Preparation Before Leaving Immigration Documents Passport A passport is needed to travel to Cambodia. Apply immediately for a passport if you do not already have one. Passport information and application forms can be found on the U.S. State Department website ( If you already have your passport, make sure it will be valid for at least 6 months beyond the length of your stay abroad. Visa A visa is required to visit Cambodia. You may obtain your visa upon arrival at the two airports in Cambodia (Siem Reap and Phnom Penh). You will need the following items when applying for you visa upon arrival: A completed application form A passport with at least 6 months validity and plenty of blank pages One recent passport-sized photograph Visa fee (US$20) You may choose to complete your visa application prior to departure, but the application will also be distributed on the plane prior to arrival. You can find more information about the visa process, including the application, on the Cambodian Embassy s website: Handling Money Abroad The U.S. dollar is widely used, especially for larger transactions, and most prices are quoted in dollars. Ripped or torn U.S. bills are not accepted. The Cambodian riel can also be used, but it is less favored and is mostly given to tourists as change for dollar purchases. The riel is commonly used in smaller towns and rural areas. Credit cards are increasingly accepted within Cambodia Banks Several international banks operate ATM machines that allow travelers to obtain U.S. dollar currency in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and other urban centers. Please keep in mind that international transfer fees may apply when withdrawing money (check with your bank for details). A lockable safe will be available in your room. ATM machines are rare outside of Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Credit Cards Most hotels, pricier restaurants, and boutiques that cater to tourists accept accept major credit cards. Credit cards are not usually accepted in Khmer markets, small restaurants, or by tuk-tuk or taxi drivers. Only the most common cards (Mastercard and Visa) can be used. Packing Tips from Professor Anne Hansen for packing clothing: While in Siem Reap, you ll want to make sure your clothing is culturally appropriate. Although some tourists wear shorts to deal with the heat, the locals tend to cover as much skin as possible. Shorts are not typically considered proper attire for adults except inside their homes for sleeping or for swimming. 4
Inside monastery dress & service learning placement sites Women: Longer skirts or pants (cropped pants are fine) that go to below the knee, absolutely no sleeveless shirts or tank tops Absolutely no shorts No halters or backless dresses No short sun dresses Wear tank tops and/or appropriate lingerie under sheer blouses and skirts Shoes go on and off frequently so slip on sandals and shoes are best Necklines should not be too revealing cotton, basic shirts are the best thing to bring Men: Long pants and collared short sleeved shirts or polo shirts are vastly preferred by locals, but men can often get by with khaki long shorts and nice t-shirts, depending on the context No gym shorts or tank tops Angkor Wat Both men & women Good climbing shoes (such as sneakers or Keen sandals are best). Hats can be worn in outlying areas but not within temple compounds. Bring sunscreen or carry umbrellas for the sun. Women Longer skirts or pants (cropped pants are fine) that go to below the knee, absolutely no sleeveless shirts or tank tops Men Can wear anything except sleeveless shirts. Around the hotel Women can wear long shirts or capri yoga pants and men can wear gym shorts around the hotel. Women can wear sleeveless shirts in the hotel since it is pretty relaxed and staff are used to foreigners, but not to go out. There's a small pool and it's okay to wear bikinis there, but they do tend to make Cambodians uncomfortable; they prefer swimwear that covers more. Cambodian women usually swim in shorts and t-shirts, or traditionally, in full body sarongs. Mt Kulen National Park: Shorts and t-shirts for swimming; extra pair of dry clothes; you may want to pick up a sarong in the SR market (there are versions for both men and women) to change under since there are no changing rooms and Cambodians never change in public. There are photos of Khmer students swimming at Mt. Kulen in the slide show that will be loaded up on your course site, if you would like to know what to expect. Weather is either hot or very hot. By mid-june (at the latest) the rains will start. Pack a small, light-weight umbrella to carry around. When it rains, it rains very heavily. No polyester, only breathable fabrics like cotton and linen. 5
No need to bring jackets. You can expect to change 2-3 times/day. Locals usually shower at least three times: in the morning, at noon and in the evening. You will go through lots of clothes - but there will be laundry service at the hotel. Expect to spend at least $10-12/week on laundry (Prof. Hansen will provide you with a laundry price list so you can plan your budget accordingly). Cambodians are generally tidy dressers and like to see clothes ironed, especially in work environments. There are no irons in the rooms but ironing is included in laundry service. There are hairdryers in the rooms. Students should bring lots of insect repellent, since you will be wearing it daily. You can buy insect repellent and other toiletry items in Siem Reap but if you want to purchase familiar US brands, they tend to be expensive. For example, a bottle of Suave shampoo may cost as much as US $7-8. Thai and Khmer brands are considerably less expensive Shampoo and bath gel are provided in the room, but not lotion or conditioner. Women: Please note that tampons are not widely available. Stores that cater to foreigners may have them, but prices will be expensive. If you prefer tampons to pads, it s recommended that you bring them with you. All sorts of local brands of pads are available inexpensively. Electronics You will need a voltage converter, and plug adapter in order to use US appliances. Travel and Arrival Information You are responsible for making your own travel arrangements, which includes arranging flights that will allow for appropriate arrival time before the course start date. You may wish to arrange flights with other students on the program or fly to Cambodia on your own. Please make sure to arrive in Siem Reap no later than Monday, May 26 so that you will be ready to start the program the next morning. Siem Reap International Airport ( is Cambodia s busiest airport. You will be provided with specific arrival instructions at your pre-departure orientation. Helpful sites for booking international travel: STA Travel, Student Universe, 6
The Academic Program General Information Please review the program syllabus & itinerary for detailed information on the academic program. Registration IAP will register you for a special Study Abroad Course for the term you will be studying abroad; therefore, it is not necessary for you to register on the UW-Madison campus. This is a temporary registration, which will be converted into graded UW-Madison credit after the completion of your program. Course Equivalent Requests (CERs) Each course you take abroad must be assigned a UW-Madison equivalent and the grade you receive in the course also transfers back to be recorded on your UW-Madison transcript. In order to establish UW-Madison course equivalents for your study abroad courses, you will submit a Course Equivalent Request (CER) through your My Study Abroad account. Detailed information on the UW course equivalent process that you will use through your My Study Abroad account is available in the IAP Study Abroad Handbook and in your My Study Abroad account under the academics tab. Upon successful completion of the course, students will earn 4 UW-Madison credits of Religious Studies 400: Buddhism and Service Learning in Cambodia. Living Abroad Housing You will stay at a hotel (approximately a 5-minute walk) to Wat Damnak, in Siem Reap, where the Center for Khmer Studies (CKS) is located and where the program will use academic facilities. The rooms can accommodate two students, with one shared bath. The hotel practices ethical hiring at a living wage, and provides educational benefits for its workers. 8 Feb 2014 IAP revised syllabus 1 Buddhism and Service Learning in Cambodia Religious Studies 400 University of Wisconsin International Abroad Program Center for Khmer Studies Siem Reap, Cambodia May-June 2014 Course Description This course offers students the opportunity to closely examine the intersections of religion, ethics, social problems, and social work in a majority Theravada Buddhist community in Siem Reap province in northwest Cambodia. Caught in the Vietnam War during the 1960s and early 70s, Cambodians suffered through a genocidal cultural revolution during the Khmer Rouge period ( ), followed by two decades of civil war and social turmoil during the 1980s and 90s. Today, Cambodians face a number of difficult social challenges in addition to the long-term physical and psychological effects of recovering from the mass hardship and violence endured by survivors of the Khmer Rouge regime thirty years ago. Cambodia in the early twenty-first century is a country with a rapidly developing economy struggling with both the positive and negative impacts of globalization, a still inadequate infrastructure (including lack of electricity, paved roads and access to wells in some rural areas), poor health care, inequities in the educational system, and the environmental consequences of global warming and other human-made problems such as de-forestation and agro-business. It is also a country rich in Buddhist and other religious resources, including NGOs and small non-profit groups that seek to help Cambodians respond to the challenges of daily life in a rapidly changing society. Drawing on previous prerequisite coursework on campus in Buddhist ethics, Asian religions, or global public health, students selected for the course will travel to Cambodia for four weeks to learn about Cambodian social problems and solutions through first-hand experience including service learning, field trips, films, discussions with local experts, and relevant lectures on Cambodian religion, culture, history, and contemporary society. In trying to understand how Cambodians especially Cambodian Buddhists have understood and responded to problems of global poverty, inequity, human trafficking, and the legacies of violence and warfare, our class will focus on what Khmer refer to as social work (sangamkicch or karsangam) projects. Many of the social work projects and agencies we will visit and learn from in Siem Reap are connected to Buddhist institutions and individuals and are reflective of Buddhist ethical values about
Buddhism and Service Learning in Cambodia 2 loving-kindness, care, suffering, and compassion. Several of these agencies are founded by diasporic Khmer who lived in the US, France or Canada and returned to help the communities they had left as refugees; others are grassroots organizations developed by local Khmer; some are humanitarian and/or educational organizations focused on Cambodia but funded or founded by nationals from outside of Cambodia. Students will be introduced to projects that address issues connected to vulnerable children, education, vocational training, women s empowerment, environmentalism, disabilities (especially for victims of land mines), and rural land issues. In addition to studying and visiting a variety of organizations and agencies, students will spend approximately hours during this four-week period in social work placements. One of the most profound needs articulated by many of these organizations is the opportunity for clients and students to learn English from native speakers. Skills in English are one of the important keys to educational advancement and employment in Cambodia today, and this is a meaningful job that non-khmer-speaking American students can provide in Cambodia. Possible placement sites include: a village community center with an organic community garden and nursery school for families living below the poverty level; a small town technical school where village students are trained in English, computer, sewing, and small business skills; a Buddhist-run school for impoverished children that also addresses problems of poverty and hunger; a newly opened children s library; a vocational training school for women at risk fun by Buddhist monks; an ESL program for under-served village children: a culinary training school and organic farming development project. Students will be involved in teaching English and other skills at these sites and/or providing other kinds of assistance. In addition to lectures, discussions and field trips designed to help students understand the larger history and context of Buddhism, social issues and social work in Cambodia, students will participate in guided reflections on their placement experiences and receive help with planning lessons and other daily preparations for their placements. Students will also take part in experiential learning about meditation taught by a monk teacher. For Buddhists, meditation constitutes an important resources for responding to illness, stress and trauma; we will reflect on how meditation fits into the schema of Buddhist practices of care. Finally, during the four weeks of study, students will watch or read and discuss a series of assigned films, short articles, and books to help them interpret their experience in Cambodia. Students must apply and be interviewed for participation in the class. Selected students will receive four credits. Prerequisites include: FIG/ReligSt 200 Love and Attachment in Buddhist Art & Literature; ReligSt 453 Buddhist Ethics ; ReligSt 364 Introduction to Buddhism ; ReligSt 438 Buddhism in Southeast Asia ; approved prior coursework in Global Health; OR special permission from the instructor. Students enrolled in FIG/ReligSt 200 Love and Attachment will have first priority for this service learning course. All students will be required to attend an orientation session prior to departure. Students will be selected on the basis of prerequisites or other relevant background, commitment, interest, and maturity. Students must agree not to use illicit substances in Cambodia (which are highly illegal) and to follow all cultural and safety rules and guidelines established by the instructor.
Feb 2014 IAP revised syllabus 1 The course is scheduled in such a way as to allow interested students to extend their studies in Cambodia over the summer for a six to nine credit program including courses on Cambodian history, culture and nation-building and optional Khmer language study in Phnom Penh through Consortium for International Educational Exchange, UW s study abroad partner in Cambodia. CIEE Cambodia Summer program courses are pre-approved for credit at UW and includes optional volunteering placement in selected Phnom Penh social service and teaching agencies. Interested students who wanted to stay on their own after the course ends might be able to extend their volunteer jobs in some cases, but would need to pay for all their own expenses. We will make every effort to accommodate the needs of students with disabilities in this class. Please notify me as soon as possible at the beginning of the semester about any special accommodations needed. Students who plan to apply for the course should be aware of the physical demands of working and studying in a tropical climate and developing country. It is not recommended that students with on-going healthcare concerns that would be adversely affected by these conditions travel to Cambodia. Learning outcomes What students enrolled in the course can expect to gain: introduction to Cambodian history and culture; understanding of Cambodian Buddhism and its ethical and practical responses to problems of human existence ; insight into problems of poverty and inequity in a global context including the special challenges faced by women and children in developing economies; exposure to Buddhist definitions and applications of social work ; first-hand experience living and working in a developing country; job experience in a NGO or non-profit; (for most placements this will involve developing useful skills in teaching ESL, for others it might involve teaching art or computer skills); learning how to make a difference. Assignments and grading All students will spend approximately hours in service placements. Students will keep individual journal reflections on their service placement experiences either in a paper journal or in an electronic format. These journals will serve as the basis for group discussions and will be turned in at the completion of the course (and later returned if they are on paper). Please note that if you keep your journal electronically you are responsible for keeping back-up copies. Students will be required to participate in all group discussions, films, lectures and field trips (unless designated as optional) and all students are required to meet individually with the instructor to discuss and asses their placement experiences (individual meeting times will be made available). Lesson plans and other assigned planning tasks for service placements will be checked at the end of the time period indicated on the syllabus, i.e., on afternoons reserved for individual and group reflection and planning. Students will also be expected to complete the
Buddhism and Service Learning in Cambodia 4 assigned readings. You may choose to do the reading either in Cambodia or, if you prefer, prior to departure. All students will be expected to take part in class discussions on these materials on the dates indicated on the syllabus. Student grades will be determined as follows: Attendance and participation in discussions and other activities (daily) - 50% Lesson plans/preparation planning for service placements (checked on days indicated) - 25% Journal reflections (turned in at end) - 25% Assessment All students will be asked to complete a weekly self-evaluation and survey about their placement experience. In addition, all students will be expected to meet individually with the instructor. The self-evaluation will not be graded but will help the instructor identify problems or concerns and make necessary adjustments; the survey will aid the instructor in evaluating the quality of the placement sites for student service learning purposes. Students will also be asked to provide (anonymous) final evaluations of the entire course experience. Assessment of the service learning component of the program will be structured by a consultant at ConCERT who works professionally with NGO volunteer programs. A final evaluation report with recommendations for adjustments to both the service learning and coursework components of the curriculum will be submitted to IAP following the conclusion of the course. Assigned books and readings You will need to purchase and bring the following books (you may be able to buy the Chanrithy Him book inexpensively in Siem Reap but that won t be certain. The other two books could prove expensive even if you can find them. Him s and Maha Ghosananda s books may be available in electronic formats if you prefer but please download in advance since Cambodian internet servers and local wireless networks are unreliable): Chanrithy Him, When Broken Glass Floats: Growing up under the Khmer Rouge Maha Ghosananda, Step By Step: Meditations on Wisdom and Compassion Somaly Mam, The Road of Lost Innocence Short selections from: Shinichi Takenchi (ed)., Confronting Land and Property Problems for Peace and Anne Best, The Monk, The Farmer, The Merchant, The Mother: Survival Stories of Rural Cambodia. June 20 (Fri) Sīla Day Phnom Kulen trip with students from Pouk Technical School This will be a huge outing for the technical school students and a chance for all of you to spend the day with rural Khmer students your age. Wear your group t-shirts All day trip with Khmer picnic food Beautiful waterfalls. Prepare to swim Khmer-style. (Please note: don t bring
Buddhism and Service Learning in Cambodia 14 your swimsuits to this event - Cambodians generally wear shorts or jeans and t-shirts for swimming). Bring towels or sarongs for drying off and dry clothes to change into later. June 21 (S) FREE DAY for errands, shopping and packing/departure in the evening (Korean Air flights usually leave at 11 pm. You will need to arrive at the airport at least 2 hours prior to your flight time; check-in lines are usually very long). 4:00 9:30 PM: Made in Cambodia Market in front of Shinta Mani Hotel Meals on your own. Please be sure to turn in your journals or post them to the course dropsite if you brought a laptop and kept your journal electronically. You will also be asked to fill out a final course evaluation of your overall experience in this course and any recommendations for changes for next time June 22 (Sun) Travel/arrival in US; most of the cheaper flights on Korean Air involve a 5-6 hour layover in Incheon Airport in Seoul on the return flight. It s a nice airport with free wireless, free showers and good Korean food. It s easiest to use a credit or debit card in the airport for food in order to avoid changing currency. Staying on in Cambodia The course aims to provide you with enough cultural knowledge and basic survival skills (such as polite phrases) to travel independently in Cambodia at the conclusion of our four-week class. It is always preferable to travel with at least one other person. If you plan to stay in Cambodia or Southeast Asia after the course ends for travel or other reasons, you will need to extend your visa beyond the 30 days allotted for the course; we can help you with this process during the last week of the course (it will cost approximately $45 for another 30 day extension, and only one such extension is permitted). You will be responsible for your own hotel arrangements beginning on the night of June 21, and be aware that the special rates negotiated for the course may no longer apply at our hotel and/or your rooms may not be available unless you book them in advance. You should write to the Golden Banana (its name is changing to Rambutan Hotel Siem Reap) in advance if you would like to extend your stay there beyond the
Feb 2014 IAP revised syllabus 1 regular departure time on the morning of June 21 The best guide for planning your trip in Cambodia or surrounding countries are the most recent Lonely Planet Guide books for each country or city, which will give you up-todate information on visas, hotels, flights, busses, and other necessary information. I strongly recommend that you do not stay in most youth hostels or backpacker guesthouses in Cambodia or Thailand; look for small family-oriented boutique hotels or larger family-run businesses where locals stay. We can help with suggestions for hotels and guesthouses in various cities but you are responsible for making your own arrangements. Students interested in staying on in Cambodia for more academic credit and coursework in history, politics and nation-building (with optional Khmer language) can explore the Consortium for International Educational Exchange (CIEE) summer in Phnom Penh or, for upper-level undergraduates who have prior coursework in Southeast Asian Studies and would like to learn academic research skills, take a look at the Center for Khmer Studies Junior Fellows program: summer-junior-resident-fellowship-program/. This is a selective program, most appropriate for students who plan to do a senior thesis on a Cambodian topic and continue their Cambodia studies in graduate school. Some of you who get the Cambodia bug may choose to apply for this program later, so that you can return to do research for your senior thesis. Finally, if you want to study Khmer language when you return, talk to the CSEAS at UW Madison about opportunities for distance learning during the academic year and intensive summer Khmer (2015) at the Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute (SEASSI): Competitive scholarships for undergraduate Khmer language study are available through FLAS and SEASSI.
