2 Chapter President s Message Simon Kenton Chapter Kentucky Society President s Message Summer Edition, Congress Reports Below Simon Kenton Compatriots, Ladies, Friends, The Kentucky Society won a number of National awards at the recent National Congress, in Phoenix, Arizona. The Simon Kenton Chapter contributed a substantial number of points in this joint Kentucky effort. I extend congratulations and thanks to every Compatriot who helped make Simon Kenton one of the most competitive Chapters in the country. The Simon Kenton Chapter placed second, once again, in the President General s Activity Contest. The fact we have been in the top two the past three years is still quite an accomplishment and one to be very proud of. Simon Kenton had the most points in the US Stark Service to Veterans Contest, but a Chapter cannot win the major contests two years in a row. Only Texas, Georgia, and North Carolina won more overall awards. I have listed the KYSSAR awards below for your perusal: Kentucky Society Awards (KYSSAR) 122 nd National Congress Phoenix, Arizona CAR Activities Award National Society Periodicals Award Charlie Scott, Editor The Kentucky Society Yearbook U.S. Stark Award Gov. Isaac Shelby, Simon Kenton and the Kentucky Society Honorable Mention, but with the highest National point totals Syracuse Award Society with the most new Chapters (3) Genealogist General Award Society with the least amount of Pended applications great work Chapter Registrars Liberty Bell Americanism Award Gov. Schrader, Larry M. Leslie, Jesse, L. Hagan, Daniel W. Dockrey Jr., & Alfred E. Coleman. Harvey Hampton will receive his at the 2013 Congress. Rev. Forrest Chilton poses with the new Honor and Remember Flag. The flag was personalized with the name of Rev. Chilton s Revolutionary ancestor. The new Honor and Remember Flag Program was presented and explained at the Congress. In more than 200 years of our Nation s history, there has never been an officially recognized symbol that reminds us daily of the sacrifices made by members of our military who have lost their lives in service to our country. The Honor and Remember organization has launched a National campaign to create an emblem with which every patriotic American can acknowledge daily the ultimate price of freedom. The Honor and Remember Flag recognizes all individuals who have died as a result of serving in the United States military dating back to the founding of our Nation. The goal of the organization is to have the flag congressionally and militarily sanctioned as a permanent symbol. The new flag will also promote healing to the families who have lost loved ones. The Website is Honor and Remember.org The red field represents the blood that has been shed; the white the purity of sacrifice; the blue star the active service in military conflict; the gold star represents the ultimate sacrifice; the folded flag the final tribute; and the eternal flame serves as a reminder of the spirit that has departed this life yet lives on in our memories. The flags can be personalized with the name of a loved one. Flag cost $50. Regards, Tom 3

Please contact Tom if you are able to make the trip. We plan to stop at Wagners, in Oldenburg, for lunch on the return trip. National Congress 2015 Louisville The National Congress 2015 will be held in Louisville and hosted by the Kentucky Society. There is normally a four to five year time frame in which to plan for the event. I learned a lot at the Phoenix 2012 Congress this year will be in Kansas City, MO; 2014 in Greenville, SC. The honor of hosting the National Congress comes to Kentucky more than any other state since the national Headquarters are in Louisville. (every five to seven years) The success will be the result of the commitment and the volunteering of many Kentucky Compatriots. Chuck Scott, of the Gov. Isaac Shelby Chapter, will serve as the KYSSAR Congress 2015 Chairman and will need a strong presence of Simon Kenton members. There are a number of key tasks the Kentucky Society is responsible for: assisting in the planning of the Host Reception; Registration; Two City or Local Event Tours; the Ladies Hospitality Room; Ambassadors to assist out of town guests; Artwork for the shirts, coin, Congress medals; PR and Kentucky displays at the 2013, and 2014 Congresses; Fundraising ideas: and Banquet decorations for the Luncheon and two evening events. The three amigos at the National Congress; Tom Payne, Rev. Forrest Chilton, and Tom Geimeier Paul Wilke was awarded the Minuteman Award by PG Magerkurth. The Minuteman is the SAR s highest award. Congratulations to Paul for his outstanding service. Central District State representatives pose with outgoing VPG, T.Rex Legler 10

Donation received from the Wilkersons The Simon Kenton Chapter extends gratitude and thanks to Nancy Bird and William H. Wilkerson for their generous donation. Nancy has been a DAR member since1963 and her original DAR Chapter was the Simon Kenton. Bill is a decorated WW II veteran. (95) Nancy and Bill wanted to thank the Simon Kenton Chapter for their efforts and also supporting their mutual interests. 11
