North Carolina s Important Symbols and Landmarks

NC s Important Symbols Every state in our country has it s own list of symbols that are unique to that state. These can range from the flag to an official state bird. These symbols are important because: They are unique to each particular state They represent the state or region They are chosen by the citizens and lawmakers of each state They symbolize the unique history and independence of each state North Carolina has many different symbols. Here are a few of the major ones.

The State Flag The flag was commissioned and created on June 22, 1861 The first date represents the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence The second date represents the day that NC seceded from the union prior to the Civil War

The Official State Bird: The Cardinal Known in the state as the winter red bird. Chosen because it is indigenous to North Carolina, and is the only brightly colored bird that resides in the state year round. Chosen in 1943

The Official State Gem/Mineral : The Emerald The General Assembly of 1973 designated the emerald as the official State Precious Stone A greater variety of minerals, more than 300, have been found in North Carolina than in any other state. An emerald crystal weighing 1869 carats, thought to be the largest ever found in North America, was unearthed in late 2003 at a mine in Hiddenite, near Statesville.

The Official State Mammal : The Grey Squirrel Was chosen in 1965 Bill was brought to the assembly after a vote by school children to choose a favorite. First described in 1788, the squirrel contributed in its own small way to the survival of the North American colonies and the success of the Revolution. As an abundant game animal it provided a much needed food source, and some early chronicles suggested that the marksmanship necessary to successfully hunt such an elusive animal was a vital training ground for the citizen-soldiers who fought in the American Revolution and the War of 1812.

NC s Important Landmarks Landmarks are places of special historical significance to each state. Every state has it s own unique landmarks. Landmarks include, but are not limited to: State Capitol buildings (or other government structures) Historical sites or buildings (places where important events occurred) Battlefields from prior conflicts (preserved in remembrance of our state s and nation's history)

Reed Gold Mine Reed Gold Mine is the site of the first documented gold find in the United States. The estimated value of gold recovered reached over one million dollars a year. Located 30 min outside of Charlotte, NC

The Bentonville Battlefield The largest Civil War battle fought in North Carolina Was the only significant attempt to defeat Gen. William T. Sherman during his march through the Carolinas. Located in Four Oaks, NC

The USS North Carolina Moored in Wilmington, NC Was part of the US Naval Fleet in the Pacific theatre during World War 2 Now a museum and shrine to the men that served on her during the war.

The James K. Polk Memorial Located in Pineville, NC (Just outside of Charlotte, NC) This site is located on land once owned by the parents of James K. Polk, the 11th U.S. president. The site commemorates significant events in the Polk administration.

The State Capitol Located in Raleigh, NC The North Carolina State Capitol was completed in 1840 Is still considered one of the best preserved civic buildings in the United States
