3 Exercise 2: What s the word? (4-5 minutes) Read the following dialog with your tutor and try to use context clues to fill in the blanks with the most appropriate word. You can find the missing word from the pool of words at the bottom. Ms. Lee went to the immigration office to apply for a visa. Immigration Officer: Good morning, Ms. Lee. How are you today? Ms. Lee: Good morning, Sir. I'm fine. Thank you. Immigration Officer: Good. So today's interview will determine if you will be able to acquire a visa or not. Please answer all the questions honestly. Are you ready for the interview? Ms. Lee: I am, Sir. Immigration Officer: What is your purpose of going abroad? GRAMMAR REVIEW: Topic: Sentence Patterns Compound Complex (5-6 minutes) General Description: The compound-complex sentence is made up of one or more dependent clauses AND two or more independent clauses. An independent clause has a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought. A dependent clause has a subject and a verb but has an incomplete thought. Example: IC DC IC I like Japanese culture, that is why when I graduated from college, I migrated to Japan. Remember: Because the compound-complex sentence expresses two or more thoughts in one sentence, we should punctuate them properly.
