8 Dies Quiz to Delve Into Latin-America The special House committee investigating un-american activities will report to the next Congress on the growth of nazism, fascism and communism in Latin-America as well as in the United States, it was learned today. Chairman Martin Dies (D., Tex.) said in an exclusive interview that the investigation will begin about Aug. 1 in Los Angeles, Calif. After visiting other cities on the West Coast the group will move to Chicago, Detroit and New York. 'We intend to pay special, attention to any situations which our studies may reveal exist in Latin- America which might have serious effects on the United States. However, we do not intend to meddle other nations' affairs," said Dies. He indicated he may seek secret information from the Justice Depart- nient which recently conducted an extensive investigation of activities of an alleged Nazi spy ring in the East.
9 JUNE 20, 1938 Johnstown's Mayor Faces Bribe Charge JOHNSTOWN, Pa., June 20 Mayor Daniel J. Shields, Johnstown's vigorous chief executive who waged a spectacular fight against the Committee for Industrial Organization, today appears before a magistrate to answer charges of bribery, extortion and malfeasance. Hearing was postponed several times to permit Mayor Shields to prepare a "full defense." The Mayor hopes to have the charges disinissed. Charges are outgrowth of the Mayor's alleged activities in breaking the- Steel Workers Organizing Com.- mittee's p ic k e t lines, which last June surrounded Bethlehem Steel C o r p.'s Cambria plant. He is charged with "extorting; receiving and taking under the color of his office certain fees. not being allowed by any act of assembly.". Shieldsisal- Mayor Shields leged to have received from officials of Bethlehem Steel $36, during the strike. The charge is based upon, evidence gathered at hearings before the National Labor' Relations Board and the La Follette Civil Liberties Committee. Co-defendant is Councilman Fulton I. Connor, one-time treasurer of the Johnstown Citizens' Committee, which conducted a drive for funds to "preserve law and order" during the strike. Connor is -charged with participating in the alleged illegal transaction between the Mayor and Bethlehem, handling $25,000 of the alleged bribe money. We do NOT examine eyes. Eye trouble? 10 Ickes Note Protects Adams From Purge' Political observers believed today that a letter of commendation written by Interior Secretary Ickes would protect Sen. Alva B. Adams (D., Col.) front any Administration "purge".in the --Colorado primary in September. j Adams opposed President Roosevelt's court reorganization bill but has supported virtually every other New Deal issue. He is in almost the same political position as was Sen. Guy M. Gillette (D., Ia.) during his recent campaign for renomination against Rep. Otha D. Wearin (D., Ia.). But Adams has in his files a letter from Ickes giving him "highest commendation" and praising his "unfailing energy, intelligence, and statesinanship." This, it was believed, would make it unlikely that any other New Dealer would support Adams' opponent, kjudge Benjamin C. Hilliard, who announced.for the Democratic senatorial i nomination after a White House visit ' and to whom, therefore, was attributed the President's support. STOCKS the find: char& InOT I I I I f
