2 LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN Action Against Hunger - Spain has grown in 2014, both in terms of the amount of operations and the number of people our help has reached. Achieving this growth has not been easy. In spite of the recovery of macroeconomic recovery, the context for development for non-profit organisations in Spain remains a challenge. According to the Spanish Foundations Association, more than 10% of the foundations active in 2008 have disappeared. Our commitment to diversified funding sources is, perhaps, what has allowed us to brave the storm. It is also down to the solidarity of our social support, which has not dwindled even in the toughest of times. We are consolidating as a leading organisation in humanitarian emergency response, with our intervention in the Philippines receiving formal recognition from Philippine institutions, international donors and Spanish international cooperation. Syria, Gaza and South Sudan are other examples of mobilisation work through which we have saved lives this year. However, these kinds of interventions must not mean we forget other situations, more distanced from the media (and more difficult to fund), such as the prevention of chronic malnutrition in Latin America or promoting resilience in Sahel countries. It has also been a year of important methodological innovations. Unconditional financial help, for example, or funding in exchange for community work is consolidating its position as one of the most effective forms of humanitarian action, by offering beneficiaries the opportunity to decide their priorities and fostering local economies. Another good example is integrating tablets and smartphones into quick data collection when carrying out nutritional surveys. Internally, we have strengthened the processes of financial control, logistical supply and continuous training for our staff - the more than 1,600 women and men who fight hunger on a daily basis in different situations in Africa, Asia and America. I would, once again this year, like to recognise their unwavering commitment, as well as that of all the institutions, companies and members of the public who make this possible. Thank you. 6 Annual balance 2O14 Carlo Galimberti In 2014, at Action Against Hunger - Spain alone, we have reached more than 5 million people threatened by hunger. I think this figure is conclusive enough to evaluate the year as a whole and it currently represents our greatest satisfaction. It has been a troubled year; with 2014 bringing together some of the most serious human crises of recent times and our organisation has been on the front line of response. The Philippines - an operational milestone The organisation s response to super typhoon Haiyan was historic, both in size and effectiveness. We managed to reach more than 1.3 million people. In the first hours and the following days, we were able to send 11 planes filled with humanitarian material, set up a team of more than 450 humanitarian experts and organise reconstruction programmes valued at more than 20m. This was all possible thanks to the commitment, flexibility and speed of a team of people who worked their fingers to the bone from the moment the emergency hit. At the end of 2014, a new typhoon hit the areas affected by Haiyan, but this time, the impact was less significant, in part due to the natural disaster risk management included throughout the postemergency and rehabilitation phase. The Middle East, a regional crisis The conflict triggered in Syria in 2011 now extends to the region as a whole. More than 12 million people need humanitarian aid and countries like Lebanon, where our organisation has been working since 2006, is harbouring more than 1 million refugees. Action Against Hunger is one of the few international organisations operating in Syria and our help to refugees extends to another five countries in the region. Meanwhile, the Israeli military operation Protective Edge increased the Palestinian population s level of vulnerability in the Gaza Strip. Our teams were active during the military operation, covering the basic needs of those affected. Ebola, the new threat in Africa Ebola has hit several West African countries hard. The virus may become established in the region in the coming years, which means our organisation is quickly adapting to this new context. For now, we have focused our efforts on prevention and awareness-raising to avoid new cases. We are also closely following the impact the epidemic may have on the population s food and nutritional security. We are working in Spain Action Against Hunger - Spain has consolidated its presence in terms of Social Action, launching programmes in Catalonia, Andalusia and Madrid and increasing the number of beneficiaries in our employability and inclusive entrepreneurship programmes. We have also strengthened our voice so that, through our presence on the ground and our experience, we can increase political will based on a current premise that is unquestionable - we are the first generation that can bring an end to hunger. We will not stop, because a world without hunger is within our reach. Olivier Longué Managing Director Action Against Hunger - Spain 6

7 ACTIONS AND EVENTS IN SPAIN 2nd EDITION OF GOALS AGAINST HUNGER The campaign - which had the aim of informing and mobilising the public to fight against child malnutrition, which kills more than three million children each year - included the broadcasting of the Spanish radio sports show Carrusel Deportivo on a Champions League match day from Mali and the broadcasting of the La Ventana radio programme from Bamako. A rapper, a storyteller and a film-maker fight malnutrition. After getting first-hand experience of our projects in Guatemala, Alberto Peláez, Noemi Laforgue and Mayte Castillo - the young people who won the art against hunger competition with their video, rap and narrative work - met at the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) as spokespersons for the first generation able to bring an end to hunger, to present the initiative and ask the Secretary General of International Development Aid for decisive steps to be taken in the fight against malnutrition. Qué necesitan LOS NIÑOS CHILDREN NEED YOU quenecesitan.org On World Food Day, we launched this campaign to highlight the absolute value of nutrition in the first 1,000 days of life. Emilio Aragón (Vice-Chair of Action Against Hunger - Spain), Dani Rovira, Patricia Conde, Leo Harlem, Dani Mateo, Joaquín Reyes and others helped us out. 34,000 students from 106 schools in Spain and Andorra participated again at the 17th edition of this initiative, joining to the more than 300,000 young people around the world that ran against hunger. The participating students effort was transformed into aid for populations suffering from hunger Annual Report Action Against Hunger - Spain 7
