4 BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE Joseph Jones was a prominent physician, scientist, and teacher of the 19 th century. He was born in Liberty County, Georgia, September 6, 1833 to Rev. Charles Colcock Jones, a planter and prominent minister to the slaves. Educated by private tutors as a youth, he later obtained a degree in medicine from the University of Pennsylvania. He actively pursued the investigation of history, etiology, pathology, and treatment of Southern diseases prior to the Civil War while teaching chemistry at Savannah Medical College and later at the University of Georgia. At the onset of the war Jones joined the Liberty Independent Troops as a private; he later served as a surgeon, with the rank of major, in the Confederate States Army and was assigned to Surgeon General Samuel P. Moore to conduct medical studies of principal Southern hospitals and military prisons. He presented his findings to Moore in a series of reports. At the end of the war he resumed his career in medical education and in 1868 accepted a position as Professor of Chemistry and Clinical Medicine in the Medical Dept. of the University of Louisiana and visiting physician at Charity Hospital ( ). Additionally, he served as president to the Louisiana State Board of Health, Louisiana State Medical Society (1889), and as surgeon general in the United Confederate Veterans Association ( ). He continued his research in Southern diseases and related topics throughout the postwar period. He married Caroline Smelt Davis of Augusta, Ga. Oct. 26, 1859; they had four children, Samuel Stanhope Davis, Susan Hyrne, Charles Colcock, and Mary Cuthbert. After the death of Caroline, Joseph Jones married Susan Raynor Polk, daughter of Episcopalian bishop and Confederate general Leonidas Polk. Their children were Frances Devereaux, Hamilton Polk, and Laura Maxwell. Mary Cuthbert, daughter from his first marriage, married Julien Trist Bringier, son of Louis Amedee Bringier of Tezuco Plantation, La.
