1 PERSONAL PARTICULARS Full Name : Dr. V.J. Varghese EDUCATION Ph.D (History) University of Hyderabad M.A. (History) University of Calicut B.A. (History) University of Calicut PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE March 2014 Current Assistant Professor, Department of History, University of Hyderabad July - March 2014 Assistant Professor, Centre for South and Central Asian Studies (CSCAS), Central University of Punjab, Bathinda, India. July - March Assistant Professor, Centre for Development Studies (CDS), Trivandrum, Kerala, India. June February 2000 Lecturer in History in Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady, Kerala, India. SHORT BIOGRAPHY Dr. Vekkal John Varghese currently teaches History at the University of Hyderabad, India. He received his BA and MA in History from the Calicut University and PhD in History from the University of Hyderabad. His areas of interest include modern South Asian history, transnational migrations from South Asia and making of regional modernities in South Asia, with a focus on Kerala in South India and Punjab in North India. His doctoral research was on peasant migrations in South India for cultivation and agricultural expansion, which looks at the ways in which regional economic modernities are formed as translations in South Asia by drawing seemingly different orientations together and by engendering new discourses of development. His more recent works are on transnational migrations from India with special reference to the institution of emigration governance, the question of social stigma, quasi citizenship and politics of mobility involved in the unskilled women emigrations and the production of transnational spaces and their ambivalences. He will be a finalising a few chapters of his forthcoming book out of the doctoral research during the visiting tenure at Asia Research Institute.
