Armenia Essential QuestionsHow have issues such as history, economy geography, education, agriculture, environment, and migration affected Armenia's position as one of the world's poorest countries? What is being done to solve its problems?
History of Armenia Luke White and Jimmy Smith Armenia is one of the world's oldest civilizations and the first Christian country in the world. Under the rule of Tigrane the Great (95 to 55 B.C.), Armenia became the strongest nation in Asia. When he died, they lost power. Throughout Armenia's history, Armenia has been invaded by several countries. Armenia has had to fight hard to protect its culture and tradition. The Ottoman Turks controlled Armenia from the 1500's through World War I. They were the most brutal invader. The Armenians suffered discrimination and horrific killings. In April, 1915, the Turks killed between 600,000 and 1.5 million Armenians. Armenia finally defeated the Turks on May 28,1918. On November 29, 1920, the Soviet Army invaded Armenia. In 1991, Armenia declared its independence from the Soviet Union.
History of Armenia Continued Luke White and Jimmy Smith Luke White and Jimmy Smith From 1992 to 1994, Armenia and Azerbaijan fought over a territory called Nagorno-Karabakh. Over 30,000 people died. Today, Armenia controls the territory. Because Armenia has had to constantly fight foreign invaders, the country has remained poor. Today, many Armenians are moving to other nations to find work. This is not helping the poverty in Armenia. ://present.me/view/18375-armenia
Environmental Issues Problems By:Grace and Zack Some environmental issues are the large amounts of trash lying around because there is no organized trash pick up and deforestation. Many trees were cut down for fuel during the energy crisis of the 1990s. Armenia is under strong pressure because the international community wants them to close all their nuclear power plants because they are polluting the water. Some of the environmental issues are deforestation, pesticides, erosion, mining, and pollution. If the environmental problems aren't stopped then living things will go extinct and it would cause serious and unchangeable damage. websites
Environmental Solutions By:Grace and Zack Some solutions to the environmental problems are planting trees and close all nuclear plants. Having trash be picked up is another solution. So the environment could be helped, Armenia put in a environmental education in the school curriculum. Sadly the government is putting taxes on soil help, earthquake insurance and forest rebuilding. The U.S. is providing technical help. websites
Economy Abby, Andrew, Emerson The Forbes magazine reported that Armenia had the second worst economy in the world as of 2011 The agriculture that Armenia supports is fruits and vegetables, wines, dairy and some livestock. The natural resources that Armenia produces are copper, zinc, gold, silver, lead, marble, and mineral spring water. Armenia's economy that is based on industry such as chemicals, electronic products, machinery, food processing, synthetic rubber, and textiles, are all dependent on resources from outside the country.
Poverty Problems in Armenia By: Mekaela Murphy Armenia has slow economic growth. Poverty in Armenia has increased from 27.6% (2008) to 36.8% (2010) Unemployment and Inflation are some of the most common problems in Armenia. 60% of people who are poor don't ask for assistance (money wise ).
Poverty Solutions in Armenia By: Mekaela Murphy Armenia has added mining and agriculture to the goods they sell. Agriculture is helping by providing jobs, incomes, and food Government is fixing roads from rural villages to modern highways Public and private partnerships are helping by cleaning the water. Heifer International is helping by taking donations from people and buying animals for people who can use them for food. They can rent the animals out to people to plow their fields, and they can use them to plow their own fields.
How are Other Countries Helping with Armenia's Problems? Hannah Windle Armenia has made changes that has made a good and stable trading market that has brought in money from other countries that are starting to invest in Armenia. The world financial crisis has impacted Armenia. Before the crisis, Armenia's economic growth was 14% /year, but now it is only 2%. On March 27, 2006 the U.S. made a deal with Armenia to give its government $235 million over five years. The money is to help get rural areas out of poverty and improve roads in and irrigation programs. The U.S. is also working with the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund to help Armenia as it becomes a free-market economy. The European Union's TACIS is helping Armenia with making laws by which their country will be run on and setting up a justice system The TACIS also helps with telecommunications networks, pipelines, border crossings, and transportation systems. The TACIS also focuses on improving, protecting and managing environmental resources.
