DO NOT mail them to Ssan Leding, President. Chapter Bylaws: Mail yor chapter Bylaws & Standing Rles to Marilyn Staples-Sndt, Organizer. If there are no changes, please write No Change on the front page; SW Gardner Ct. Talatin, OR Sesqicentennial Celebration Committee 100 years ago Oregon State Chapter of P.E.O. was a mch different entity, yet still the same sisterhood - still dedicated to service. From the Oregon Daily Jornal May 23, 1918: Salem, May 23, 1918 Mrs Emma McCaw of Portland was today elected president of Oregon grand Chapter, P.E.O. She scceeds Mrs Jessie Kirk of Springfield, who is presiding over convention. Patriotism is the keynote which rns throgh the seventh annal convention of the Oregon grand chapter. Delegates are here from 15 of the 18 chapters in Oregon. War Orphans Spported Cash contribtions made in the name of P.E.O. total $30,175 while the Oregon chapters are taking care of 11 war orphans. At the session Wednesday afternoon a P.E.O. service flag was nfrled. It has stars representing 17 hsbands, 45 sons and 11 brothers of members. We can only imagine what or sisters will be dedicated to in 2118, bt what we do know is that they will contine to be dedicated to service; whether it will it be in space or an expanded international sisterhood here, we know that we will contine to be a strong, loving sisterhood helping women to achieve ever greater goals. Have yo contribted to the 150 Fnd yet? There is still time. Consider this one more way to help insre that P.E.O. will be alive and thriving in Oregon in Do yo have a 50yr+ member? Encorage her to share memories with the chapter so that new members can get a real sense of yor history. Sesqicentennial Celebration Committee Kathi Yenney, AP yenney@pocketinet.com. Convention of International Chapter (CIC) 2021 Planning for CIC 2021 is moving ahead! We will be pdating everyone at convention with information to share with chapters. 3 Edcation Notes from Vice President Sonia Lamoreax OSC is having a banner year for Oregon State Chapter scholarship applications. The Scholarship Committee has jst completed the evalation of 167 Margerite Scholarship applications (p from 123 in 2017). The committee is crrently evalating 188 Oregon Scholarship applications (p from 165 in 2017). This is approximately a 22% increase in applications in one year. Year over year the applications have increased. Althogh Oregon State Chapter is known to be one of the most benevolent giving state chapters, providing a remarkable nmber of scholarships for Oregon women, the resorces to meet the demand and needs of or applicants have not kept p in lock step. This year the Scholarship Committee is evalating each candidate on financial need, goals set, and the ability to achieve their goals. The evalation process is a formal standardized process, each candidate will be thoghtflly considered. The awards for both the Margerite and the Oregon Scholarship will be finalized in mid-may. The follow p correspondence will go ot the latter part of May. Letters of notification to the candidates will go by US mail. Letters of notification to the sponsoring chapters will go ot by . This year many more applicants have reqested that their names be withheld from pblication. The Scholarship Committee will be pblishing only the sponsoring chapters. The Scholarship Committee thanks the sponsoring chapters for their diligence is sponsoring candidates and completing the applications according to directions. Sponsoring a candidate is an investment in time and emotion for the chapter and the candidate and well worth the relationships that develop and especially is the gift of loving mentorship. Treasrer s Notes from Treasrer Bnny Lewis Now is a great time to celebrate the close of one year and the opening of another. If yo are new: welcome to the job. If yo are retrning: we welcome, yo back!! THANK YOU to each and every one of yo for serving yor chapter. Woopee!! Annal Reports are done!! Bt preparing now for the whole year, will make it easier. Here are a few easy steps that will make completing that report relatively painless. Make a copy of yor Monthly Treasrer s Report for easy reference Reconcile yor bank acconts to bank statements monthly (it s mch easier to fix an error when it is first made rather than months down the road) Don t lmp deposits for different prposes all together; make a separate deposit for each prpose even if they are made at the same time (i.e. a deposit for memorial donations shold be separated from Brag Bag dollars shold be separated from money collected for a social event) Record each deposit and its category don t rely on yor brain to remember two or three months down the road Understand each Receipts and Disbrsements category Look at previos Forms IRS-LC to know what yo will be asked to do next March Keep a rnning list of new initiates and reinstatements throghot the year; again, it s hard to rely on memory, especially distingishing between reinstatements and simple transfers 11 months from now The easiest is to se the acconting program from International. It will make all of yor reports a breeze And finally, contact yor OSC Treasrer if yo have any qestions; she is there to assist I had a qestion dring the recent Area Workshop for the Treasrer abot Ways and Means vs Cost of Goods Sold. Here is the explanation: 3
4 Understanding the Difference Between Operating Expenses (WAYS AND MEANS) and Cost of Goods Sold It might be helpfl to se a simplified example to differentiate between cost of goods sold and operating expenses. If yo pictre a warehose fll of goods, the cost of goods sold incldes all of the money spent to create the goods and bring them to the warehose. For a P.E.O. example: If yor chapter sells nts, that means the cost of prchasing the nts and any expenses yo incr while moving those nts to yor market. The ways and means are operating expenses that represent the other day-to-day expenses necessary to keep the chapter rnning. When yo do yor bdget or fill ot yor IRS-LC, then each is broken ot. Also, yo can take the expenses of yor cost of goods sold from the monies collected. The profit is then what yo donate to the projects. Operating expenses for the chapter shold be covered by the des of the chapter. If yor chapter cannot cover their expenses, they may do internal fnd raising sch as loose change collection. The important isse is not to mix yor day to day operating expenses with yor fnd raising for projects. Give me a call if yo have frther qestions, Membership Notes from Organizer Marilyn Staples-Sndt Try Something New It s now time to decide which Something New yor chapter wants to share at or convention in Jne. Make sre yor delegate comes prepared to talk with other sisters abot one new thing yo chapter has tried over the past year. Celebrate yor sccess! And remind yor delegate to have paper and pencil handy to write down the many wonderfl ideas she will see and hear abot from other chapter delegates. Their sccesses cold be yors as well. Photo of Yor Chapter Having Fn Bring one photo, no larger than 5 x 7, to convention to add to or display of Chapters Having Fn. Write yor chapter letters and a short phrase abot what the fn was. Area Workshop Wrap-Up It was wonderfl to have so many chapter sisters participate in or Area Workshops this year. For those of yo who participated, have yo completed or short 12 qestion srvey on Srvey Monkey? If not, please take jst a cople mintes to do so. Yor feedback will help s better meet yor needs and ensre that yor time invested in attending Area Workshops is well spent in the ftre. Membership Growth Responsibility of all chapter members Sponsors know the prospective member well Members vote on faith Extend the invitation Pre-acceptance conseling Post-initiation conseling Assign mentor (President s notes from Area Workshop) 4
5 Nominating Committee Slate of Officers The following nominees will be presented for election at the 2018 Convention: President, Sonia Lamoreax; Vice President, Marilyn Staples-Sndt; Organizer, Bnny Lewis; Treasrer; Lora Heli; Secretary, Carol Hngerford. A complete bio for Carol Hngerford will be posted nder Commnications/What s New on the Oregon website and be inclded in the convention program. *************************************** ~ It has been or pleasre to serve Oregon State as yor exective board in ~ Left to right: Lora, Sonia, Ssan, Marilyn, Bnny OSC Exective Board Bontifl Gifts Woven with Ribbons of Friendship 5
