NOMINATION OF THREE MEMBERS OF THE EXECUTIVE BOARD TO SIT ON THE UNESCO-IBE JOINT COMMITTEE The Executive Board decided to appoint, as representing Unesco on the Joint Unesco- International Bureau of Education Committee for , the following: H. E. Dr. Jose R. Martinez Cobo (Ecuador) Dr. Maria Schlueter-Hermkes (Federal Republic of Germany) ITEM 6. CONSIDERATION OF ANY URGENT QUESTIONS ARISING OUT OF DECISIONS ADOPTED BY THE GENERAL CONFERENCE AT ITS TENTH SESSION There being no urgent question to consider at the 53rd session, this item was withdrawn from the agenda. ITEM 7. EXECUTION OF THE PROGRAMME 7. 1 Invitations to the XXIInd International Conference on Public Education (document 53 EX/2) The Executive Board approved the list of invitations contained in document 53 EX/2. It decided to add to that list, under the heading International Organizations, the International Federation of University Women. It also decided to adjourn, in accordance with Rule 39 of the Rules of Procedure. the debate on a proposal that an invitation should be addressed to the People s Republic of China. 7.2 New Statutes of the Advisory Committee for the Major Project on Mutual Appreciation of Eastern and Western Cultural Values (document 53 EX/3) After considering the draft Statutes set forth in document 53 EX/3, the Executive Board approved that text, as amended during its discussion. The new Statutes of the Advisory Committee are reproduced in an annex hereto. 7.3 Accession to the Convention and Protocol for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict (document 53 EX/4) The Executive Board decided, in accordance with Article 32 of the Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, that an invitation to accede to the Convention and Protocol should be sent to every State becoming a Member of Unesco which was not invited to the Intergovernmental Conference on the
4 53 EX/Decisions - page 4 Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, held at The Hague from 21 April to 14 May This decision is operative forthwith as regards the two following Member States: Ghana Federation of Malaya ITEM 8. ITEM 9. CONSULTATIONS ON APPOINTMENTS TO HIGHER POSTS IN THE SECRETARIAT (in private meeting) OTHER QUESTIONS 9. 1 Dates of the 54th session of the Executive Board The Executive Board provisionally fixed the opening of its 54th session for Monday 25 May The session would last approximately 3 weeks. PRIVATE MEETINGS The Executive Board held a short private meeting on the afternoon of Saturday, 6 December, during which the Director-General consulted the Board on the organization of the Directorate and of the New York Office, as well as on various staff questions. As this meeting took place at the end of the session, it was not the subject of any announcement.
5 53 EX/Decisions - page 5 Annex ANNEX STATUTES OF THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON MUTUAL APPRECIATION OF EASTERN AND WESTERN CULTURAL VALUES Article I In implementation of resolution 4. 91, adopted by the General Conference at its tenth session, an Advisory Committee is hereby established to advise the Director-General on any questions concerning the preparation or execution of the Major Project on Mutual Appreciation of Eastern and Western Cultural Values. Article II The Advisory Committee shall be composed of twelve members, appointed by the Director- General, who shall so far as possible be representative of the different Eastern and Western cultures and the principal disciplines and techniques to be enlisted for the carrying out of this project. The Director-General or his representative shall attend the meetings of the Advisory Committee and take part in its work, without the right to vote. Article III The Advisory Committee shall be convened by the Director-General and shall meet at least once in each two-year financial period. Article IV Appropriate international governmental or non-governmental organizations may be invited by the Director-General to send observers to the sessions of the Committee. Article V Unesco shall pay the travel and subsistence expenses of the members of the Committee, but not of observers. Article VI The Secretariat of the Advisory Committee shall be provided by Unesco staff members designated by the Director-General. Article VII The Committee s term of office shall expire on 31 December extended by decision of the Executive Board. It may, however, be
