2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission Statement The Irish International Immigrant Center assists immigrants from Ireland and from around the world as they integrate into American society, and with partner organizations, promotes reconciliation in Ireland. We are a vibrant, welcome center that provides legal, wellness and education services, advocates for systemic change, and facilitates cross-cultural community building. Background Statement In 1989, a group of volunteers came together to support Irish immigrants as they made the journey to the United States. Their efforts lead to the foundation of the Irish International Immigrant Center whose philosophy of inclusion now supports over 3,1 individuals from 12 countries each year. At the IIIC, we empower immigrants to be socially responsible, civically engaged and fully integrated into their new communities. Our goal is to ensure that all people are given respect, dignity and equal opportunities and protections. Our work would not be possible without the support of pro-bono attorneys, teachers, nurses and other skilled volunteers. Our Immigration Legal Services offer individuals expert legal advice about immigration and citizenship at nominal costs which are waived for any client who is unable able to afford the fee. Our English for Speakers of Other Languages classes offer students the skills that are critical to entering and advancing in the workforce, helping them create a successful life in the United States. Our Wellness and Education Services offers counseling for a range of health issues including substance abuse disorders and other mental health issues, free health clinics, and education programs designed to develop and improve job skills. Finally, the IIIC specializes in international exchange programs between Ireland (North and South) and the United States which offer young Irish adults job skills, confidence, and the opportunity to experience diversity of cultures that exists in Boston. Our constituents come from regions ranging from Ireland to Brazil, Africa, Haiti, the Caribbean and beyond. Because of the diverse languages our constituents speak, the IIIC has built a multi-lingual staff including Spanish, Haitian Creole, and French speakers and others. The IIIC has an integrated approach that helps us achieve our primary objective of helping individuals and families find a place in their new home and become engaged participants in U.S. society. Today, the IIIC influences immigration policy and provides direct service to individuals in high risk populations each year. Most of our clients are low-income or underserved. They range from refugees who are victims of persecution to long-time residents seeking to become U.S. citizens. Impact Statement IIIC's Immigration Legal Services staff and volunteer attorneys provided free consultation and representation for 2,4 immigrants annually. With one of the few free immigration legal clinics held on a regular basis, need for our center's legal services will become more important for the immigrant community in the coming year. Throughout our history, we have assisted immigrants in preparing for the workforce and have continually expanded the program to serve the needs of our constituents. Our integration services include English for Speakers of Other Languages, Citizenship Education and Career Advancement classes. Because of the increased need for our services, goals include expanding our programs, hiring more staff attorneys and obtaining additional funding. 2
