1 The Kentucky Pioneer, Volume 10, Issue 3 April 2014 The Kentucky Pioneer United we stand, divided we fall. K e n t u c k y S o c i e t y Sons of the American Revolution Message from the KYSSAR President Compatriots, We have just completed the Kentucky Society s 125 th Anniversary celebration. I want to express a big Thank You!, to everyone who joined us in Frankfort on April 8 th. Just being in the same room where our Society was founded brought home what we are charged to do: Gather the scattered bits of history, and preserve them for future generations. I hope that our Founders would be proud of the organization that we have become and the service we perform for each of our communities. KYSSAR Officers President : Doug Collins president@kyssar.org President Elect: Charles R. Scott president-elect@kyssar.org Vice President: Dr. Larry Leslie vice-president@kyssar.org President Doug Collins Special thanks to our roster of speakers and participants: David Sympson, Charlie Scott, Will Schrader, Forrest Chilton, Tom Geimeier, Chuck Scott, Scott Giltner, Paul Whitty, Geoff Baggett, Michael Colegrove, Dr. Larry Leslie and Lance Carter. You guys did a fantastic job! Lastly, I want to thank Dan Klinck for coordinating one of the largest Color Guard contingents I have been a part of. I was proud to see the mass of colors presented and the mix of Color Guardsmen, both in regimental uniform and in militia attire. Our next State Meeting will be held August 16, 2014 at the Blue Licks Battlefield State Park in conjunction with the Battle of Blue Licks Memorial Service. Please make plans to attend the meeting and stay for the service. There are more details later in the newsletter. In preparation for the next State Meeting, I ask that all Chapters start using the Americanism Scoresheet to record their activities. The score sheet can be accessed via the following link: It may look like you need to be a computer aficionado to fill out, but it is actually very easy. If you have questions, there are many that can assist you in working through the process. As a long time employee of a healthcare company, I know first-hand that in order to get paid for the services provided to our patients, a record of those services is necessary to support the billing. As a service organization, KYSSAR is not really any different. Our payment (via awards) is based on supporting documentation of the services provided (activities participated in). The Americanism score sheet, is the vehicle used to record that participation so that each Chapter, and ultimately the Kentucky Society, can take credit for the things each of you are already doing. There are numerous upcoming activities for your participation. Grave markings, parades, school programs, etc. Keep up the good work that makes Kentucky shine. Stephen Trigg Chapter recently spoke to the Pennyroyal Area Christian Home school Educators of Kentucky (PACHEK) in Hopkinsville. He delivered a Revolutionary War presentation to approximately fifty students and families. In addition, he was able to distribute twenty copies of the "Keyhole to History" and "America's Heritage" CD's to participating families, as well as secure participants in the various grade-level educational contests of the SAR. The Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter is now a member of their Face book Group, and able to keep the organization posted on chapter events and initiatives. Geoff Baggett, President of the Colonel Stephen Trigg Chapter (back row center), and Pennyroyal Area Christian Home school students. Compatriots from the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter recently visited with veteran Jerry Swinford in Cadiz. Mr. Swinford is a former United States Marine, and served with Charlie Company, 1st Battalion of the 7th Marines in Vietnam from 1966 to The Compatriots presented him with a "We Appreciate Our Veterans" Certificate and challenge coin. The chapter has adopted the coin produced by loveyourveterans.org, a one ounce copper round marked with the motto, "Ensuring No Hero is Left Behind - Even After They Return." Pictured with Mr. Swinford is Dylan Lancaster, one of the newest members of the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter, having made his application just this month. The Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter in Cadiz will be hosting a Grave Marking Ceremony on Patriot's Day, April 19, for Private Miles Hollowell of the North Carolina Militia. Hollowell served in the Martin County Regiment in North Carolina, then relocated later in life to Trigg County, Kentucky, where he died in He is buried in the Larkins Cemetery in rural Trigg County. Information and directions can be found on the "Future Grave Markings" page of the chapter's web site, If you would like to be involved in the grave marking as a rifleman in the musket tribute, color guard, or by presenting flowers or a wreath, please contact chapter president Geoff Baggett at triggpatriots@usa.com so that you may be included in the program. 6 The Kentucky Pioneer, Volume 10, Issue 3 Page 6 Center for Advancing America s Heritage University of the Cumberlands Williamsburg, KY Thanks to a grant from the Steele-Reece Foundation and a partnership between the University of the Cumberlands, the University of Louisville and the National Society Sons of the American Revolution, over 1000 elementary and middle school students from Eastern Kentucky had an opportunity to learn more about early American history, the Revolutionary War soldier and the evolution of our American flags. NSSAR Education Director Colleen Wilson and NSSAR Archivist Rae Ann Sauer led volunteers which included four from the Alabama Society, six from the Gov. Isaac Shelby Chapter KYSSAR and an assortment of employees from the University of the Cumberlands. The three day program was a great learning experience for the students and a rewarding experience for those taking part in this educational program. Articles of Association on display for students Few Americans are aware that our union of states predates the Revolutionary War and the Declaration of Independence. The Union is much older than the Constitution. It was formed, in fact, by the Articles of Association in It was matured and continued by the Declaration of Independence in It was further matured... by the Articles of Confederation in And finally, in 1787, one of the declared objects for ordaining and establishing the Constitution was "to form a more perfect Union." The Articles of Association was drawn up and signed by members of the First Continental Congress in The intent of the Congress and the Articles was to unify the British American colonies into a cohesive political body which could resist the high taxation and economic sanctions that the Crown had imposed on them. There was no intent to sever allegiance, only to alter Britain's policies towards the colonies and to repeal the Coercive Acts that had been passed by Parliament. On October 20, 1774 the First Continental Congress passed the Articles of Association which laid out grievances and fourteen economic and boycotting measures that the colonies would take against the Crown and British commerce. More importantly, the colonies had taken the first step in coalescing into and union of states that would culminate in the Constitution thirteen years later. The signers considered the Articles of Association as a contract, which universally pledged all the colonies together under "self rule." In some ways, the Articles of Association is just as important as the Declaration of Independence. Copies of the Articles were sent to all the colonies and to Great Britain, but the original, with the signatures of fifty three of our founding fathers, was lost. In 1978 a collector who was visiting Knoxville Tennessee on business went into a used book store in hopes of finding a first edition copy of "Lee and His Lieutenants," which was published in He was thrilled to find just what he was looking for. When he got home, he discovered a large document folded neatly and resting between the leaves of the book. He did not know what he had found, but he could not miss the signatures of George Washington, John Adams, Roger Sherman and fifty other men. The document was later authenticated by scholars at the Smithsonian and other institutions. It was page four, the signature page, of the original hand drafted Articles of Association. The fate of pages 1-3 is still a mystery. But, if only one page was to survive, this was the page to have! Alabama Society Compatriot Bill Stone talks to the students about the historical Articles of Association. (See document on next page) Alabama Society members (L-R) are: Rick Wells, Bill Stone, Bob Anderson and Mack Clark.

8 The Kentucky Pioneer, Volume 10, Issue 3 Page 8 Center for Advancing America s Heritage (continued) This pictures shows Vic Bitter talking to the students about the Star Spangled Banner flag. Tom Higgins and Don Root are holding the flag. Earlier the students said the pledge to the flag and flag etiquette was discussed. A flag folding ceremony was also done (explaining each fold.) Music during the revolution was discussed in this section that included a fife solo by Charlie Scott. Jordyne Gunthert (a/k/a Elizabeth Betsy Ross), an employee of the University of the Cumberlands, charmed both the students and the SAR Compatriots as she talked about her flag and told why the stars are in a circle and how she designed the five pointed star. Here she stands with Tom Higgins and Vic Bitter. John Clay Barnett, Chuck Scott and Rev. Forrest Chilton had a hands-on program where they discussed how the soldiers dressed, weapons they had and items carried in their haversacks. Rae Ann Sauer leads the students on how to make a water compass. Rae Ann Sauer and Colleen Wilson were presented with Martha Washington medals for their efforts in developing the CAAH program.
