2 ABOUT US We are a Development NGO, promoted by the Society of Jesus, which strives for social transformation through education. The challenges of poverty, inequality and environmental degradation are global. Therefore, there is a need for global citizens who are aware of these challenges and are committed and able to face up to them. For Entreculturas, this type of global citizenship emerges through the opportunity to access quality education. And this is our goal: to defend the right to quality education for every single person. Furthermore, we have 28 offices in Spain and an organisational structure which is nearly 18,000 strong giving us substance and validating what we do: to keep on working every day for justice and global development. 4 A MOVEMENT OF NETWORKS We re currently celebrating! In 2016, Entreculturas expanded a little more via the creation of its new branch in Catalunya, with offices in Spain now numbering 28. The greater manpower, ties and connections continue to keep our mission on track: to work for the right to education for everyone. Moreover, this has been verified at events such as our XVI Encuentro Anual, (16 th Annual Meeting), where we brought together over 250 people; or, for instance, our Carrera Solidaria (Solidarity Run) for children s education in the Chadian region of Guera, which saw the participation of over 12,000 runners in 10 cities in its fifth edition. And not to mention the growing number of volunteers through our long-term international programme VOLPA (which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2016), an example of this progress. In November, we also launched the Entreculturas Online School, a virtual space for training and exchanging knowledge which has become a new input channel for people committed to transformation, development and social justice. Creating national and international networks makes us stronger, contributes to improving our strategy and helps us to face challenges more effectively, as well as utilising resources which, when pooled, mean we can economise and take care of our planet.

5 EDUCATION, ADVOCACY AND MOBILISATION FOR GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP The Earth, Our Greatest School was a core idea which formed the backbone of our back-to-school campaign in Based on our experience of working alongside the most vulnerable people and indigenous populations in places like Mexico, Ethiopia and the Pan-Amazonia Region, we are fully aware that the relationship between education and sustainability is key to building a world of equality and respect towards nature, as proved by the Environmental Guardians of El Salvador on their visit. This year, as part of the Global Campaign for Education we also demanded greater and better financing for education during Global Action Week for Education, held in April across 124 countries. This capacity to speak out and participate in life as active citizens is what young people worked towards at the Red Solidaria de Jóvenes (Solidarity Network of Young People), in A World in Your Hands, the 5 th Global Meeting. Almost 300 young people, educators and volunteers from five countries came together to dream of a better world, to take the situation into their own hands and to act as agents of change. Finally, as part of our mobilisation against injustice, Hospitalidad.es launched the #YoSoyTierraDeAcogida manifesto. Likewise, as part of the Social Sector of the Society of Jesus, alongside Cáritas, CONFER and Justicia y Paz, we responded to the EU-Turkey Refugee Deal by submitting 33,218 signatures to Spain s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation in support of the We Have 72 Hours to Act initiative, which demanded migration and refugee policies based on protection and refuge.

6 AWARENESS-RAISING FOR SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION Monteserín Fotografía Sergi Cámara After touring more than twenty Spanish cities, the photography exhibition Somos Migrantes (We Are Migrants) went on display at Madrid s CaixaForum in Amid circumstances which rejected refugees entry into Europe, we organised a seminar on the challenges and opportunities in border migration. Another part of constructing citizen awareness people with the capacity to be concerned about problems in other parts of the world has been our trips in the field with the photographer Sergi Cámara and the journalist Chema Villanueva. With the former, we visited Ethiopia and Madagascar, two countries stricken with drought, where the Servicio Jesuita a Refugiados (Jesuit Refugee Service) and Fe y Alegría, respectively, work in extreme conditions to accompany and defend the local and refugee populations. The latter, from Europa Press, visited the JRS projects we support in Lebanon, where we promote the integration of Syrian refugee children into the local educational system. Just as collaboration work with the media enables us to grant visibility to overlooked causes, so too does the work on corporate social responsibility, with over 200 small and medium companies helping our reach to gain even more scope. Therefore, along these lines we continue to drive the Training for Employment Programme forward with Accenture; we have renewed the agreement Educating People, Generating Opportunities following 15 years of work with Inditex, providing support to one million people in 25 countries; and we concluded the Programme to Improve Education Quality in Latin America after a five-year period of activity with Fundación Telefónica. Moreover, in 2016 we took up the presidency of Fiare Zona Centro and the Observatorio de RSC.

7 DEVELOPMENT COOPERATION AND HUMANITARIAN AID In 2016 we supported a total of 168 international cooperation for development and humanitarian aid projects, across 41 countries in Africa, Latin America, Asia and Europe. The vast majority of these interventions were implemented alongside our strategic partners, Fe y Alegría and Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS), with whom we share the priority of defending the right to quality education, especially in vulnerable contexts. On 16 April 2016, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake in the north-west of Ecuador took the lives of over 650 people and left 30,000 more without homes. The Society of Jesus acted immediately to evaluate the extent of the damage and to outline a local coordinated response between all Jesuit institutions in the region. At Entreculturas, with our decades-long experience supporting the work of Jesuits in Ecuador, we sent funds to support the response plan. In October in Haiti, with everything seemingly back to normal after the devastation wrought by the earthquake in 2010, Hurricane Matthew swept across the south-west coast of the country and part of the Dominican Republic and Cuba. The catastrophe affected 2.1 million people, of which more than 800 lost their lives. In coordination with Fe y Alegría, whose network of schools was seriously affected, we helped in the first phase to hand out emergency kits, before the second phase was activated to quickly restore and recover livelihoods and education infrastructures. The I Congreso Internacional de Fe y Alegría África (First International Congress of Fe y Alegría in Africa), held in Chad, marked a historical moment for the International Federation of Fe y Alegría and for our work to support an education movement that is ever-present in vulnerable situations on the African continent. We must also mention the war in Syria and the huge commitment to its people by our colleagues at the Jesuit Refugee Service, which, during 2016, stood firm in their work to support and defend the civil population.
