education, housing, parks, transportation, and libraries. Residents will learn about the Participatory Budging process and are encouraged to propose capital projects to be included on the official Participatory Budgeting ballot to be voted on next year. 3 PAGE 3 911: AN AFTERTHOUGHT by Sharon M. Cadiz Perhaps the week or month after 911, or the troubling weeks before are a good time to ponder the lessons learned from loss and destruction. Perhaps we could contemplate what was taught to the suicide bombers as children or what they learned about a distant enemy. Maybe the lesson of 911 is less about a beautiful day in September that shattered lives and exploded the dream of a safe world, and more about where we start to heal this great wound on the soul of humanity. Clearly, we cannot do it with fear; indifference and hatred for it will fester and destroy any hope of a peaceful future for our children. Instead, let us try to know each other better by understanding each other s pain as if it were our own. Let s own the moment when hatred took aim at immovable objects and rendered us captives to this violent memory; then, create a new story where we listen to what others are trying to say and feel compassion for ourselves as we consider a fresh start built on the ashes and bones of history s many lessons. My husband and I attended the Peace Lantern Festival in Long Island City just days after this year s recognition of 911. We heard interfaith prayers for peace; saw people of many nations gathered with their children on their lap or within arms reach. Still others who were not participating in the event played, and enjoyed the sun while creating a landscape full of joy and delight. Such things as these spark my imagination to hope for a better world where we teach our children to grow from love and not hate. Coincidentally, while preparing for a presentation today, I came across this quote from the former poet laureate of Vermont, Robert Frost, which beautifully summarizes the sentiment that I have endeavored to express: My object in living is to unite My avocation and my vocation As my two eyes make one in sight. Only where love and need are one And work is play for mortal stakes, Is the deed ever really done For Heaven and the future s sakes.

SUMMONS AND COMPLAINT You are in danger of losing your home. If you fail to respond to the Summons and Complaint in this foreclosure action, you may lose your home. Please read the Summons and Complaint carefully. You should immediately contact an attorney or your local legal aid office to obtain advice on how to protect yourself. SOURCES OF INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE The State encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid, there are government agencies, and non-profit organizations that you may contact for information about possible options, including trying to work with your lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-free helpline maintained by New York State Department of Financial Services at or visit the Department s website at FORECLOSURE RESCUE SCAMS Be careful of people who approach you with offers to save your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner s distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services.
