1 West Virginia University SGA Meeting- 11/02/ Administration Call to Order- at 7:30pm Hatfields B, Mountainlair Student Union Morgantown, WV Reading of the SGA Mission Statement We, The students of West Virginia University, desiring to preserve within our university an atmosphere of open exchange of ideas with discussion, inquiry and self-expression to insure the person freedoms and general welfare of the student within our University, to promote principles of diversity and to continue in our tradition of responsible self-governance, do hereby establish this Constitution of the West Virginia University Student Government Association. 2 Minutes from last week have been approved Open Student Forum I Discussion Topic: Scheduling and Advising-thoughts? AC Workman- my personal experience is that engineering is very on top of it and very experienced with advising and I think that other colleges should model Sen. Brewster- I have yet to have a good advisor, University College Advisors seemed to not know what they were advising about and now that I m in Eberly it just seems to have not improve that much. I have tried to reach out with no help Rep. Amato- I would like to echo what Brewster said about University College and their lack of advising Sen. Waters- from my own experience, I think it better to be advised by someone who is in your field opposed to someone who is just there to advise you. I started going back to faculty to advising and actually just advised my advisor Sen. Quigley- In forensics, there is one specific advisor but now that im in criminology it seems a little more scattered. I have had troubles with pushing myself harder and also with graduating early. I agree with the peer mentor system. PPT. Heeter- I haven t had a horrible experience with my advisor, I met him through a class but I am currently my brothers peer mentor Sen. Hunt- When I got into Ex Phys I got a track sheet of what to expect, and my advisor is also my teacher in my Sen. Knollinger- We have a track sheet and all faculty are advisors and I think I have the worst advisor but since I have become more involved I have been able reach out to people I know Sen. Smith- I was never able to keep track of people within the University College but now that I am within the Reed College I have found it to be really easy to advise and schedule and talk to anyone about my future. So I think we could definitely take a look at Reed College Sen. Dudley- I think that a lot of problems that you might have had in the past as a freshman will be resolved soon. There is going to be big changes to the intro classes more focus on departments, which will allow for peer advising Rep. Smith- The Reed College is so personal with their students, which I think allows their advising system to work easier. I think that the communication is huge

3 Dir. Luther- My advising experience has gotten better as I have gotten older and handled it myself. Sen. Quigley- Everyone has a four-year plan on the catalog Prof. Klandorf- DegreeWorks has defiw look like? Prof. Brewster- Advising is my least favorite season; out of 55 advisees I have only seen 35 and only 4 brought a schedule. There is only one person in our department that is a dedicated advisor otherwise all faculties. Outside of priory registration, most departments you don t really have an advisor. It s a bad model. Rep. Kitchen- I have been here for 3 years and I have had 4 advisors which has been difficult and I transferred into a new major so it was not yet on degreeworks. I missed a crucial class my first year that now is making me take a full year, I think advising in the CAC needs to be adjusted so that there can be better focus on the arts. VP McIntyre- So in closing I think that this is very mixed Sen. Waris- Many of you know that we had an event last night of the screening of the White Helmets. This film outlines the issues we are facing as a society. The White Helmets are the first responders to the bombings in Syria. I have Muwaz here, he is an expert here and he is an expert on the Syrian Conflict Mr. Muwaz- The conflict has killed over half a million people. I still have many many family and friends still in Syria so this is close to my home. 12 mil. Refugees. Chief Rabi called this a small holocaust, humanity keeps repeating itself after each genocide always saying never again but here we are. HR5732 is a bill going around Congress right now, it is bipartiansian; call your congressional hotline and ask to be connected to your congressman and ask them to vote yes for this bill. This will allow sanctions on those bombing in Syria. This bill really needs grassroots support right now so please call. Dir. Terhani- This is an everyone WVU thing, but effective January WVU is requesting the Mountain line to only go to the crossing and towers. There are two hearings next week for it. The President s Report President Merow- Not a ton this week but next week is the Big 12 conference starting next Thursday! Please fill out by Friday, and we will let you know the official list by Sunday. The game is this Saturday at 7pm. Please be safe and don t get too rowdy. Please get in your seats early to welcome the team out onto the field! Thanks to everyone who talked tonight, next week we are talking about finding for study abroad. It is Mountaineer Week! We are doing well so far.

4 Senators Reports Senator Burgess So this past Monday was a huge breakthrough for my platform, Establishing Priority Registration for Veterans and ROTC. With ROTC, you have an allotted amount of time with your scholarship and to gain your position within the Military. I wanted to thank Amee Phiferer and Shani for helping me; ROTC Cadets registered on Monday. Senator Goff Hi! So I am trying to fix the price of lost/replacement IDs. If you have had experience with this please let me know Senator Kaska- Last year, I did a charger audit; so what I am asking everyone to do and specifically college reps to see if there needs to be more chargers or chargers fixed. aakaska@mix, me your findings. Thank you. College Representatives Reports none Executive Reports Treasurer Roshan- We have our budget!!! I am going to walk you through it like you have never seen before! Operations budget is just what we spend to run what we do. External is what we award to grants. This year we want to make clear to orgs what we can and cannot pay for and when they need it for. We have $31,435 for operations and have spent $7, thus far. Gen Assembly has $250 each. We have $15,000 for the remainder of the year so please let me know what you know what you have planned. External funding is $127,720 with $100,000 and $27,730 for rainy days. A bell curve is what I hope for our grant allocation will look like this year. So as a BoF we review the application, meet with the org see what they are doing and match their initiative. There are five brackets that we have devised money allocations into. The online grant application has made it more accessible to student orgs, thanks to Lizzie B and Rachel and so we have seen twice as many orgs at this point in time than last year. So far as a BoF we have reworked the bylaws, making the application more accessible, and increased the grant cap. We want to implement the grants into the Tracker. The big thing I want to do is to introduce the grants as a Allocation Bill. Questions? Sen. McGuire- What would the bill be like? Treasurer Daniel- yes so it would have the rationale and then the line items Sen. McGuire- that is amazing

5 AC Workman- Will you show the breakdown to vote on? Treasurer Daniel- those funds are through student life now this is our budget Prof. Klandorf- The $250 seems small Treasurer Daniel- That money doesn t always get used Prof. Brewster- When you don t use this money, it doesn t roll over, it literally just goes away. Be conscious and do not frivolously spend especially with grants you want to be consistent. Prof. Klandorf- In my department, we have wish lists for extra money Treasurer Daniel- I think the problem is no one knew how much money we had at the end but this year, I want us to know and be transparent throughout Exec. Sec Barnhart- Women s Empowerment Week is November th Dept. Underwood- I need people Thursday the 10 th from 2-6pm for Volunteering. The doodle pool is for volunteering and the google doc is for attending. The Volunteering is cut-off at 8 people. Dir. Kumar- I would like to give a status update to the tracker. It is starting to see some life! But on another note, we should know the reason behind this bus change! Unfinished Business Sen. Kaska- add Waris to roll New Business Grants o Experimental Rocketry Treasurer Daniel- They are going to their annual conference in Arizona. Last year they placed 9 th. They are there for 7 nights, and are asking for lodging and it is 57$ a room and they want 4 rooms a night. $ for the lodging and we are suggesting the full amount Sen. Sutherland- UC Sen. Waters- If you are in the hospital on Tuesday, someone from the county clerk can come bring Advisor Reports Prof. Brewster- Text me if you are 21 and available at 1:30 to drive a van to pick 8 members up. On Sunday Trevor, Jules and I are going to meet to schedule everyone for the events. Please make sure you show up. It is snappy casual so please wear the polo s to at least one of the events. Prof. Klandorf- So I asked my class this week who they were going to vote for, half the class was not voting, half was voting for trump and only one was voting for Hilary Clinton. I was shocked.
