CALL TO ORDER, INTRODUCTION OF PUBLIC GUESTS The meeting was called to order at 3:32 p.m. and the above-noted guests were welcomed to the Public Meeting of the SAIT Board of Governors. 2. REVIEW AGENDA The agenda was approved as presented with no adjustments or changes. 3. DECLARATION OF CONFLICT OF INTEREST There were no conflicts of interest declared. CONSENT AGENDA That the Board approves the following items within the Consent Agenda: (a) Board of Governors Public Meeting Minutes of March 19, 2013 MOTION: That the Board of Governors approves the Consent Agenda as submitted. Moved: R. Upright Seconded: B. Demosky CARRIED BUSINESS ARISING FROM PAST MINUTES NO BUSINESS ARISING 5. CHAIR S REPORT Before delivering his report, Joe Lougheed asked SAITSA President Tegan Cochrane to provide the history of the White Ribbon Campaign. Prior to the meeting, all Board members were photographed as a group wearing white ribbons to show their support of this initiative. Acting Chair Joe Lougheed reported on the following items: Congratulations to SAIT for being named Canada s Top Research College in Encouraging news was announced by the Hon. Thomas Lukaszuk on November 6 that an additional $50 million had been secured for allocation amongst most publicly funded Campus Alberta institutions this fiscal year to offset enrolment cost pressures. SAIT will receive $3,416,260 as a base addition to its Campus Alberta grant, an approximate 2.62 percent increase. On November 7, on behalf of Board Chair Bill Lingard, Joe Lougheed travelled to Edmonton to attend the Campus Alberta Strategic Directions Committee Meeting (CASDC) and to officially sign SAIT s Letter of Expectation along with the Deputy Premier and Minister of Enterprise and Advanced Education. Upcoming Events: Thanks to everyone who is planning on attending the Constituents Group Reception immediately following the In Camera Board Meeting at 5:30 p.m. this evening. 3 Board member and Faculty Rep Wes Jamieson will be retiring from SAIT January 1, Wes Jamieson s service to the Board was acknowledged. Via conference call, Board Chair Bill Lingard reported that he met with Deputy Premier Thomas Lukaszuk on October 24. Topics of discussion were very much aligned with almost all of SAIT s initiatives; they spoke of transfer credits to SAIT students, funding, additional funding, governance and board succession. The Deputy Premier thanked the Board and management for their understanding when budget cuts were made and managing through that process. Both Bill Lingard and the Deputy Premier attended the Distinguished Alumni Awards event following their meeting. Bill indicated the event was first-rate and top notch, and speaking with Minister Lukaszuk along with some of the attendees at evening s end, they, too, were most impressed. 6. PRESIDENT S REPORT President Ross reported on the following items Wednesday, November 13 President Ross attended a Polytechnics Canada Board meeting in Calgary at the Delta Hotel. On Thursday, November 14, the Polytechnics Canada Applied Research Student Showcase was hosted by SAIT and included a full day of applied research project presentations. Three federal ministers were on campus: the Hon. Jason Kenney, Minister of Employment and Social Development Canada; Michelle Remple, MP Calgary Centre-North and Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, and the Hon. Greg Rickford, Minister of State for Science and Technology and the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario. The Showcase concluded with an Awards Gala at the Four Nines Dining Centre on SAIT campus. SAIT has been named one of Canada s Top 10 Cultures, winning in the Broader Public Sector category along with two other Alberta organizations, the Calgary Stampede and Travel Alberta. There will be an announcement made on November 21 as well publication of the announcement in a special section on the National Post featuring Canada s 10 Most Admired Corporate Cultures of The special section feature will run on Monday, February 3, 2014, the day of the Summit and Awards Gala. Last year, two post-secondary institutions were recognized, Humber College and McGill University. The Open House held in October was the President s first Open House. To see the engagement of the students and the parents was significant. There were two major achievements that spoke to the success of the event: 1) Sixty-five buses (up from 40) Board of Governors Public Meeting November 21, 2013 Page 3 of 5

4 transported students from across Alberta and as far away as Golden, B.C., 2) the number of applications received during the Open House was in the high 5,000 s (up from 3,000). Also noteworthy was the number of faculty and staff that were involved, and witnessing how they spoke of what they were so passionate about was very powerful. Brett Wilson s visit to campus on Wednesday, November 19 was a huge success. The first 500 attendees were given his book Redefining Success Still Making Mistakes. In lieu of payment for the book, Brett encouraged the audience to donate to the I.G. Lewis Student Emergency Fund and that for the next two weeks he would match up to $10,000 in donations. SAIT was also the recipient of the Project Management Institute Southern Alberta Chapter Award, in the category of Professional Development Provider in Project Management. The award was presented to acknowledge projects in the Southern Alberta area that have demonstrated excellence and commitment to the field of Project Management. 7. SAITSA PRESIDENT S REPORT President Tegan Cochrane reported on the following items: The Student Association was involved in many of the events with SAIT, including the Open House and the Distinguished Alumni Awards. Two new initiatives have been undertaken that are quite exciting, the SAITSA Food Bank and the SAITSA Emergency Student Loan Program. The latter of which is an interest free loan of $500, with the only condition that reimbursement be made by the end of the academic year. The SAITSA Student Support Centre opened November 20, 2013 in the Senator Burns Building. SAITSA has recently hosted Financial Awareness week, Mental Health Awareness, and the Clothing Drive. SAITSA operations are doing well with record numbers of customers in the Coffee House and Gateway. 8. GLOBAL EDUCATION NETWORK (GEN) Dr. Gord Nixon, Vice President Academic provide background information on the Global Education Network program prior to presenting a video highlighting exchange students from Box Hill Institute in Australia and the Institute of Technical Education in Singapore. 5 9. ACADEMIC COUNCIL The Chair noted that the Academic Council minutes of May 21, 2013 and October 8, 2013 were included in the meeting package forwarded prior to the meeting.
