She has a background in Sociology, Social Anthropology and Public Policy from Boston College, Harvard University and New York University. Her research interests are on migration, development and underdevelopment, social movements and civil society, and comparative transitions between Southeast Asia and the Middle East. She has recently published a book on The State and the Advocate: Development Policy in Southeast Asia (Routledge UK 2014). An earlier book Scripted Clashes: A Dramaturgical Approach to Philippine Uprisings (DM Verlag 2009) emphasizes the quasi-festival and quasi-religious character of Philippine revolts. At ARI, she will be writing a monograph on Comparative Political Transitions in Southeast Asia and the Middle East (Palgrave Macmillan) and completing a book chapter on Arab Migrations to pre-colonial Philippines.
