1 CLUB NEWS Newsletter Date Hewlett-ackard Compay Patrick Eakes District Governor ROTARY DISTRICT 7690 Light Up Rotary Patrick Eakes, 20 Stage Coach Trail, Greensboro, NC 2709 October is Vocational Service month in Rotary. This avenue of service sometimes receives less attention than other service avenues, but celebrating the diversity of professions in our clubs, and the ethical practice of those professions, is at the heart of what we are all about in Rotary. There are a number of ways to promote Vocational Service. Your club can recognize a club member for living by the Four-Way Test in his/her professional life. Even better, your club can honor a community leader who conducts his/her business ethically. Many clubs provide time at their regular meetings for members to present Vocational Talks, giving details of their professional work OCTOBER 201 DISTRICT GOVERNOR S NEWSLETTER and how they apply the Four-Way Test daily. The way your club engages in Vocational Service is your choice. However, I encourage your club not to take advantage of the opportunity to celebrate those who choose the ethical path in their business dealings. ********************** You don t want to miss Growing Your Business Enriching Your Life, our district s signature event in support of polio eradication. Sandler Training sponsors produce this event, providing incredible sales or leadership training at a fraction of what we would normally pay. Even better, a large portion of your registration fee goes directly to Rotary s polio fund, and you and your club get the donation credit. You can find more details in the flyer in this newsletter. Click on content/show/760 to register. ********************** Please be sure to see the information about our District Rotary Foundation Banquet on page 3. You don t want to miss the opportunity to hear our keynote speaker, Rotary International President John Germ, share his personal stories from the front lines of the global polio eradication effort. Remember, clubs who sign up early will get preferred seating at the banquet! 4 Open World Program Five Russian leaders participating in the Open World program spent September 13-21, 2013, in Greensboro examining Accountable Governance. This group was nominated by the Baikal-Eco Rotary Club Irkutsk, Russia. Summit Rotary Club hosted the delegation. Managed by the Open World Leadership Center, a support agency of the United States Congress, the Open World program is designed to enhance understanding and capabilities for cooperation between the United States and the countries of Eurasia by developing a network of leaders in the region who have gained significant, firsthand exposure to America s democratic, accountable government and free-market system. The Open World program works to link Members of Congress to Eurasian leaders and is an instrument for Americans engaged in citizen diplomacy. While in Greensboro the delegates explored the state of North Carolina and investigated social and economic drivers that directly influence state/ local government policies and regulations. The visiting delegates were Vladimir Alekseyev, Olga Artemyeva, Sergey Kiselev, Irina Matveyeva, and Artem Zabava. Yekaterina Vodopyan accompanied them as a facilitator. During the stay, the Open World delegation visited some of the most prestigious historical, governmental, and educational institutions in the state of North Carolina. Visits included; Guilford Battlefield Park, North Carolina Capitol Building, North Carolina House of Representatives Chamber, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Government. Homestays allowed the Open World delegates to experience American family life. They also take part in several cultural and community activities, including a visit to Virginia International Raceway, a NASCAR event, as well as an afternoon of swimming and boating on Hyco Lake. The Open World Leadership Center has awarded a grant to Rotary International to administer this and similar exchanges. The Open World Program is a special program available to Rotary clubs in the United States through a grant secured by Rotary International through which Rotary International is able to reimburse Rotary Clubs for many program hosting expenses The Open World Program was originally established as a Library of Congress administered pilot project in 1999 to give emerging Russian leaders firsthand exposure to the American system of democracy through visits to local governments and communities in the United States. The congressionally sponsored program brings emerging leaders from Russia, Ukraine, and other Eurasian countries (Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kirgizstan, Moldova, and Uzbekistan) to the United States in order to give them firsthand exposure to the American system of participatory democracy and free enterprise. The principles of accountability, transparency, and citizen involvement in government are among the concepts emphasized by the Open World Program. The program is administered by the Open World Leadership Center. Rotary International serves as a national host organization, with Rotary clubs serving as local hosts for Open World delegations. The 201 hosting year marks 1th anniversary of Rotary's participation in the Open World Program. Rotary clubs across the United States have hosted about 10 percent of all 23,000 OW participants throughout these years. RI is able to reimburse Rotary clubs for many of their hosting expenses through Open World grants. For more information on the Open World Program please visit the following Web page on Rotary s site: exchange-ideas/clubconnections/rotary-clubs or Rotary staff at OpenWorld@rotary.org. 5 It s About Membership At the September District Fall Seminar in Clemmons, 20 Rotarians from through-out the District shared their passion for Rotary during the Membership breakout. The energy in the room was palpable as each person introduced themselves and talked about why they joined Rotary, their special projects and their ah-ha moment when they went from a RINO (Rotarian In Name Only) to a true Rotarian. As I offered best practices and we shared ideas, I ended with the review of the Simon Sinek Ted Talk, How Great Leaders Inspire Action. Take a moment and find this 20 minute lecture for yourself. You ll learn that when we are trying to attract new members we are usually hung up on talking about the What - that we are 1.2 million members in over 200 countries, the oldest and largest service organization in the world. And then we offer the How that we give of our time, talent and treasure. But what should really be the focus of our recruiting conversation is the Why of Rotary. Just like in our classroom, you will probably bubble with the feeling words, the believe words, the words of emotion. Members say, I m passionate about a project, I love Rotary. Use these feel good words and you won t have to hard sell them about our great organization. You will touch the heart of your listener who will, instead, find it hard to resist. Help them be a proud (that s a feeling word!) owner of Rotary! Cindi Hewitt and Cory Newton, D7690 Membership Co-Chairs Cpr@aol.com COUNCIL ON LEGISLATION September 23, 201 District 7690 Rotarians, As the District 7690 Representative to the 2016 Council on Legislation selected at the D7690 District Conference it is my responsibility along with Alternate Representative Past District Governor Robert Newton to share with you the Council process. The Council on Legislation is a working meeting where one representative from each Rotary district meets every three years to debate and vote on legislation proposed by clubs, districts, the general council of RIBI, the RI Board, and the Council. The Council will tentatively meet 11-1 April 2016 in Chicago, Illinois, USA. The meeting is conducted in English, with simultaneous interpretation in five languages: French Japanese Korean Portuguese Spanish What s New for the 2016 Council? All proposed legislation should be submitted through the 2016 Council Legislation online form found on the Rotary Website, As part of the form, a Word version of the constitutional document with the proposed changes will need to be uploaded. The Word documents can be found on the governance documents page of the Rotary website. Who May Propose Legislation? Clubs, districts, the RI Board, and the general council or conference of RIBI may propose legislation. However, legislation proposed by a club must first be endorsed by the clubs of the district in order to be presented to the Council. When is the Deadline? Legislation from clubs and districts for the 2016 Council must be received by Rotary International on or before December 31, 201. There are no exceptions to this deadline. Legislation received after the deadline will not be considered. The submission must include the following items to be complete: 1) Name of the proposer 2) Confirmation from the district governor that legislation was proposed or endorsed by the district 3) The proposer s statement of purpose and effect ) Word document with the proposed changes How Does My Club Submit Legislation? For a club to propose legislation: 1. The club s board of directors must first submit proposed legislation to the club members for adoption at a regular club meeting. 2. If adopted, the proposal must then be forwarded to the district with a letter signed by the club president and secretary certifying that it has been adopted by the club. 3. The proposal must be endorsed by the club s district at a district conference, at a district resolutions meeting, or through a ballot-by-mail; otherwise it will not be considered by the Council.. Once endorsed, submit the proposal to Rotary through the online form and have the district governor confirm the district s endorsement by December 31, 201. What Are the Types of Legislation? There are two types of legislation: proposed enactments and proposed resolutions. Proposed enactments seek to change RI s constitutional documents (the RI Constitution, RI Bylaws, and the Standard Rotary Club Constitution), while proposed resolutions seek actions by the Council that do not amend the constitutional documents. Questions on the Proposal Process? Please contact me in one of the following ways: charlesallen@rotary7690.org Phone: (C) I am honored to have the privilege to represent District 7690 as a representative to the 2016 Council on Legislation. Yours in Rotary Service, PDG Charles Allen The Piedmont Rotarian

6 Our Rotary Foundation Endowment Fund Become a Bequest Society Member One of the most important gifts a Rotarian can make is an estate gift to Our Rotary Foundation s Endowment Fund. The Endowment Fund exists to ensure that Rotary will be a significant force for good in the world long after current Rotarians are gone. The Endowment Fund allows each of us to continue our impact in perpetuity, since our gifts are held in the Endowment and only earnings on our gifts are spent. When asking a Rotarian to join the Bequest Society with an estate gift commitment of at least $10,000, the Rotarian might say that it is too much trouble to rework his/her will. There are two easy solutions for that potential obstacle. The first possibility is a Letter of Intent that requires only the Rotarian s name and signature, the date, and the amount of the gift. The Rotarian can fill in these four pieces of information in seconds and then provide a copy to his/ her loved ones or attorney to add to estate documents. This is used for Rotarians who have simple estates that typically will be left to a single person. The second possibility is a Will Codicil that requires only slightly more effort. This page serves as an addendum to an existing will that might be more complex, with multiple beneficiaries. All that is required is the same name, signature, date, gift amount, and county of residence, plus a notarization. Many Rotary clubs have notaries in their membership or members who employ notaries, so this should not be an undue burden. Once the Codicil is executed, a copy should be placed with the existing will. These documents found on the landing page of the district website will make it easy for Rotarians to make a truly lasting impact on hundreds of lives. You can also obtain these documents from PDG Bob Newton, our District Endowment Chair. Other ways to fund the bequest are through life insurance, charitable remainder trust, retirement plan (IRA/01(k) or donor advised fund. I hope you will consider joining the Bequest Society. You will be helping to secure the future of Rotary s outstanding educational and humanitarian programs. For more information, please reach out to our Endowment Chair, PDG Bob Newton, at Robert.L.Newton@gmail.com. 6 The Piedmont Rotarian A World of Opportunity for Your Club s Public Image Program! We have many opportunities to raise the visibility of Rotary in our communities and to publicize not only our clubs activities but also Rotary throughout the world. An example of an opportunity to send out a press release, post information and pictures on your website or Facebook, and tweet the good news is World Polio Day on October 2th. One club is doing a Purple Pinkie Day in partnership with area high schools and Interact clubs. A Rotarian who is a polio survivor can write a letter to the editor or op-ed piece. With the instances of polio confined to only three countries now, World Polio Day is a natural for Rotary PR! Take a good look at the RI and district calendars and choose your opportunity to spread the good news about Rotary. Remember, pictures add interest!! Almost two dozen District 7690 Rotarians, including District Governor Patrick Eakes, took advantage of breakout sessions on Social Media held during the recent District Training Workshops to learn more about the power of getting their message out through social media. Lane Jones from Alamance (Burlington) and Chris Estes from Greensboro Airport were the technical gurus. Lane and Chris introduced everyone to Facebook and Twitter. We now have several additional Rotarians in the Twitter-verse! Thanks to Lane and Chris for their time and expertise and the attending Rotarians for their interest in using the new tools to Light Up Rotary! BREAKING NEWS!! Chris Estes sent out this on September 19 about the Facebook post above. Rotary International re-tweeted our post yesterday. Their 300,000 followers saw our picture and message and "rotary7690" is now linked with their posts in the database. We got incredible exposure from this one image and message. I had 1 notifications of favorites or retweets because RI helped us out. This is a perfect example of how social media can expand our influence and resources beyond our physical borders. Rotarians at the September 13 and 18 sessions take their first Facebook selfie.
