Pre and Post Congress Symposia are also scheduled. The Local Organizing Committee is co-ordinating optional tours. Complete information will be forthcoming. A wide variety of hotel accommodations will be available for Congress delegates at various, special rates to fit every budget. 4 International Society for Digestive Surgery Executive Committee Meeting Sunday, November 14, 1999, Rome, Italy Summary The Executive Committee of the International Society for Digestive Surgery met, with the President, Eduard H. Farthmann, MD presiding, following the ISDS Postgraduate Course, which was conducted in collaboration with European Digestive Surgery (EDS), entitled Preventing Recurrence of GI Cancer. The abstracts are published in this issue. The Committee received a report from Mr. Peter Roth, representative of the Publisher, Karger, on the activities of Digestive Surgery. In reviewing the report, Mr. Roth noted that Digestive Surgery had received an impact factor of and reiterated the number of abstracted/index services to which Digestive Surgery belongs. Mr. Roth noted that Digestive Surgery would be entertaining the possibility of other Surgical Societies joining the ISDS and the EDS with naming Digestive Surgery as the Society s official Journal. It was agreed that Karger, the Publisher, would collaborate with the ISDS Executive Committee before making a final decision on any new partners in Digestive Surgery. With the completion of the successful ISDS Postgraduate Course at the UEGW, it was noted that Karger intended to publish the proceedings of the Postgraduate Course in some format in a future issue of Digestive Surgery. With respect to the upcoming 17th World Congress of the ISDS in Hamburg, Germany, the Executive Committee agreed that all abstracts accepted for oral and poster presentation for the Congress should be published in Digestive Surgery. It was agreed that the ideal scenario would have the abstracts published in Volume 17, Number 4, July/August 2000 issue of Digestive Surgery, and to have the abstract issue on hand at the Hamburg Congress. Mr. Roth reported that the publishing agreement between the ISDS and Karger had been executed and was in order. The report from Secretary-General, Antonio Basoli, MD, was mainly about the membership situation and suggestions were entertained on how to continue to promote membership in the Society. Announcements and promotions of the Hamburg World Congress 2000 at all National and Regional meetings; suggestions that the ISDS should promote its successful Postgraduate course at the 1999 UEGW; and further initiatives to take advantage of the ISDS web site capabilities were considered, among other initiatives, those which have to be implemented first. The report of the Treasurer-General, Lawrence Y. Cheung, MD showed that the Society had received a successful review by the CPA Firm of Russell Brier of Boston, Mass. for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1999, and that the financial activities of the Society up through October 31, 1999, were in order. Dr. Cheung underlined that membership dues for the Society had not been raised since prior to 1990, and consideration should be given to raising the membership dues and bringing it before the General Assembly in Hamburg in September of 2000 for consideration. The Executive Committee heard from various ISDS delegations including the US Chapter. Dr. Cheung reported that the US Chapter of the ISDS had conducted a formal business meeting in connection with the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress on October 12, 1999, in San Francisco, Calif. Dr. Cheung reported that the Chapter had agreed that effective in the year 2000, the US Chapter would conduct a breakfast session and lecture during the time of the ACS Clinical Congress in October only. Previously, the Chapter had supported such breakfasts at both the ACS Clinical Congress and at Digestive Disease Week in May. ISDS News 111

5 Dr. Basoli reported on the activities of the European Federation. Dr. Farthmann agreed to appoint an ad hoc Committee to be charged with the development of a strategy to invigorate the European Federation. Dr. Wong reported on a May 17, 1999, meeting between the ISDS and the APAGE. Dr. Wong noted that APAGE has been an evolving association, and that commencing in the year 2001, an Annual Asia Pacific Digestive week would be conducted. Drs. Farthmann and Wong reported on the ongoing collaborative efforts between the ISDS and the SSAT. It was noted that the SSAT Board of Directors had voted to invite the ISDS to select a representative to serve on the SSAT Program Committee for a one year term. The Executive Committee appointed Dr. Roger J. Leicester of London, England to serve as the ISDS representative to the SSAT Program Committee. The Executive Committee further agreed that the ISDS would invite the SSAT to identify an SSAT representative to serve on the ISDS Scientific Program Committee in order to provide input for the final program of the World Congress Hamburg 2000, and also to serve on the program planning committee for the World Congress Seattle With respect to planning for the Hamburg 2000 World Congress, Dr. Farthmann noted that representatives of the Local Organizing Committee would be meeting with the ISDS leadership later in the evening as well as later in the week during the UEGW. He also noted that the Scientific Program Committee would be meeting on November 15, 1999, to finalize the list of invited faculty and speakers and to approve the outline of the preliminary program for the Hamburg World Congress. He noted that planning for the Industrial Support and Sponsorship for the World Congress was underway and that planning for the World Congress Seattle 2002 was commencing as well. It was noted that the dates September 18 21, 2002, were being held for the Seattle World Congress. Dr. Wong reported on activities with other societies and organizations, including the International Council of Surgical Gastroenterology (ICSG). Dr. Wong noted that at the October 13, 1999, meeting of the ICSG in San Francisco, Calif., the Council elected a new Chairman, Dr. Hugo Obertop of the IHPBA. He also noted that the Chairman-Elect of the Council was to be Dr. Thomas R. DeMeester of the ISDE. It was reported that the International Gastro Cancer Association (IGCA) was elected as a member of the Council and that the OESO was elected as an associate member of the Council. Dr. Wong reported that ICSG had three of its representatives serving on the OMGE s World Congress of Gastroenterology (WCOG) Scientific Program Committee, and one representative serving on the WCOG Steering Committee. He noted that these ICSG representatives would be meeting with the WCOG Steering Committee and WCOG Scientific Program Committee on November 15 and 16, 1999, to continue the planning process of the Scientific Program WCOG 2002 in Bangkok, Thailand. He noted that the ICSG representatives would be providing all surgical input for the Scientific Program of the WCOG In reviewing the terms of office of members of the Executive Committee as well as members of the International Committee, it was noted that several terms would be expiring on September 8, Dr. Basoli noted that many of the members of both Committees would be eligible for renewal of their terms and that recommendations would be made accordingly. Dr. Wong noted, as Chairman of the Advisory Committee, that his Committee would be preparing a slate of Officers and Executive Committee members for consideration at the time of the World Congress Hamburg In looking to the future of the Society, the Executive Committee agreed to conduct a stand alone meeting that would be designed to consider Strategic Planning and future vision issues of the Society. It was agreed that the Executive Committee would conduct such a retreat at some point later in the Spring or early Summer. The meeting was adjourned in the early evening with an agreement that the next meeting of the Executive Committee would be held Sunday, May 21, 2000, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in San Diego, Calif., in connection with Digestive Disease Week (DDW).
