1 St. Augustine Chapter Sons of the American Revolution Newsletter for March 2013 AFTER THE PEACE The Peace of Paris (1783) was the set of treaties which ended the American Revolutionary War. On 3 September 1783, representatives of King George III of Great Britain signed a treaty in Paris with representatives of the United States of America commonly known as the Treaty of Paris (1783) and two treaties at Versailles with representatives of King Louis XVI of France and King Charles III of Spain commonly known as the Treaties of Versailles (1783). The British lost their Thirteen Colonies and the defeat marked the end of the First British Empire. The United States gained more than it expected, thanks to the award of western territory. The other Allies had mixed-to-poor results. France won a propaganda victory over Britain after its defeat in the Seven Years War, however its material gains were minimal and its financial losses huge. The Dutch did not gain anything of significance and the Spanish had mixed result; they did not achieve their primary war goal of recovering Gibraltar, but they did gain some territory. However in the long run, as the case of Florida shows, the new territory was of little or no value. Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and John Jay remained in Europe negotiating various commercial treaties to be joined in 1784 by Thomas
Jefferson. In the brief interlude between peace being declared and the problems of developing a new nation arising, Franklin wrote several articles that were published in the European press. In one essay, published in early 1784, Franklin noted, or rather reiterated, a familiar theme: In America, no political office should be so profitable as to make it desirable. He wrote further that the virtue of this new nation was in its sobriety, frugality and industry. America was, he reported, a fertile, rich, wide open nation with abundant employment, as well as unprecedented religious, social and commercial liberty. She made poor immigrants wealthy but, contrary to myth, her streets were not paved with loaves (or gold), her houses tiled with pancakes and the fowls in the yard did not cry come eat me. In this essay, Information to Those Who Would Remove to America, Franklin wrote the best one-line definition of the struggling new nation noting that a useful man was always welcome in the New World, where no stigma was attached to manual labor. This ode to the middle class, as it is often described, was followed within the month by a further condemnation of inherited privileges and blasted the creation of the Society of Cincinnati. Franklin was firm in his position that distinction was not transferable. Settling honors on heirs, he wrote, is apt to make them proud, disdaining to be employed in useful arts and thence falling into poverty, and all the meanness, servility and wretchedness attending it; which is the present case with much of what is called the noblesse in Europe. And while Franklin constantly marveled at and commented on the human capacity for deception, he trumpeted the values of transparency, accountability and healthy disbelief noting that a Frenchman always replies as though he knows very well what you ask...[yet] is frequently forced to admit that he is ignorant of the most important, if not all, details. Much like Falstaff in Shakespeare s first six Henry plays, Franklin displays that American scrappiness and improvisational genius that created this land of opportunity and gave it its pluralistic quality. In this world, Franklin wrote in his final essay in 1790, it is not faith that saves us, but defiance. 2
CHAPTER NEWS New members inducted into SAR: Compatriots David Freeman and Clayton Tinny were inducted into the Society during the March meeting. Past Chapter and State President John Tinny performed the ceremony and presented both new Compatriots with their membership certificates and approved genealogies. He then pinned the SAR rosette on Clayton Tinny s shirt. Compatriot William Roberts pinned the SAR rosette on Compatriot Freeman s shirt. Compatriot Freeman is a Regular Member of the SAR. Regular Members are those age 18 years or over. They meet all requirements for membership as defined in the SAR s Constitution and in the Bylaws of the National Society. They may vote, hold office at the local, state and national level, serve on committees and participate in SAR governance. They receive The SAR Magazine. Compatriot Clayton Tinny is a Junior Member of the SAR. They meet all requirements for membership as defined in the SAR s Constitution and in the Bylaws of the National Society but are under the age of 18. A Junior Member is not permitted to vote, hold office, be a member of a committee or participate in SAR governance. They do not receive The SAR Magazine. A Junior Member pays $10 in National dues. There are no State dues for Junior Members. In addition, a Junior Membership 3
requires $35 for fees and dues at the national level and $15 in state fees for processing. Veteran recognized: Compatriots William Roberts and John Tinny were presented with NSSAR Korean Service Veterans Corps Certificates during the March meeting. To be recognized by the NSSAR for Korean War service, a Compatriot must hold one or more of the following: Korean Service Medal (KSM); Korean Defense Service Medal (KDSM); Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (AFEM); United Nations Service Medal for Korea (UNSM); and/or the Republic of Korea War Service Medal (RKWS). One or more of these medals must be listed on a Compatriots DD214 or in orders. A copy of the Compatriots DD214 and/or the orders authorizing the wearing of the medal must be submitted to the Chapter president along with the completed survey form (next to last page of this newsletter) to be eligible to receive the recognition and certificate. At this point, all Korean War veterans of the St. Augustine Chapter have been recommended to the National Society for this certificate. Compatriot Ralph Crews will receive his certificate in April. Vietnam veteran recognition: The NSSAR plans to recognize all members of the Society who served in Vietnam. To be eligible for this recognition, the veteran must hold the Vietnam Service Medal (VSM), the Vietnam Campaign Ribbon (VCR) or both. If you served in Vietnam, please submit a completed Veterans Battalion Survey form to your Chapter president along with a copy of your DD214 showing the noted medals. The form will be found on the last page of this newsletter. 4
All veterans: If you served in the U.S. military at any time, please complete the Veterans Battalion Survey form on the last page of this newsletter and return it along with a copy of your DD214 to the Chapter president. Flag Certificates: If you are aware of a private citizen, a business, a school, a government agency or any other organization that displays the U.S. flag in the proper manner (lighted at night, for example) and for patriotic purposes, please nominate them to receive the certificate. Nominations should be sent to the Chapter president. Monument dedication: The Gainesville and St. Augustine Chapters of the SAR will dedicate a memorial marker to the memory of Francisco Xavier Sanchez on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. The dedication will take place in the Tomolato Cemetery in St. Augustine. Please attend this dedication as a representative of our chapter. Sanchez is the only documented Spanish citizen of what was then Spanish East Florida who supported the Patriot Cause. He provided food for prisoners held by the British at the Castillo. Three of these prisoners had signed the Declaration of Independence. The guest speaker at the event will be Ron Sanchez, a descendant of Francisco Sanchez and a St. Johns County Commissioner (and potential SAR member).
