Number MS The papers of Nat Weinberg were placed in the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs in May of Additional papers were placed in the Archives in early The collection was opened for research in December of Nat Weinberg was born in New York City on February 15, He began work at 13 after the death of his father. He attended Brookwood Labor College in 1935 r and he received a B.A. from New York University in He worked as a teacher on WPA workers education projects, and worked for several federal bureaus. He was also a researcher for the ILGWU. In 1947 Walter Reuther who had met him through Brookwood invited him to join the UAW as Research Director. From 1947 until his retirement in 1973 Weinberg held the title of Director, Special Projects and Economic Analysis. Weinberg originated the idea of the Guaranteed Annual Wage and of Supplemental Unemployment Benefits. Both of these concepts were formulated with the objective of motivating the automakers to schedule steady work for their workers rather than laying them off for long periods. In 1968 he was awarded a Ford Foundation Grant to study world economic conditions for one year. He also served as a consultant for many federal and state groups. Among them were: The Arms Control and Disarmament Agency, the Committee on Automation and Manpower, and the National Commission on Productivity. He has been an active member of the NAACP and the ADA. He is the author of Adjusting to Technological Change and numerous articles. Mr. Weinberg's papers reflect some aspects of his work for the UAW, particularly on the subject of the Guaranteed Annual Wage. There is also some material relating to his work for federal agencies prior to joining the UAW. He retired from his position as Director of the UAW s Special Projects and Economic Analysis unit in 1974, but remained active in economic and labor matters. From 1973 to 1974, he worked for the United Nations as a consultant to its Group of Eminent Persons to Study the Impact of Multinational Corporations on Development and International Relations. He also served as a consultant to Rep. Phillip Burton of California in the late 1970s on legislation for protecting loggers displaced by the expansion of Redwood National Park. Weinberg died in The Weinberg papers contain correspondence, clippings, articles, reports, speeches, and research material relating mostly to his service as Director of the UAW s Special Projects unit and his work on the UN s study of multinational corporations in PLEASE NOTE: Folders are computer-arranged alphabetically within each series in this finding aid, but may actually be dispersed throughout several boxes in the collection.
