Mission & Impact Statements To ensure refugees and immigrants achieve their full potential now and for generations to come. Nashville International Center for Empowerment (NICE) is an Ethnic Community Based Organization (ECBO) providing essential social services for refugees and immigrants in Middle Tennessee. It is the only Ethnic Community Based Organization (ECBO) in the state of Tennessee founded and run by a former refugee and whose majority of staff are primarily from refugee and immigrant communities. Creating programs that meet the specific needs expressed by New Americans reflects a commitment to empower clients to become self-sufficient and interdependent members of the community. Since 2005, NICE has worked to realize its vision of integration, empowerment, and civic participation for New Americans by recognizing and equipping New American talent, labor, entrepreneurial spirit, and spending power in Tennessee. Accomplishments in 2017: NICE served 346 immigration clients, resettled 231 refugees, served 323 individuals in health programs, taught 975 students through ELL and PreHSE programs, served 229 youth through after-school and summer programs, and secured stable jobs for 372 employment clients. Goals for 2018: 1) Maintain and increase current revenue steams while being impacted by new federal resettlement policies 2) Continue to diversify funding 3) Strengthen branding to increase awareness in community to increase volunteer and monetary support 4) Build public awareness of NICE programs to enhance advocacy and advance its mission with sustainable growth. 2

Ways to get involved at NICE include: volunteer to contribute to the growth of our programs, provide in-kind donations such as household items for the Resettlement Program, host families to welcome newly arrived refugee families, and monetary gifts. We are always looking for volunteers to join the NICE family; NICE also accepts monetary and in-kind donations. For information on how to make a donation, please see: For more information on donations, volunteer opportunities, and internships, please call our office or check out the volunteer section of our website: Service Categories Primary Organization Category Human Services / Ethnic/Immigrant Services Secondary Organization Category Education / Adult Education Tertiary Organization Category Employment / Employment Preparation & Procurement Areas of Service Areas Served TN - Davidson TN - Rutherford We serve the South Nashville area, Davidson County, and neighboring districts. Our primary focus is in Middle Tennessee. CEO Statement We have been honored to serve Nashville s growing refugee and immigrant community for over a decade as they rebuild their lives in our city. Following a year of enduring uncertainty and challenges to US refugee resettlement, the Nashville International Center for Empowerment (NICE) continues to invest in the future of New Americans in Middle Tennessee. At NICE, we believe our clients trust is the standard by which we measure the impact of our programs. The very foundation of the work we do from southeast Nashville ensures refuge for those fleeing violence and persecution from the earliest stages of resettlement to long term integration. Many New Americans face significant socioeconomic challenges after relocating. By establishing social connectivity, civic participation, reciprocity, and trust, the flagship PEACE and Citizenship Program additions seek to build social capital within the immigrant and refugee community. Our partnership with Peace Ambassadors USA has been instrumental in volunteering their time and resources to this mission. An ongoing partnership with a local nonprofit, Carpenter s Square, accommodates our growing number of students in citizenship classes. By fostering a relationship between New Americans and the Greater Nashville community, we have connected clients to community resources and local government with the essential support from partners at Cross Point Church, Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints in Spring Hill, Nashville Soccer Club, Rasouls Market, Donelson Christian Academy, Community Resource Center, Bed Bath & Beyond, and many 3

more. Immigrant-fueled revitalization is present in all sectors of the Tennessee economy. We strive to stay attuned to the immigrant voices in our midst in order to affect systemic change as Nashville grows and diversifies. Today, NICE works at the intersection of migration, rapid urbanization, and development. Our committed staff hopes to contribute to reducing social inequality and to create a place that is inclusive, safe, and welcoming for all. It is an ambitious goal. However, we continue to gain forward momentum as we build upon our humble beginnings in a small apartment living room where refugee women in Nashville first gathered to learn English. I offer a special thanks to all our funders, individual donors, and more than 200 dedicated volunteers who support our mission. Your confidence in our work creates optimism for future growth. Together, we can improve and expand our services for the next decade. 4

Programs Programs Adult Education Programs: ESL, Citizenship, Pre-High School Equivalency Description NICE offers seven levels of English Language Learner classes with multiple courses offered at a time. Classes are held four days a week. NICE provides free child care during the class. NICE also offer citizenship classes to assist clients in preparing for the naturalization interview. To prepare for the high school equivalency (HSE) class, students may additionally enroll in Pre-HSE classes, which include curriculum for English reading comprehension, writing, critical thinking, and standardized test skills. Category Population Served Education, General/Other Immigrant, Newcomers, Refugees, Adults, Minorities Short Term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success All students are given the CASAS test as a pre- and post-test to measure improvement. To celebrate the progress of adult learners, NICE hosted an Adult Education Celebration, where program participants prepared international food to honor their cultural heritage. One adult English learner gave a speech at this event, demonstrating the hard work and growing confidence of program students. The enthusiasm of Adult Education volunteers and students alike was palpable as another year of growth and personal achievement for adult learners came to a close. 5

Youth Education Description Category Population Served Examples of Program Success The Youth Education program provides academic support to Metro Nashville Public School (MNPS) refugee and immigrant students through after-school and summer programming. All youth programs provide oneon-one homework help through mentors, academic assistance, enrichment activities, college counseling, and English language learning. For the school year, NICE is projected to serve 160 refugee and immigrant students; 30 students at Glencliff High School, 30 from McMurray Middle School, and 100 elementary, middle and high school students in the summer program at Whispering Oaks and Highlands Apartment complexes. NICE also began a pilot program in fall 2017 to serve elementary school students at Tusculum elementary. Human Services, General/Other Services for Ethnic & Immigrant Groups Immigrant, Newcomers, Refugees, Children and Youth (0-19 years), Adolescents Only (13-19 years) The recent addition of elementary school students in the afterschool program has given younger children the opportunity to make music and improve their English through storytelling. Engaging with a younger age group of New Americans enables NICE to take preventative and empowering action with at-risk youth as they are encouraged to dream about the future, graduate high school, apply to college, and pursue higher education. One child shared her enthusiasm, telling program staff that she wants to "be a doctor and help peoples' stomachs." Employment Program Description NICE's Employment Program is a multi-faceted job preparation and placement program that seeks to empower its clients to become selfsufficient. While the ultimate goal for all clients is self-sufficiency through sustainable, long-term employment, individual educational benchmarks are also recognized as essential for sustainable success. Through the incorporation of a comprehensive client skill assessment and analysis, an in-depth individual action plan, and a focus on relationship building with potential employer partners, the employment program is instrumental in putting its clients on the road to sustainable employment. Category Employment, General/Other Employment, General/Other Population Served Immigrant, Newcomers, Refugees,, Examples of Program Success Ariella Irazoke arrived in the United States in October The employment team found her a job at St. Thomas Hospital. When she began her search for a better paying job a year later, NICE stepped in to help place her in a job at Tyson Foods, Inc., where she earned a competitive wage of $14 per hour with benefits. Only a month later, Ariella was promoted to an interpreter position and her pay was raised $17 per hour. Ariella has expressed appreciation for the program's role in helping her to find increasingly competitive job opportunities. 6

Refugee Resettlement and Placement Description Category In 2011, NICE officially began its R&P Refugee Resettlement Program, growing to resettle 231 refugees in The R&P resettlement team fills out paperwork and provides suitable housing and jobs for incoming refugees. Members of the resettlement team meet the refugees at the airport and assist the individual or families through some of the most difficult aspects of resettlement, such as medical appointments, school registration and community mapping. NICE's resettlement department has aided the resettling of refugees from nations including Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Iraq, Syria, Uganda and more. Human Services, General/Other Population Served Immigrant, Newcomers, Refugees,, Examples of Program Success In October 2017, NICE helped to resettle a Russian family of four protected under the 1989 Lautenberg Amendment. They were recently reunited with family in Nashville after 20 years of separation. They all expressed excitement for a new life in the U.S. that affords opportunities previously denied to them. In the days following their resettlement to the U.S., the family said they have "felt that everyone they've met has been happy to welcome them to Tennessee." 7

Nashville Refugee Health Initiative Description Nashville's refugees and immigrants exhibit indicators of declining health, including increased obesity and elevated rates of disease, as well as limited health literacy and a lack of preventative healthcare behaviors. Nashville Refugee Health Initiative helps refugees and immigrants learn healthy living habits, gain tools to live healthy lives, and gain access to healthcare. Health Screenings: Health screenings test participants blood pressure, glucose and BMI levels, and provide consultations on results. Intensive Case Management: Staff will work intensively with clients with medical challenges to address their immediate health needs, including helping them find and access a medical home and make appointments, providing referrals to health service providers, and conducting home visits to assess progress and adherence to doctors' orders. Category Population Served Short Term Success Examples of Program Success None of the above Adults, At-Risk Populations, Immigrant, Newcomers, Refugees The PEACE program's Healthy Lifestyle Choices (HLC) classes have made great strides in addressing healthy behavior formation for at-risk youth. Curriculum includes conflict resolution, nutrition, fitness, safety, and substance abuse prevention. On surveys taken before and after each class, participants demonstrated growth in all of these areas. Not long after moving to Nashville, Sudanese refugee Mohamed Hamdan was in a car accident and hospitalized for injuries.while the accident was a major setback for his new life in the United States, he greatly appreciated NICE s efforts to follow up with him as he recovered. Thanks to the support of the health team at NICE, Mohamed has been able to establish himself in America despite this setback with temporary cash assistance, food stamps, and Medicare. He now has a steady job at Universal Auto Sales in Nashville. Mohamed expresses gratitude for those at NICE who have assisted him in his transition to the United States and who continue to follow up with him even today. 8

PEACE Description Category Population Served Examples of Program Success The Proactive Engagement to Achieve Community Empowerment program (PEACE) was developed in partnership with Peace Ambassadors USA and received its first federal funding for PEACE is one of only five programs nationally to win this funding and the only program in the South. The PEACE program s overall mission is to empower youth and adults to become leaders through community engagement that models inclusivity, unity, and solidarity. By 2019, the program aims to create community-led spaces for open dialogue, enhanced access to resources, and resiliency nurtured across diverse communities in the greater Nashville area.
