Students will do various activities using the tener idioms they are learning. 1 class session of 30 minutes New terms: English To be years old. To be hot. To be cold. To be hungry. To be thirsty. To be hurt/sore. To have pain/ache. To be confident. To be afraid. To be in a hurry. To be right. To be lucky. To be sleepy. To feel like (doing something/having something). To have (something to do). I am years old. I feel like. I am afraid of. I have to. I have pain/ache. Vocabulary Spanish Tener años. Tener calor. Tener frio. Tener hambre. Tener sed. Tener dolor de Tener confianza. Tener miedo. Tener prisa. Tener razón. Tener suerte. Tener sueño. Tener ganas de Tener que. Tengo años. Tengo ganas de. Tengo miedo de. Tengo que. Tengo dolor de.
2 FOURTH GRADE, LESSON 19 TENER IDIOMS 2 Materials and Resources (Including Technology, Links, and Attachments) Print out of the Tener idioms flashcard words located at the end of this lesson. Whiteboard and dry erase markers. Learning Plan PREPARATION: 0. Print out the Tener idioms flashcard words located at the end of this lesson. INTRODUCTION OF TENER IDIOMS [15 MINUTES] 1. Welcome the students to Spanish. 2. Begin by telling the students that they will be learning about the Tener idioms today. Explain to them that it is a combination of the infinitive Tener + a noun, which is the English equivalent of To be + an adjective. The Tener Idioms express emotions and states of being. 3. Introduce the students to the new terms by first showing them the flashcard. Read the flashcard in Spanish then have the students repeat the words after you. Now say the English translation and have them repeat after you. Save the following ones for the end and explain to the students that Tener ganas de (To feel like doing something/having something) can be followed by a noun or a verb and Tener que (To have to do something) requires a verb to be added instead of a noun. 4. Go over the flashcards again but this time write each of the tener terms (only in Spanish) on the whiteboard, one at a time as you go over them, pronouncing the Spanish word, then pointing out the literal translation and then the correct English meaning. As an example, explain to the students that the translation of Tener hambre would literally mean To have hunger in Spanish, but we would say in English To be hungry. Go over each of the remaining tener idioms with the class and, if you want, ask for volunteer students to give the literal Spanish translation and the English meaning for each of them. INTRODUCTION OF TENGO [5 MINUTES] 5. Explain to the students that Tener is the infinitive form of the verb and it changes to tengo when used with the personal pronoun for I (Yo). In Spanish the pronoun can be implied and doesn t have to be said every time. For example: To be hungry = Tener hambre. I am hungry. = Yo tengo hambre. = Tengo hambre. 6. Go over each of the flashcard terms this time using tengo instead of tener.
3 FOURTH GRADE, LESSON 19 TENER IDIOMS 3 SENTENCE COMPLETION ACTIVITY [10 MINUTES] 7. Write the following phrases next to its corresponding tener idiom. (Don t write the possible responses that are in parenthesis). Tengo años. (Any number can be appropriate) Tengo ganas de. (jugar futbol, ir al cine, chocolate, comida china) Tengo miedo de. (los perros, la oscuridad) Tengo que. (estudiar, leer, trabajar, hacer la tarea) Tengo dolor de. (cabeza, estómago, dientes) 8. Tell the students they can use any vocabulary they have learned so far in Spanish to fill in the blanks of the phrases. Ask for student volunteers to read the sentence and complete them by filling in the blanks with one or more words. Make any necessary corrections to their pronunciation and the completed sentence. If they cannot come up with something you can suggest from the possible responses above. Continue doing this with the remaining sentences until they have completed all of them. If you still have time, start over again with different volunteers and ask the students to come up with different word(s) to complete the sentences. 9. Say adiós to the students and thank them for participating.
