President Trump has signed into law a bill that permits states to deny Title X Federal Funds to clinics that provide abortion services, even with their own funds. Over four million women rely on Planned Parenthood clinics for preventive health care, including cancer screening, birth control, contraceptive education, and sexually transmitted diseases. Most of these women live in depressed rural areas of the country. The first time a state moves to deny funding to a Planned Parenthood clinic it will probably be challenged in court. Needless to say, these court challenges are very costly. These costs will need to be born at the same time Planned Parenthood will have to back-fill funding for any clinics that are denied Title X funds. If you have some spare money around I m sure Planned Parenthood could put it to good use. Here in California, we are fortunate to have a legislature and governor who are strong supporters of women s health, and where the state funds abortions for low income women. One in eight people in the United States lives in California, and we are one sixth of the U.S. economy. So what we do here reverberates across the nation. 1/6

We also have good local elected officials who are opposing the kinds of heartless cuts that do so much harm to so many people. Recently, Supervisor Ryan Coonerty made a motion at a Board of Supervisors meeting directing the Chair of the Board to write a letter to President Trump and our federal representatives, expressing the Board s opposition to the President s proposed budget and Congress proposed mid-year cuts. Each of us can also write or call our Congressperson and State Senator, asking that they vigorously oppose the proposed budget. At our May 20th program we will hear from Supervisor Coonerty about the county s response to the Trump agenda. On May 17th, former Congressman Sam Farr, Santa Cruz County Supervisor Zach Friend, Adrienne Harris, Special Assistant to President Obama on Economic Policy, and Spencer Critchley, communications consultant, will be on a panel in Monterey discussing the question, Is There Hope for Democracy? They will look at the assaults on our institutions, the free press, the judiciary, and even the integrity of the election itself. The Washington Post recently published an article about people questioning whether we really need democracy. It will be interesting to hear what Congressman Farr has to say. Now that he is no longer in office, he will be free to speak his mind. The meeting will be start at 7pm. There is no charge to attend. The California Democratic Party will hold its annual convention May, in Sacramento. There are a number of DWC members who will be attending. On the first day of the convention there is a lunch meeting for the California Alliance of Democratic Women s Clubs. Supervisor Ryan Coonerty To Talk May 20 About County Response to Trump Budget By Mike Rotkin As each week of his new Presidency unfolds, Donald Trump meets our every expectation with respect to the general incompetence with which he governs;; however, each week brings new surprises with respect to the details of what he intends to actually do on a wide variety of issues. As his so-called skinny budget revealed, he does intend to make major cuts in health care, social services, transportation, housing, and virtually every domestic program that currently receives federal dollars. Even Meals on Wheels, that radical left-wing program (NOT!) that serves homebound seniors and disabled clients hot meals, has not been spared drastic cuts in the Trump Budget. On Saturday morning, May 20, from at the Santa Cruz Police Community Room (155 Center Street, Santa Cruz, CA), former Mayor and current Third District County Supervisor Ryan Coonerty, will talk about how the County of Santa Cruz will respond to the proposed Trump budget cuts. California Counties, including Santa Cruz, depend upon federal funding for many of the programs they provide to the local community. Public Transit and transportation in general, affordable housing, homeless programs, food stamps and other support for low-income people, veterans programs, clean air and water and other environmental programs, senior meals, childcare and child support, health care, counseling, job training, and a list of human service programs too long to include here are all 3/6

4 human service programs too long to include here are all facing drastic cuts in federal funding under the Trump Administration proposals. Sometimes these funds come directly from the federal government and sometimes they are passed through state or regional agencies;; however President Trump is proposing to cut in all of these areas. At least so far, there is no evidence that the Republican-controlled Congress has the will to prevent any of Trump s plans, although Democrats and some Republicans may change their position once they begin to hear constituent concerns about these programs as they did with respect to the proposed overturn of the Affordable Care Act (Obama Care). Unfortunately, federal funding is often a major percentage of the funding going into all of these programs and unless the County of Santa Cruz can come up with a strategy for replacing at least part of the federal funding, thousands of local residents will face immediate and extreme hardship as funding for programs on which they depend is withdrawn by Trump and the Congress. Supervisor Coonerty will share some of the advanced planning that the County has been doing with respect to how they will fill the holes the Trump cutbacks will leave in their budget this year. The talk will be free and open to the public and Supervisor Ryan Coonerty will respond to questions from the audience.
