1 AMBEDKAR MEMORIAL NATIONAL ESSAY COMPETITION 2017 PRESENTED BY EDUCENTRIC & INDIAN JOURNAL of CONSTITUTIONAL STUDIES Educentric Educentric aims to bridge the ever-increasing gap between the lessons and the students, we recognized the numerous options available online and offline for materials, tuitions, and the mayhem this causes in the minds of the students, therefore we decided to intercede, and provide a portal which is a one stop shop for students across various streams. Soliciting bimonthly scientific articles, research papers in international and constitutional law from scholars, judges and people from related fields, such as economics, philosophy and political science, the Journal aims to provide a critical analysis of current issues, the debates and the global trends that have immense constitutional implications. editor@ijcons.com About the Essay Competition: Ambedkar Memorial National Essay competition is an effort to develop a love for the constitution in the young minds and develop a keen legal acumen and understanding of the various aspects of the magnum opus of Dr. Ambedkar. The topics have been chosen so that they challenge the participants to think outside the box, to develop a rational, critical and analytical thinking in the Students

2 THEME: JUDICIAL REVIEW The judiciary acts as the guardian of the constitution; over the years the judiciary has played a very important role in maintaining and preserving the sanctity of the glorious ideals of the Constitution. The role of the judiciary has changed, and it has evolved from being the weakest organ to the most powerful organ of the government. The judiciary has played varying roles in shaping the present structure of our constitution, and through this essay competition, we would like to highlight the role of judiciary in shaping modern India. 1. The Judicial Bench. (Context: Judicial decisions in the light of jurisprudential leanings of the judges involved. The idea is to explore landmark decisions, a lot of which became iconic in shaping our constitutional history, in the light of the bench that was present and their ideologies.) 2. Uniform Civil Code: In the light of judicial stand on personal laws. 3. Ideation of a Living Constitution or a Dead constitution. 4. Judicial Review of the pardoning power of the President and the Governors of India. 5. The aid and advice of Council of Ministers: The position of the judiciary in making the President a mere rubber stamp. 6. Judicial review of Economic legislations. (Context: The judicial approach to economic legislations has always been deferential, or has it? Explore this idea, where does economic legislation stand vis-à-vis other aspects of the constitution.) 7. Contempt of Court. (Context: The judicial stand on contempt of court proceedings have never been strict, they change as per circumstances and people involved. Examine in the light of recent events. ) 8. Chasing its own tail around the maple. (Context: constituent power gives rise to the constitution, which gives rise to the constituting power{legislature, executive, judiciary} which proceeds to amend the constitution, in effect exercising amending/constituent power, explore the idea in light of article 370 or any other amendment/ proposed amendment or any dilemma and limit yourself to the constitutional discussion.) 9. Evolution is better than revolution. ( Context: Explore the idea in the light of history of judicial review in India) 10. Judicial review grant of mining lease granted by government.

Eligibility The competition is open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled in any law course in a recognized University/College/Institute in India. Only one submission per author shall be entertained. Co-authorship is permitted up to 2 authors only.

4 Guidelines for Submission The essays must be submitted in English only. The essays should be the original work of the authors. Any kind of plagiarism will lead to disqualification. The essays published elsewhere or selected/submitted for publication elsewhere shall be disqualified. The name of the author(s) should not be mentioned anywhere in the essay. The word limit for the essay is words, not including footnotes. The essays should be typed in: Times New Roman, Font Size 12 and Line Spacing 1.5. The footnotes must be typed in: Times New Roman, Font Size 10 and Line Spacing 1. The margins should be 1 or 2.54 cm on all sides. Any uniform mode of citation to be followed. The participants are required to send the following details in a separate word document attached to the Title of the Essay; Name of the Author(s); College/ Institute/University of Author(s) address & Contact No. of Author(s) Important Note All original essays submitted for this competition shall become the joint property of Educentric and Indian Journal of Constitutional Studies Educentric and Indian Journal of Constitutional Studies shall have the right to publish the entries in the form of a journal, book, e-book. A Committee of Experts shall be constituted as a Jury, to select the winning entries. The decision of the Jury shall be final and binding.

5 Educentric possesses the right to reject entries which do not conform to the Guidelines for Submission. Educentric reserves the absolute rights to cancel, defer, or postpone indefinitely, the competition in the event of the accruing of any incident, natural or manmade. In case of any dispute, the decision of Educentric shall be final and binding.
