2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission The Mount Vernon Ladies' Association mission statement is "to preserve, restore, and manage the estate of George Washington to the highest standards and to educate visitors and people throughout the world about the life and legacies of George Washington, so that his example of character and leadership will continue to inform and inspire future generations." Background The Association was founded in 1853 by Ann Pamela Cunningham of South Carolina to purchase and preserve Mount Vernon as a national shrine. Learning that the Washington family's offer to sell the property to the federal government and the Commonwealth of Virginia had been refused, Miss Cunningham founded the Association and raised $200,000 through a nationwide fundraising effort. In 1858, the Association signed a purchase contract to acquire the Mansion, outbuildings and 200 surrounding acres from John Augustine Washington, III, a great-grandnephew of George Washington. After a transition period, the Association assumed complete control of the property in Since then, Mount Vernon has become a dynamic center for research and interpretation on George Washington. Mount Vernon is the repository for not only innumerable personal possessions and papers of Washington, but also a reliable and valuable source of information on diverse aspects of 18th-century customs and practices. In addition, the estate is one of the best-preserved colonial era plantations remaining in the western hemisphere. Also, in September 2013, Mount Vernon opened The Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington, which serves as the presidential library for Washington. 4 Programs Programs Historic Estate Description ESTATE AND GARDENS: We welcome more than one million visitors each year to the estate and offer them an unforgettable educational and aesthetic experience with a mansion tour, museum, orientation and education centers, and numerous indoor and outdoor exhibits and interpreters. EDUCATION: Education is a primary component of all Mount Vernon programs, whether we are presenting information on George Washington's presidential and military career, his farming and entrepreneurial achievements, or the elements of his childhood that led to the development of a national hero. PRESERVATION, RESTORATION AND COLLECTIONS: Along with education, preserving Mount Vernon is the primary mission of the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association. Since taking possession of the property in 1860, the Ladies have sought to preserve and restore the historic structures and the landscape to their eighteenthcentury appearance, with the Mansion the centerpiece of the Association's restoration efforts. Today, ongoing research and advances in preservation technology continue to guide our efforts to restore the house to its appearance during Washington's life. Budget $22,075, Long term Success In addition to welcoming more than one million visitors to Washington's home, we opened the new Ford Orientation Center and Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center, providing an enormous array of offerings for adults and children that have increased dramatically the amount of time visitors spend at Mount Vernon and the amount they learn about George Washington while here.
