2 Abstract The main purpose of this paper is to assess the employment growth potential of economic growth in Pakistan. This is achieved by specifying an employment demand model and estimating the elasticity of employment with respect to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) using the model over Pakistani data for the period from to The main focus of the analysis is to assess if the economic growth in that country has been jobless over the past three decades. The issue is important for many developing countries where recent changes in the use of capital based foreign technology has resulted in substitution of labour with non-labour inputs such as capital. I develop an employment demand equation in which employment is expressed as a function of output (GDP). The equation is estimated using time series data and estimates the threshold level of economic growth for Pakistan economy. Results indicate that Pakistan economy required a high threshold level of GDP growth to generate the employment opportunities. I identify that in the phase of recovery periods, employment is less responsive to economic growth. A test of stationarity is performed and policy implications of results are also discussed.
