1 Power (to the People) Lunch SHEET 1 Call List for December 14, 2017 (Suggestions Prepared by Elizabeth Conner) Just Say No to the GOP Tax Scam! Summary: As you know, this bill is bad for the majority of Americans, and is also opposed by about 76% of citizens according to polls this week. It gives massive tax cuts to corporations and the rich, adds $1.4 trillion to the debt over 10 years (which Republicans will use to demand cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security in 2018), will leave 13 million people without health insurance, and so much more. If implemented, these changes will continue to exacerbate income inequality and deepen the racial wealth divide in our country. The GOP tax bill is not law yet and we need to continue our resistance. The Senate is now in the reconcillition process, where members of both chambers work out the differences between the two bills. There are still at least seven major points of disagreement between the House and Senate versions. The things given to one Senator to get their vote, will lose the votes of others and those may turn into no votes otherwise. And, it must be voted on before the end of the session. The vote will likely take place on December 18 or 19 th. People all over the county are organizing against the bill and we can add our voices! Let s call potentailly swayable Republican Senators & Reps and all California GOP Representatives to tell them to vote against it!! Call: Sen. Feinstein (D-CA): D.C. 3 SHEET 2 Renew Funding of the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) Summary: The Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) is a program that annually insures nearly 9 million children (and, in some states, pregnant women) whose families' incomes are too high to qualify for Medicaid. Congress allowed the federal funding for CHIP to expire on September 30 th.. On December 7th, Congress passed a short-term continuing resolution (CR) to keep the government funded until December 22nd. Meanwhile, HR 3922 passed in the House on November 3. This GOP bill would renew funding for both CHIP and community health centers (CHC), but pay for the programs by cutting 75% of funding ($6.35 billion) for the ACA's Prevention and Public Health Fund. The bill will also fund CHIP by reducing others health insurance access. The bill is now being considered in the Senate, which already has its own bipartisan version of a bill to reauthorize CHIP and CHCs which does not include offsets. 4 Protect the Dreamers: Pass a Clean Dream Act of 2017 Summary: Late last week, Congress passed the Continuing Resolution (CR) today so the government will stay open for two more weeks while negotiations over the budget are held. Rep. Pelosi and Sen. Schummer brought up the Dream Act, but nothing was agreed to and the CR passed in both houses this afternoon. In September, Donald Trump announced the termination of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which provided a path to citizenship to approximately 800,000 Dreamers. Now, nearly a thousand Dreamers lose their protections every week. With the clock running out, it s time for Congress to take action. A clean Dream Act means one without Trump s amendments, such as increased border patrols and money for the wall. [Note: legislators know what this term means.] Senators Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Dick Durbin, and Cory Booker have already committed to do stand up for the Dream Act. Let s call on Senator Feinstein, Congressman Huffman and other Democrats step up for the Dreamers and vote on the Dream Act, H.R. 3440/S. 1615, before recess! Call: Sen. 5 Support S 1735, the Special Counsel Independence Protection Act SHEET 3 Summary: In early December, Trump (or his lawyer as was later claimed) tweeted what seemed like an admission of his intent to obstruct justice when he fired CIA Director James Comey. Trump's same lawyer later suggested that the president cannot obstruct justice as "the chief law enforcement officer" and "has every right to express his view of any case". Our government is lead by a President who may willfully choose to violate the constitution. With his lawyer publicly suggesting that Trump is above the law, the threat that he'll fire Mueller is real. Special Counsel Robert Mueller and his team have now issued the first indictments in their investigation of Russia's 2016 electoral interference. In Congress, Republicans have been murmuring about winding down their own investigations of Russian collusion by the end of We need to let them and Trump know they will face consequences, legally or politically, for any attempts to impede Mueller's investigation. S 1735, the Special Counsel Independence Protection Act, co-sponsored by Sens. Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC), would create a three-judge panel to review the firing, by a president, of any special counsel who is investigating that president or his team. The bill was heard in the Senate Judiciary Committee on October 26 but no vote was taken. As Mueller's team pursues their investigation, and the Republicans and Trump are issuing threats, now is a good time to call members of this committee to let them know we expect them to allow the legal process to proceed to its conclusion, and that they will face consequences from the electorate if they don t. [Note: Bill co-sponsor Sen. Graham is on the Judiciary Committee, as is Sen. Feinstein.] Call: Sen. Feinstein: S F Office: (415) ; LA Office: (310) ; San Diego: (619) Call: Sen. Harris: D.C. Office: (202) ; LA Office: (213) ; Sacramento: (916) A suggested script for Senators Feinstein and Harris: Hi, my name is a constituent from (city, zip). I'm calling to urge Senator to support S.1735, the Special Counsel Independence Protection Act, and make a public statement that the firing of Special Counsel Mueller by Trump would be completely unacceptable. Can you tell me what Sen. is doing to prevent such an event which would send our democracy into a tailspin? Thank you for taking my message. Call: Republicans (other than Graham) on the Senate Judiciary Committee: [Dial *67] Senator Chuck Grassley (R IA), Chair, DC: (202) ; Des Moines: (515) Senator Orrin G. Hatch (R-UT) DC: (202) ; Salt Lake City: (801) Senator John Cornyn (R TX) DC: ; Dallas (972) Senator Michael S. Lee (R UT) DC: ; Salt Lake City: (801) Senator Ted Cruz (R TX) DC: (202) ; Dallas: (214) Senator Ben Sasse (R NE) DC: (202) ; Lincoln: (402) Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ) DC: (202) ; Phoenix: (602) ; Tucson: (520) Senator Mike Crapo, (R-ID) DC: (202) ; Boise: (208) Senator John Kennedy, (R-LA) DC: (202) ; Lafayette: (337) Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) D.C. Office: (202) ; Raleigh: (919) A suggested script for Republican members of Senate Judiciary Committee: Hi, my name is, I'm calling Sen. because he s on the Judiciary Committee and I m concerned about White House statements about firing Special Counsel Robert Mueller. I urge Sen. to support S 1735, the Special Counsel Independence Protection Act, which would require judicial review if a president fires a special counsel investigating him. [It s the duty of Congress to serve as a check on the President and prevent him from sending our democracy into chaos.] Thank you for taking my message. 6 Hold Trump Accountable for His Sexual Misconduct Summary: Last week, 48 Senators called on Senator Al Franken to resign due to the multiple allegations of sexual harassment. Subsequently, Senator Franken stated his intention to resign his seat on December 7 th. Whatever your opinion of this action by these senators, I believe it is now incumbent upon them to hold President Trump to at least the same standard by calling for his resignation, and if he refuses, to call for an Ethics Committee investigation into the allegations. Five Senators have already called for his resignation based on the allegations of sexual abuse by 11 women: Senators Gillibrand, Hirono, Booker, Merkley and Wyden. Let s call the other Democratic Senators and tell then we expect them to take a stand and hold Trump accountable for his sexual misconduct and crimes.
