Committee: Mark Tessler (chair), Allen Hicken, Robert Mickey, Andrew Shryock Abstract: Social diversity has been blamed for poor public goods provision in a number of different contexts. It is associated with reduced spending on services, meager rates of tax collection, and poor policies. At the same time, recent research has indicated that only certain types of diversity are associated with poor services and that in some cases diversity can actually improve service provision. I investigate these assertions by focusing on tribal diversity in the case of Jordan. Specifically, I examine the importance of tribal cohesion in mediating the impact of diversity as well as tribal diversity s influence on service provision, electoral competition and patronage. This project analyzes quantitative data collected for all 93 of Jordan s municipalities as well as over 100 interviews conducted across the country. Major Field: Comparative Politics.
