1 The No-Nonsense Guide to CLIMATE CHANGE Publishers have created lists of short books that discuss the questions that your average [electoral] candidate will only ever touch if armed with a slogan and a soundbite. Together [such books] hint at a resurgence of the grand educational tradition... Closest to the hot headline issues are The No- Nonsense Guides. These target those topics that a large army of voters care about, but that politicos evade. Arguments, figures and documents combine to prove that good journalism is far too important to be left to (most) journalists. Boyd Tonkin, The Independent, London
2 About the author Dinyar Godrej is a co-editor of the New Internationalist magazine. Special thanks to: Martina Krueger, for much help and kindness. Adam Ma'anit for good-humored support. Troth Wells for her patience. Bart Lienard, for putting up without complaint with endless pleas for help and much neglect. My parents Noshirwan and Phyllis, for being lovely. Our mission is to report on issues of global justice. We publish informative current affairs and popular reference titles, complemented by world food, photography and gift books as well as calendars, diaries, maps and posters all with a global justice world view. If you like this No-Nonsense Guide you'll also love the New Internationalist magazine. Each month it takes a different subject such as Trade Justice, Nuclear Power or Iraq, exploring and explaining the issues in a concise way; the magazine is full of photos, charts and graphs as well as music, film and book reviews, country profiles, interviews and news. 5 Foreword MOST EVERYONE HAS heard about climate change, though they might not fully understand all the issues. Some are even still in denial thanks to the fossil fuel industry s efforts to sow confusion and doubt in the public debate. Many indigenous communities, however, have no doubt of its existence and very real implications for their livelihoods and the future of their way of life. Scientists too are increasingly certain. They continue to conclude with deep urgency that climate change is creating dangerous conditions that require immediate attention. The measurable impacts are already clear. Human survival is increasingly threatened by the bio-degenerative consequences of an industrial and technological society: depletion of aquifers and water resources; expanding deserts; decreasing forests; declining fisheries; poisoned food, water and air; and climatic extremes such as floods, hurricanes and droughts. Air pollution from burning fossil fuels causes health effects such as asthma and acute respiratory disorders. While environmental degradation in itself is by no means new, the compounding changes caused by climate change can further contribute to the dimensions of extreme poverty, hunger, human settlement, displacement, landless populations and even increases in child mortality in drought-afflicted countries such as Africa. Communities disproportionately impacted by climate change and the continued exploration, extraction and burning of fossil fuels include small island states, whose very existence is threatened, as well as indigenous peoples, the poor and the marginalized, particularly women, children and the elderly around the world. Solutions to the climate change problem must emphasize real, verifiable reductions in fossil fuel emissions. 5
6 Foreword Climate change has become politicized with overlays of complexities that have generally limited the search for solutions to within the ranks of politicians, lawyers, technocrats and the petroleum and energy industry. Grassroots people all over the world are starting to denounce further delays in transitioning away from a fossil fuel economy that are being caused by corporate and governmental attempts to construct a carbon market instead of legislating real change. The No-Nonsense Guide to Climate Change provides much needed information that helps us learn about climate change and promote genuine solutions to the problem. The connection between sustainable development and the negative effects of climate change is undeniable. The need to address climate change as a human rights issue is becoming more urgent. Climate change is a genuine threat to the health, physical and cultural survival of not just our indigenous peoples, but to all humans on this planet we call Mother Earth. As Corbin Harney, spiritual leader of the Western Shoshone indigenous people says, We, the people, are going to have to put our thoughts together, our power together, to save our planet here. We've only got one water, one air, one Mother Earth. Tom Goldtooth Executive Director, Indigenous Environment Network 6
