1 IAFS Spring Business Meeting Minutes Alumni Center Ball State University Muncie, IN March 16 th, 2015 Call To Order The meeting was called to order at 11:04 am by Mark Pyron. Establish Quorum The secretary confirmed that there was a quorum to conduct business. There were 14 members in attendance. Agenda Editions/Deletions New Members/Guests Jessica Merkling, a Fisheries Aide with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources introduced herself. Secretary s Report. The Fall 2014 Business Meeting Minutes were posted on the IAFS website. No comments were received on the website or during the Spring Meeting. A motion was made and approved to accept the report as written. Treasurer s Report The treasurer s report was passed out and Daniel Arndt briefly explained the report. See Attachment 1 for the report. A summary of income and disbursements since the Fall Meeting were summarized along with account balance totals. The status of the seed money for the next MW Fish and Wildlife Conference to be held in Indiana was discussed. Since IAFS has not received any seed money at this point, the issue will likely be brought up again at the Fall Meeting. There was a motion to accept the report, seconded, and approved as written. Committee Reports Standing Committees Awards Sandy Clark-Kolaks urged those in attendance to nominate people for awards that will be distributed at the Fall Meeting. Programs Membership Tom Bacula stated he there were 17 paid members in attendance. This total was likely not representative of the true total, as those who paid their dues through National AFS were not reflected in the total due to a lack of communication from National AFS. Nominations
2 Sandy Clark-Kolaks nominated Stephen Jacquemin and Benjamin Miller as candidates for Vice President. Daniel Arndt was nominated for Secretary-Treasurer. All 3 candidates gave short biographies of themselves. Resolutions Sandy Clark-Kolaks proposed writing resolution regarding a bill banning microbeads (plastics). Jason Doll proposed the potential of writing a resolution opposing the Mounds Reservoir project. Tom Lauer gave an update on the issue and volunteered to follow the issue going forward. A decision to write a resolution will be made once a final project proposal is released. Communications Jason Doll stated that a Newsletter Editor is needed. Jason reminded those in attendance to send him items if they would like them posted to the website. He would also coordinate with the Newsletter Editor to develop an electronic letter. Drew Holloway gave an update on the IAFS Facebook page. Ad hoc Committees Audit Daniel Arndt stated Bryan Kalb, who previously expressed interest in fulfilling this position, was no longer interested and didn t see a need for this committee. Continuing Education Steve Andrews gave a summary of the Electrofishing Workshop held at the Fall Meeting. He said he had some ideas for the next Continuing Education Workshop that involved aquatic vegetation or Army Corp of Engineers. He stated he is open to other ideas. Sandy Clark-Kolaks stated Brant Fisher would be willing to give a Minnow Identification course at the 2016 Fall Meeting or later. Certification Legislative Communications Sandy Clark-Kolaks gave an update on Indiana Legislative Day that is occurring on March 24, History and Archives Outreach Technical Committees Rivers and Streams Steve Jacquemin stated that the annual Rivers and Streams Report is available online and the Rivers and Streams Technical Meeting is happening on March 31, 2015 in Illinois. The theme will be 100 years of stream ecology and registration is $40. Centrarchid
3 Dave Kittaka stated the Centrarchid Summer Meeting will be a joint meeting with the Walleye Committee. Esocid Dave Kittaka attended the 2015 MW Fish and Wildlife Conference and attended the Esocid Technical Meeting. He said the meeting was well attended and lots of good discussion occurred. Dave also attended the Esocid Committee Technical Summer Meeting in The minutes from that meeting are attached ( Attachment 2). He stated there is an International Musky Symposium in Minnetonka Minnesota occurring March in 2016 (Attachment 2). The summer meeting for the Esocid Committee will be in Brookings South Dakota July 20-24, Walleye Dave Kittaka stated the summer 2016 meeting for the Walleye Committee will occur in Chicago near the Shedd Aquarium. Jason Doll stated the last Walleye Committee meeting was not well attended. Ictalurid Student Subunit Reports Ball State Tom Lauer stated that 10 BSU students attended MW Fish and Wildlife Conference. There would a fish taste test at the sub-unit meeting occurring that day. The subunit has a river cleanup event planned. Purdue Jay Beugly reported that the sub-unit was hosting a fundraising event called the Sturgeon Spawning Run on April 25, The sub-unit is completing a reservoir assessment, coordinating a camping trip, and an event with the BSU and Manchester sub-unit. Manchester Unfinished Business 2015 MW Fish and Wildlife Conference Raffle Tom Bacula gave a summary on the raffle IAFS held at the MW Fish and Wildlife Conference. All the Indiana Gaming Commission documentation has been submitted. The raffle generated a profit. The best performing items were the Yetti Cooler, two fly rods, and fishing tackle bag. Tom generated a summary report to guide future members who perform raffles at similar events. Tom then gave away some remaining items at no charge to those in attendance.
4 New Business Student Sub-unit Dues Daniel Arndt gave a brief synopsis of the current procedure regarding students in approved sub-units that want to pay dues to the State Chapter. Daniel Arndt proposed that this procedure be revised to where students who want to become Chapter members should pay their dues directly to the State Chapter. Tom Lauer proposed that State Chapter membership dues should be eliminated for students. He believes students would not want to have to pay the $5 State Chapter membership fee directly to the State Chapter and that most students don t have the financial resources to afford the membership fee. The students would be encouraged to register as a State Chapter member through the IAFS website. A motion was made and approved to waive the State Chapter membership fee for all students. Changes to the procedures manual will be discussed at the Fall Meeting. MW Fish and Wildlife Conference Raffle Checking Account Daniel Arndt proposed we should close the checking account for the MW Fish and Wildlife Conference raffle funds once we are able. Tom Bacula stated we should keep the fund open for about a year in the event the Indiana Gaming Commission has any questions/concerns with the raffle that occurred at the MW Fish and Wildlife Conference. AFS Investment Fund Daniel Arndt gave a summary of the AFS Investment Fund available to the State Chapters. He proposed that once the Chapter receives the seed money for the next MW Fish and Wildlife Conference, that they invest it in some type of similar fund and not in CDs. Newsletter Editor Mark Pyron volunteered to fill this committee chair position. Installation of new officers A non-oral vote for Vice President and Secretary-Treasurer occurred during the course of the meeting. Sandy Clark-Kolaks announced that Benjamin Miller was elected as the new Vice President and Daniel Arndt was elected as Secretary- Treasurer. Adjourn No more new business and a motion to adjourn was made and seconded at 12:00 pm.
