PAUSE FOR A MOMENT and look down at your feet. Whether you are reading this from a high-rise apartment in New York City, a Soviet-era social housing complex in Bulgaria, an informal settlement in Brazil or a one-story house in rural Zambia, land is right under your feet. No matter where you live or what you live in, you depend on land for shelter. Access to land lies at the heart of ending poverty; without land, there can be no housing, and adequate housing is the key to stability and opportunity. The global population is growing, but the planet isn t; land is a finite commodity. As an increasing number of people move into cities and urban areas, land for shelter is becoming scarcer, more sought after and more contested. Today, 1.6 billion people worldwide do not have access to adequate housing that s 1 in every 5 people. The good news is that we can change that with your help. Habitat for Humanity launched a global advocacy campaign so that everyone can stand on Solid Ground. The Solid Ground campaign is improving the way people access land globally to ensure that more people have an adequate home. How? By changing the policies, laws and systems at all levels of government that are standing in the way. We ve come a long way, but there s much more to do. This is where you come in. By using your voice to improve access to safe and secure land, you can help create the foundation for better housing. 3

4 SOLID GROUND IS CHANGING LAND POLICIES AND SYSTEMS. WHAT DOES IT MEAN? ASK THESE QUESTIONS OF YOURSELF AND YOUR PEERS: Imagine being evicted for no reason, without notice. What if you couldn't own property because of your gender? Or perhaps you could, but only in a cramped home with a leaky roof and no water? And how would you recover from a disaster if you couldn t return to the land where you once lived? SECURE TENURE Secure tenure, or freedom from fear of eviction, exists in many forms along a continuum ranging from formal, legal tenure to informal social tenure, and from group ownership to individual solutions. Solid Ground is improving all forms of land tenure at all levels of government. GENDER EQUALITY Ensuring secure property rights for women provides far-reaching benefits for entire communities. Solid Ground is promoting policies and systems that make equal property rights for women a reality. SLUM UPGRADING Urban population growth is outpacing the rate at which cities can respond to the need for housing. Solid Ground is working to upgrade slums and informal settlements by securing land rights for slum dwellers and advocating for policies that improve access to basic sanitation services. DISASTER RESILIENCE When a disaster strikes, the laws of the land determine the speed of its recovery. Solid Ground is strengthening land rights to form resilient and responsive communities. 4

5 CHANGES ARE UNDERWAY AS YOU READ THIS. Countries around the world are improving land policies and systems so that more people have an adequate home. Just as Habitat for Humanity Honduras is changing local policies across Honduras, Habitat for Humanity Kenya is addressing gender equality and land, Habitat for Humanity Cambodia is working with the national government to implement a national housing policy, and more than 20 other Habitat for Humanity national organizations are implementing Solid Ground in their countries. 7 BUILD THE MOVEMENT. INSPIRE AND LEAD. Host a petition drive. Get as many people as possible to donate their autograph in support of land access for shelter. Learn from Habitat for Humanity Kenya, which gathered 1,000 signatures by circulating paper petitions in local communities. During spring s Act! Speak! Build! Week, Habitat for Humanity campus chapter members in the U.S. challenged their classmates to take action online at solidgroundcampaign.org/takeaction. Organize a fundraiser. Fuel the global movement to create a world where safe, adequate, affordable housing is possible for every man, woman and child. Compete with your friends to see who can raise the most funds. You can submit donations easily online at solidgroundcampaign.org. Use your influence. Dedicate a club or community meeting to talk about land access for shelter. Update your group s website with information on the campaign. Use the questions posed at the beginning of this tool kit as conversation starters or invite Habitat in your community to share with your group. SHARE THE MOVEMENT. USE OUR INFORMATION AND TOOLS TO SPREAD THE WORD. Use your social media channels. Call attention to land access for shelter and tell others they can take action too at solidgroundcampaign.org/takeaction. Share the sample Facebook posts, Instagram images and tweets in this tool kit. Take our video challenge. The challenge is simple: post a 15-second video on Instagram using #15toSolidGround. The video should share why you care about land and housing and call others to do so too. Take a look at the hashtag for ideas to get you started. Use traditional media. Write a letter to the editor of your local paper or pitch stories to your local media contacts to build support for access to land for shelter. 7
