The Quill & Bugle Saramana SAR Chapter Newsletter National Society Sons of the American Revolution Thank you for your Service! February 2017 Saramana SAR 2018 Leadership President Steve Fields Vice President Doug Erb Secretary TBD Treasurer Preston Adams Registrar TBD Genealogist TBD Historian Charles Riegle Chaplain John Hartly Past President Dick Mahaffey Quill & Bugle Editor TBD Governor (2019) Tim Milligan Governor (2019) Bill Battles Governor (2019) Bill Segraves Governor (2019) Billy Franklin Governor (2018) John Fitzpatrick Governor (2018) David Purviance Great leaders become great through conscious effort and commitment. George Washington Editor: Steve Fields website: President Steve Fields Message Compatriots, At the regularly scheduled chapter luncheon meeting on 19 January 2018 there were 30 members and guests in attendance. After a fine meal, two Eagle Scouts read their essays in culmination of this year s Knight Essay Contest. 1st place went to Roberto Gonzalez with Michael Meisner the runner-up. Both contestants performed admirably and received scholarship checks from the Saramana SAR Chapter to aid their future college plans. To cap off a great program, Saramana was proud to have Pastor William Hild of the First Baptist Church of Sarasota as guest speaker. His talk on little known facts about the life of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. His talk was so well received that members and guests asked for a Q&A despite the hour I think all would agree that it was educational, entertaining, and a great way to observe the recent national holiday. On 16 February 2017 the Saramana SAR Chapter will celebrate the 287 th birthday of George Washington. So, grab you colonial attire, make your reservation today, and start looking forward to the cherry pie. All DAR and CAR members are cordially invited to attend. Fraternally Steven R. Fields, President

More information can be found here: George Washington Birthday George Washington was officially born on February 11, 1731 (Old Style). At the time, the entire British Empire, including its North American possessions, were on the Julian calendar; the Empire, not being bound to the Catholic Church, had not yet adopted the modern Gregorian calendar that Catholic countries had adopted in Consequently, by the 1730s, the Julian calendar used by Britain and the Colonies was eleven days behind the Gregorian, due to leap year differences. Furthermore, the British civil year began on 25 March rather than 1 January, so that dates in February (such as this one) 'belonged' to the preceding year. (See Dual dating). In 1752, The British Empire switched to the Gregorian calendar; since then, Americans born prior to 1752, including Washington, have typically had their birthdays recognized under what their birthday would have been under the Gregorian calendar ( New Style dates). Since, during the 1700s, February 11 under the Julian calendar would fall as February 22 on the Gregorian, Washington's birthday has been generally recognized as February 22. The federal holiday honoring Washington was originally implemented by an Act of Congress in 1879 for government offices in Washington (20 Stat. 277) and expanded in 1885 to include all federal offices (23 Stat. 516). As the first federal holiday to honor an American president, the holiday was celebrated on Washington's actual birthday, February 22. On January 1, 1971, the federal holiday was shifted to the third Monday in February by the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. This date places it between February 15 and 21, which makes the name "Washington's Birthday" in some sense a misnomer, since it never occurs on Washington's actual birthday, February 22. This year the nation will celebrate the 287 th birthday of George Washington and the birthdays of all presidents on the Federal Holiday known as President s Day, which occurs on Monday, 19 February. The Saramana SAR Chapter holds it s luncheon on 16 January in his honor. Your reservation form can be found on page.
The Arthur M. & Berdena King Eagle Scout Award Contest. The Arthur M. & Berdena King Eagle Scout Award Contest is open to all Eagle Scouts who are currently registered in an active unit and have not reached their nineteenth birthday during the year of application. While the preliminary rounds of the contest begin at the local level, Scouts may eventually advance to the state or national levels, eventually held in June during the annual SAR Congress, and awarded up to $10,000. On 19 Jan 2018 at their Luncheon Chapter Meeting, the Saramana SAR honored two Eagle Scouts. Photos and details are below. Eagle Scout Contestants with Family Members Eagle Roberto Gonzalez with mom. Eagle Michael Meisner with dad. Eagle Roberto Gonzalez (1 st Place); Eagle Michael Meisner (2 nd Place). Eagle Compatriot and Eagle Scout Award Contest Committee Chairman Blair A. McVety presided over the ceremony. Judge Gilbert Smith (not shown) coordinated applications and judging.; and Part of the application rules require each competing Eagle Scout to complete a Four Generation Ancestor Chart and a Patriot Theme. Eagle Roberto Gonzalez s theme is presented below. John Adams SAR Essay by Eagle Roberto Gonzales Unlike most wars before it or since, the American Revolutionary War was a war of ideas and words before it became a war of guns. Most people wouldn t rate John Adams as one of America s most effective Presidents, however, he did play a major role in many events leading up to and finalizing the American Revolution, particularly related to American Revolutionary ideas and words. John Adams and his cousin, Samuel, were leaders of the New England delegation in the First Continental Congress. Adams touched history in many key events and decisions that shaped our country s early founding. One of Adams first accomplishments was to convince the Congress to condemn the Intolerable Acts as unconstitutional. He supported the Declaration of Rights, to tell King George that Americans believed they were entitled to the immutable laws of nature, the principles of the English constitution, and the several charters or compacts, including the right to life, liberty, and property. Also, as a member of the Continental Congress, John Adams also played a major role in identifying Colonel George Washington to be the Commanding Officer of our Revolutionary troops. Again, John Adams was active, as a delegate from Massachusetts, in passing the Declaration of Independence. On June 7, 1776, Adams seconded the motion made by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia that the United States are, and of right ought to be, free and independent states. Adams was present during a peace conference called by Britain s Admiral Lord Howe. Adams, along with Benjamin Franklin and Edmund Rutledge met with Howe on September 11, This peace conference failed, as one of Howe s requirements was that the colonies retract their declaration of independence. John Adams was also present with Benjamin Franklin, John Jay, and Henry Laurens in Paris to begin negotiations of the Articles of Peace, which would be ratified by the Constitutional
Congress in April These negotiations led to the United States being recognized and a country in its own right. After the Revolutionary War was won, John Adams would go on to be Washington s Vice President for two terms, and then hold the office of President for one term himself. In 1818, when Adams reflected back on his life he said: The Revolution was effected before the war commenced. The Revolution was in the minds and hearts of the people. John Adams touched many key events of the American Revolution beyond those previously mentioned, from the Boston Massacre to the Boston Tea Party. Finally, when John Adams died, two great historical coincidences occurred. First, he passed away on July 4, 1826, the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and second he shared his last day on earth with another American Revolutionary, Thomas Jefferson. Rachel Mallet places 3 rd in Florida SAR Society Joseph S Rumbaugh Oration Contest Luncheon Memories 19 January 2018 The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) invites all high school students (9th through 12th grades) interested in the American Revolution to participate in the George S. & Stella M. Knight Essay Contest. The contest is open to all students attending home schools, public, parochial, or private high schools in that same grade range. Each student s five- to six-minute speech (and accompanying manuscript) will be judged based upon its composition, delivery, significance, and historical accuracy and relevance. While the preliminary rounds of the contest begin at the local level, students may eventually advance to the state or national levels, eventually held in June during the annual SAR Congress.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day guest speaker Pastor William Hild Not all of the principles of America s founding were realized at once. Struggles to attain for all the rights enshrined in the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights continued for decades after their adoption. From the dismantling of slavery, to suffragette the efforts, and later the civil rights movement, American citizens have worked, struggled, and sacrificed to ensure the equal treatment of all under the law. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was one who found in his faith the strength work to overcome generations of injustice despite the odds. For the past two decades, Pastor William Hild, Jr. has given leadership as Lead Pastor of First Sarasota, the Downtown Baptist Church. Arriving in Sarasota during the summer of 1997, Pastor Bill has overseen a historic and significant enlargement of the church congregation, local ministries, staff, international missions and the physical campus. Because of his father s military career, Pastor Bill grew up traveling to many parts of the U.S. and internationally, including a three year experience in Okinawa, Japan as a teenager. He says that relocating so much, attending fourteen different schools by the time he graduated from High School, helped him gain a great respect for people of various backgrounds, ethnicities and experiences. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Religion at Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, Tennessee and then a Master s of Divinity from Southeastern Baptist Theology Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina. As part of his graduate work, he became one of the leading scholars of the era on the life and writings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In recognition of his service to the Sarasota area as both educator and faith leader, the Saramana SAR Chapter was honored to recognize him with the presentation of the SAR Bronze Good Citizenship Medal.
