Examine how Latin music infiltrated rhythm and blues and rock n roll in the 1960s. Sunday, September 9 4 p.m. latin MUSIC USA: THE CHICAnO WAVE/DIVAS AnD SUPERSTARS Mexican Americans across the Southwest create their own distinct musical voices during the second half of the 20th century, propelling them from the barrio to the national stage. Later, the Latin Pop brings Spanish language rap, reggaeton, and rock en Español to the English-language market. Wednesday, September p.m. WIllIE VElASQUEZ: YOUR VOTE IS YOUR VOICE A documentary about the charismatic pioneering activist whose rallying cry, su voto es su voz (your vote is your voice), started a grassroots movement that transformed the nation s political landscape and paved the way for the growing power of the Latino vote. 6 Thursday, September p.m. VOCES On PbS: now En ESPAnOl A fascinating look at a rarely seen side of Hollywood, this program follows the trials and travails of five hard-working Latina actresses who dub Desperate Housewives for Spanish language audiences in the U.S. Friday, September 21 8:30 p.m. InDEPEnDEnT lens: DOlORES The film chronicles the life of activist Dolores Huerta, who was an equal partner in founding the first farm workers union with Cesar Chavez. Repeats Sun 9/30, 2:30 p.m. Friday, September 21 10:30 p.m. THE RISE AnD FAll OF THE brown buffalo A fresh and innovative look into the life of radical Chicano lawyer, author, and counterculture icon, Oscar Zeta Acosta. The film explores issues of racial identity, criminal justice and politics while revealing the personal story of a troubled and brilliant man coming to terms with his identity. PART 5: PREJUDICE AnD PRIDE This episode details the creation of the proud Chicano identity. Labor leaders organize farm workers in California while activists push for better educational opportunities for Latinos. PART 6: PERIl AnD PROMISE A second wave of Cubans arrives in Miami during the Mariel exodus, while hundreds of thousands of Salvadorans, Nicaraguans, and Guatemalans flee civil wars, death squads, and unrest. 8 Friday, September 28 8:30 p.m. VOCES On PbS: CHIlDREn OF GIAnT The 1955 western Giant was one of the first films to explore the racial divide between Anglos and Mexican Americans in the Southwest. This documentary explores how the making of a classic Hollywood movie transformed the lives of residents of a small Texas town. Friday, September p.m. HISPAnIC HERITAGE AWARDS The highest honor in the U.S. given by Latino people to Latino people, the Hispanic Heritage Awards recognizes excellence in a variety of fields from arts to leadership to STEM and many more, and features special musical performances and celebrity appearances.
