1 2012-present Assistant Professor, the University of Iowa, Sociology EDUCATION Ph.D. in Sociology Northwestern University, 2012 Bureaucratic Corruption in Transition Economies: Political Regime, Organizations, and Informality in Ukraine and Belarus M.S. in Sociology University of Wisconsin-Madison, 2007 B.A. in Sociology and Italian Middlebury College, 2005 Summa Cum Laude Books PUBLICATIONS Zaloznaya, M. (Forthcoming in Spring 2017). The Politics of Bureaucratic Corruption in Post-Transitional Eastern Europe. Cambridge University Press. Based on ethnographic, historical, and survey data, The Politics of Bureaucratic Corruption explores the political roots of bureaucratic corruption in two former Soviet republics. Its main argument holds that in hybrid political regimes that have recently emerged in Belarus, Ukraine, and many other non-democratic societies, the rates of political turnover shape the patterns of petty economic crime in service-provision organizations. Theoretically, the book rejects the dominant paradigm, which attributes corruption to the allegedly on-going democratization. Instead, it offers a more nuanced approach that appreciates the complexity of corruption economies in non-western societies, embraces local meanings of corruption, and recognizes the stability of new post-transitional regimes in Eastern Europe and beyond. Peer-Reviewed Articles and Chapters Reisinger, W., Zaloznaya, M., and V. Claypool. (2016). Does Everyday Corruption Affect How Russians View Their Political Leadership? Post-Soviet Affairs.
